Just dropped my 5s and shattered my screen.
If it wasn't for the BestSkinsEver I had applied, there would probably be glass all over the place.

The screen is just shot. It has to be repaired/replaced.
I wish I could hold out for the 6 but it just won't work.

So what the best plan of attack for this then?
I use my Applecare to replace the screen?
Will Apple just give me a new/refurb 5s altogether or just fix my screen?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Do you have AppleCare plus? If so, dunk the phone in water before you head into the store so you can ensure yourself a replacement. Might as well get a new phone out of the deal if you're paying the same deductible ($80) anyway. If not, apple will just replace the screen which I believe is $150 if you don't have AppleCare plus.

Nope, I don't have AC+, just regular AC.

Poop...

I wonder if I should call around and see if my local mall has repair kiosks to do this. I only wanted to use AC if it was free repair or a new/refurb phone.

Beware of the mall kiosks as they will use substandard parts. These place are mostly scammers!

Are you sure you don't have Applecare+? Apple stopped selling regular Applecare shortly after the iPhone 4s launched.

I didn't know that you could apply vanilla AppleCare to anything newer than the iPhone 4s.

He has a 5s which is still under the original apple care, don't think he purchased anything.

They do still sell AppleCare. When I brought my broken 4S to be replaced they were swearing that I had purchased AppleCare and not AppleCare+. I did not get the replacement until I found a copy of the email receipt saying I purchased AppleCare+.

I've seen AC+ and I don't have that one.

Just got back from my local mall getting my screen replaced.
The whole LCD/glass panel had to be replaced... that's how bad
the break was.

$150 later.... I'll be more careful from now on!!

My 5S is almost a year old. Screen is cracked, but fully usable. No applecare was purchased.

What are they going to charge me?

If it is damage you are going to pay something. After all, it is your fault not a defect.

Apple stores stopped selling it but you could buy it from Apple Care at any time up until about 2 months ago. Now even they don't sell it.

Same here, I dropped my phone in a parking lot. I did not have AppleCare but had ATT insurance. Apple wanted over 250 to replace I think. Att would do it for 99 but had to send my phone away... So and the little stand at the mall wanted 120. I showed them the ATT offer and asked if they would do it for 100 bucks. They said yes and 15 minutes later my iPhone 5 was back in my hand with a new screen. This was last week and they did a perfect job. The phone works as it should.

$149 to get an official replacement screen installed at the Apple store.

I paid $281 ($269 + tax) earlier this month for a screen replacement for a 5s. The store I went to was not yet doing fixes and instead replaced the entire device.

But everyone ELSE does it... lol

My buddy (that represents the manager of a local Apple store) says you wouldn not believe the crazy things people do to get a replacement. Ultimately they have to play along, but I wouldn't second guess someone saying their phone just took a trip in the toilet anyway, even if I didn't believe them.

Personally I wouldnt bother repairing it. Sell it as is. Screens being broken don't wreck the resale as long as the phone is still operable/not blacklisted, and you won't have to deal with a crappy (or expensive) repair first that you likely won't recoup the costs of anyway.

Of course AC+ would be the best alternative, but since that's not an option I'd say do nothing and sell it as-is.

Oh man, that's like $130 extra.
If the device was fine besides the screen you could have found an Apple store that does inhouse screen repairs to save yourself some money.

Luckily I had Squaretrade so they reimbursed me the cost of the repair a couple days later. I was still hoping they could simply fix the screen so I could save my data. I think prior to iOS 7 I was able to make a backup in iTunes on a device that previously synced with the phone when it was locked, but that didn't seem to be allowed anymore. Touch ID wasn't available since I had already turned the phone off at some point.
