Streaming would be cool and all, but I would be perfectly happy with being able to re-download movies like I can re-download apps, music and TV shows. That provides a *great* peace of mind in event of data loss.
lol

i dont think people who actually paid for their devices would agree but unless you did and think its cool nothing works its fine with me lol

the MAIN problem with buying movies online, is you have to store them, and have them waste space on your hdd/ssd. this, if it is true could be epic. i wouldn't need a blu-ray drive (I still want one tho)
The only way I'd bite is if they promised to upgrade my digital purchase to the better quality version each and every time it gets upgraded in the store. The current 720p videos with very compressed audio is not something I'm interested in buying, unless Apple will promise me I'll get the 1080p lossless audio version someday down the road when that becomes available from iTunes.

The distribution deals with premium channels is something the studios understandably are trying not to cannibalize, because it represents a considerable amount of money paid in flat, in advance, that can recoup the costs of production with greater certainty than the box office alone.

So, being bound by those agreements, they've got to work something out with Apple that will be beneficial to them and not eat into their other revenue stream.

I know that doesn't sound very exciting but that's the mechanics of business and it wouldn't make sense to completely jump ship on a multibillion dollar distribution channel that in many cases makes more money for a given picture than the box office receipts themselves.

You'd wait for the download to complete over the course of, say, an entire day? Remember, 1080p with LOSSLESS audio is around 25-30 gigabytes of data (not including the extras).

I just like that a Pixar movie was used for the screenshot. :apple:

Edit: Tangled is actually Disney, not Pixar. Close enough. :)

Uh, you can re-download movies you have purchased in the event of data loss.
I did it when my appleTV (1st gen) needed a new HD.

Music, Apps, Your files and now Movies are a really great way for Apple to buy your brand loyalty. With every one of those items you tie to your iTunes account it becomes really, really hard for you to walk away to another device and manufacturer. Brilliant really.:)

"Those agreements would prevent the sale or distribution of movies while they were being aired on HBO. It's not clear how that conflict will be resolved."

Money. Apple could just pay off HBO.

I would not be surprised if HBO (and, perhaps, the studios) are asking for a significant payment from Apple to provide this functionality.

It's ridiculous. If I buy a DVD movie, I can watch it as many times as I want on multiple DVD players and not pay a penny more. The actors get a cut of the initial sale, NOT the for every time I watch it.

It should be no different if I download a movie to my computer, phone, Apple TV, etc.

Apple should just do it and tell the studios we'll see you in court. THink about when the VCR came out, and then Tivo. The studio took these companies to court and guess who won? The consumer.

It's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

remote movie streaming would be so awesome, it would both increase the amount of videos you can carry with you while at the same time saving space on your local hard drive.

Hey would that work on mac itunes as well? that would be so awesome, i delete movies to save hard drive space, i keep thinking I am going to upgrade to an SSD soon.

The Lossless audio is only 2-3 GB's.

he didn't say lossless video... so the total size would be ~12GB

them simply taking Apple to court is unacceptable. think of the legal fees Apple'd have to pay... O.O
