applecare at at&t store

i purchased applecare with my iphone at an at&t store
do i need to do anything further as far as registering it, or is it done automatically?

You have to register for it online.

Did you receive a box or something which has a code on it? AFAIK, auto-enroll only works when you buy from Apple online store. If you did receive something, open it up and go to https://selfsolve.apple.com/Agreements.do and register it
