I'm amazed they sell so many downloads when there has never been an easy way to browse anything other than the top charts (ok genius helps a bit, but not very well).

Siri integrated into iTunes for iPhone 4S, iPad 3 and upcoming Apple TV.

Hopefully this isn't just a revamp but also new stuff too. I want a full streaming service from Apple to compete with Spotify/Netflix.

This would be good. It's hard to see all the new stuff that comes out

An overhaul of the online stores would be good, even better would be a major reworking of the Mac and Windows iTunes app. Time to have separate apps for buying/renting and playing back the different content types that all share the same metadata store and folder hierarchy.

iApps (includes ATV apps), iVideos, iMusic, iPodcasts and iBooks (includes audio books). Each exposes only their particular content, online store and metadata. They'd share a lot of UI and other code of course but they'd be separate logically named apps.

The remaining odd man out would be the Mac App Store app, should it be merged with iApps or would that just cause confusion between OS X apps and iOS apps? Probably not if it was designed properly.

On an unrelated note: It seems odd that Apple changed the name of Mac OS X to OS X, after all it seems very unlikely OS X is going to run on anything but Macs (iOS on the other hand is going lots of places besides phones and tablets, ATV being only the beginning). Why not simply call it mOS? Unless they're thinking of renaming the Macintosh...

I have already moved all my music listening to Spotify. iTunes is now really a thing of the past, I only really open it for occasional iPhone syncs and backup. Other than that, iTunes is not of use to me much more.

I just use iTunes to manage my podcasts at this point. Also, I still value my metadata.

They should rename it iMedia or something, since music is only a fraction of the program.

They have renamed iCal and Address Book for Mountain Lion, so possible. Though, I doubt they ever would, unless it was a completely revamped application. iTunes is a strong brand, though we don't have any iTunes + iPod ads anymore.

I hope it is a completely new application to replace iTunes.

Seems, to be some misunderstanding here, this is about the iTunes STORE. Not the application we use on the computer. Read it again, it states they want to improve searching for content. All of that is in the iTunes Store on Apple's side, nothing to do with the software side we see.

iTunes itself is a bloated joke. When it was just music, it was fast, efficient and worked. Not it's like starting a damn steam engine. Take 5 minutes before it comes to life.

Happy news. Long overdue.

Good point. I think the thread has strayed a bit, but I still do think that separating the iTunes store from the player would be a good start in simplifying the store experience for the user.

If Apple applies themselves, using their best people, this is an opportunity to truly improve an area of the Apple experience, that needs to be revamped.

Done right, not only will it benefit users but Apple themselves. iTunes is a place where many would be likely to spend more time, buy more product, and tell their friends about the improved experience.

As the hub of all Apple content. I'm looking forward to an improved experience.

iTunes is a bloated cpu and ram hogging mess. I quit using it three years ago. Many of us have no use for ipod, iphone, ipad integration and only need a basic application to playback music; no need for a music store, movies, books, tones, tv shows. etc.

I now use Enqueue

Both of which use only a fraction of RAM that iTunes does.

Moss?

I dunno...

There's no reason to separate them. Just clean up the interface a bit, and speed up the store experience.

iTunes has seen a lot of speed improvements this last year, so it's already quite a bit more responsive, but one can still do better. 10.2 brought the long awaited image caching, so it no longer takes time to load the artwork, that did speed things up immensely.

Great interface! thanks for the ideas. I prefer the "Mother's Milk" album.

You can in fact do this. Just swipe your finger to the right over the video's entry in the list and the delete button appears. Took me awhile to find it too.

Swipe to delete also works for Artist, Album, or Song. I just tried it. Damn, thats handy. I hated having to connect to iTunes just to delete music from my iPhone.
Learn something new everyday!

Great news.

The iTunes user-experience has become a mess - not anywhere as messy as, say, amazon.com - but (for a simplicity-spoiled Mac user) a mess nonetheless.

I hope this means improvements to the iTunes application and not just the store. The iTunes application desperately needs to be simplified.

It would make sense with the rest of the developments in Mountain Lion. Previous applications that did multiple things, like Mail and iCal, are now being split up into their components (iCal > Calendar, Reminders; Mail > Mail, Notes, (and no more RSS reader in Mail)). I hope iTunes follows suit. It might be nice to have just a music player, just a video player, or just an application that syncs iOS devices.
