May be you should check what parts are covered by your insurance? Applecare provides technical support. You can get help for Software related issues and services of your iphone from Apple and insurance covers physical damage also. So it it better to get informed about all aspects of insurance.
 
Would I be able to hold onto this until I got an iphone 5, or do apple care numbers have to be used by a certain date?
