hmmm do you really think so?
Apple was TRYING to come across as self-righteous, pretentious asses?
HMMM... must be some new marketing strategy that I don't understand.

personally i think that its a double entendre. they are mac geniuses literally in that they for the most part know what they are doing. but its also kind of making fun of them selves at the same time. you know the sarcastic line when someone points out something obvious "way to go genius"

Why they changed the logic board on yours i cannot understand?
Sounds like they thought the video card (on the logic board) was causing the splotch issue.

Switching gears for the OP, the people in the orange shirts are Concierges. Quoting Apple, "The Concierge in the orange shirt is your guide to the Apple Retail Store, ready to answer your questions and point you in the right direction."

Basically, it was his job to direct you to the person that could help the OP.

Unfortunately, as good as Apple generally is, they have no magical ability to ensure that 100% of their employees never have a bad day and get an attitude towards the customer. And if the customers don't give feedback to the store management when this happens, there's even less chance that this type of situation is ever dealt with.

If you go back to that store and explain the situation to the manager on duty, I'd be surprised if s/he doesn't handle it to your satisfaction.

I know all that. But at that moment, I think if I spoke to anyone, I might have been a bit rude. It just set me off.

I bet it set you off. You've been in the store four different times for the same repair and some guy is a jerk to you. I think it would have set most people off.

So even if you don't go back to that store to have your laptop properly repaired (must be nice to have 7 nearby stores!), at least think about giving the original store a quick phone call to talk with the manager about the orange shirt jerk.

If its anything like my local Apple store, the managers will want to hear. If this guy's had a pattern of being a jerk to people, it's one step closer to ultimately solving the problem.

So a quick question.
If I go in to the store today, does anyone have any advice on how to approach the issue of the display whine and subtle flicker, because someone might assume that it isn't a huge issue, but it is to me.

I don't necessarily care about telling the manager about the rude employee, I just don't want to get the run around after two repairs already.

I think the best way to go about it would be to say something like "hey i think the screen you used to replace my old one has a flicker problem. i really need this fixed because it is very troublesome when working in lowlight situations" or something like that.

I think that if you spoke to a manager about this being the FIFTH trip in to get your screen fixed properly, you'd have better luck than if you walked up to the Genius Bar without an appointment and tried to get any help.

This is a great suggestion. I think that this approach, coupled with an easy-going attitude, will likely result in your problem being resolved. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I always make any major Apple purchases (like an MPB) from their web-store. I find their customer care way easier to deal with and much more accommodating. I have had the flickering issue on two different 15" UMBPs both of which were past the return window and the online guys swapped them both for new units without any questions. They also sent out the new units before I sent the old one back - so much less hassle and you don't have to go without a machine.

i think its a matter of preference. for me i like going into an actual store. but i do sometimes wish i was more of an online person. driving there is sometimes irritating but once i get there im glad i drove.

I'm currently fuming at Apple over my MacBookPro2,2 ( early 2007 purchase )

I currently have an open repair for a flickering screen ( left half of the screen flickers while it's warming up even at full brightness... up to 15 minutes later ). Including this repair the system will now have had 5 displays ( 2x dust, 1x uneven backlight ). This current display will have been on my system a whole week before I brought it back in.

This is on TOP of the other repairs including 2x keyboard, motherboard, fan assembly, speaker assemble, and the wrist rest area because it wouldn't stay down from all the repairs the unit has had.

I asked about a replacement due to the sheer number of repairs. ( Over the past 12 months I've been to the store over a dozen times between diagnosis, drop off, pick up, and other genius requests ). Probably at least 30 times since I got the system a little over 2 years ago.

The manager went off for 45 minutes and finally got back to me. They won't replace it because "it's an environmental defect" or "cosmetic" the issues that I have had. I point blank asked how he thought dust could get between the lcd and the glass when it should be sealed at the factory and he had no answer.

So they are replacing the screen... AGAIN. I have been insulted at the insinuation that a laptop that barely leaves my couch ( after the first major round of repairs over 1 year ago ) constitutes a harsh or dusty environment. I'm also flabbergasted that they would make up such a lie about dust under the screen being environmentally based.

Honestly it's embarrassing how bad the incident was.

Dude..... Orange shirt means, "They are NOT a genius"

Go talk to someone behind the genius bar again. ;)

if i were you i would maybe try a different apple store or just contact apple directly to see if they can help you out better. its obvious that your apple store sucks, no offense, and are trying to find the cheapest way out or trying to hit some kind of numbers (i was a CEM manager for Best Buy) and they do that stuff. its despicable. mostly the reason i left.

the last 'genius' i talked to told me there was no such thing as an iPhone 2G - he said "IT'S CALLED AN iPHONE OK?" and i said whoa chill out i'll just go get my incase somewhere else then ha. man

The last Genius I spoke to told me I would not be able to get service on my MBP because I put in 3rd party RAM. basically I would not be able to get my logic board or case issue replaced (which is still happening, apple is sending me a free nano to compensate for my lost time) because of the 3rd party RAM.

Heres the kicker... how does 3rd party RAM affect warping and bending of the case..?

Either way, OP since you live in the LA area, and have any more issues with your MBP, dont take it to Manhattan Village. Most of the time I go there with issues for my computer or my late iPhone, I would always be treated like dirt and basically given the run around that... *Genius is always right and im wrong*. I hate that store with a passion...

i don't even know why they are called "geniuses"....but seriously, try a different support tech, the guy that was impolite was probably having a bad day because he was constipated or something of the sort. maybe he was just a tool? most folks on the job at the store are pretty helpful though.
