Looking to buy a 12.9 Pro on eBay (UK), 1st Gen. Someone has one which has AppleCare included and runs until June 2018 so interested.

I've checked the serial and confirmed with pics and screenshots match and been on Apple warranty which confirms June 2018.

Contacting the seller he says he bought as new on eBay and the AppleCare and so doesn't have the receipt/email receipt as such.

According to https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202712 it says about receipt.

So is all that needed is the serial? Could he contact Apple and "transfer" inform he's selling and get me registered, will they have him registered anyway or just the serial?

Is £500 for a 1st gen 32Gb with AppleCare until June 2018 decent prices? Apple refurb of the same is £569.

Thanks

Personally I’d go with Apple. The extra 69 gives you Apple warranty till aug 2018 with the option to extend it till 2019

Maybe but AppleCare is better I believe anyway than standard warranty?

It also comes with a couple of cases so I was thinking maybe a better deal.

If the AppleCare is ok, see what battery life is like and then take in near end of AppleCare and maybe try get a new battery?

Apple care is just an extension of the warranty. Neither is better unless your referring to Apple care+

Ah.... Not sure! Didn't know there was a difference sorry. How can I check, I'll do a warranty check and let you know?

apple care goes with the device not the owner. its listed in the system under the serial. can't be transferred to another serial outside of a service replacement.

so you are fine on that regard

So don't need any other info? There is definitely a way to transfer though. If you've got the Apple support app you can go through the procedure, or see the link above there is info on the transfer procedure

To transfer Apple requires the receipt for both the device and AC to verify 1) the original end date of the warranty and 2)

There is "official" Apple policy that requires the original owner to notify Apple of the transfer. As with any company how they handle it is a lottery and depends on who you talk to. When the product is bought from Apple Apple knows when the device was purchased and thus the true start date of the warranty. When the product is bought from a 3rd party they need the receipt to verify this information.

Then there is the "unofficial" way I think most Geniuses handle repairs and that is if Apple's system says the device is on warranty to stop there and not ask any other questions. So if you go to Apple's warranty lookup page and it says everything is in order, no asterisks or other qualifiers you should be good. But when buying used there is always a risk that Apple will ask for the purchase and AppleCare receipt before starting a repair. Even if you have receipts they can be easily faked, esp. if the seller claims it was purchased online and only has an email receipt.

The only way to be totally covered is for the seller to complete the transfer as outlined in Apple's policy. The problem is he/she likely isn't going to do that before purchasing and after the sale it's a lot of work to get $ back from a bad seller on eBay.

Thanks for the reply.

Everything looks ok on the above screenshot from the warranty lookup from the serial so everything seems to be in order.

I've emailed to ask and he's on to Apple support about how to transfer.

In my experience, mostly without AppleCare I might add, it's always just off the serial number as you say.

You're being lied to, move on.

? How's this? Lied to how? It doesn't really matter anyway where he bought from he could have said he bought new from Apple store for all I would know?

The reason looks decent from the pictures, and the fact it has AppleCare still so if something goes wrong then have this. This is the reason asking about the AppleCare side of it.

Stay away from eBay. Earn some more money, buy it from Apple you'll save some grief in the long run

I have to say this is what I tell myself ha ha! Son just bought a 2017 iPad, and bought in a Apple certified reseller brand new and got a 3 year standard warranty. Great deal for same price as from Apple.

I don't normally buy from eBay especially this expensive because of this. Looking at the prices it seems a decent deal with AppleCare though - no?

I wouldn't have bought without either being new, with some standard some warranty, or AppleCare.

These 12.9 seem to keep prices well, this is a 2015 and it's still £500.

I could sell before AppleCare runs out suppose if buy it?

Or what's more likely is that he stole it. Bought it from eBay, but can't even show you the auction?

Wow.. Straight in... What's he stole? The iPad? The AppleCare? Both? Why presume this? New iPads are available on eBay.

I've never even asked to see the auction, I just asked if he was the original owner.

If it was stolen you can lock it now with serial etc can't you

There is only AppleCare+ for iPads, no "Apple care" without the +. If it has AppleCare+, it means it is covered even for accidental damage for a $50 fee. (USA)

There is no "3 year standard warranty" for iPads from Apple. That sounds more like a 3rd Party warranty, unless you're in some country that requires Apple to provide 3 years. Since you use £ in your messages, I'm assuming you're in the UK, which means exactly 1 year without AppleCare+ - https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

Your only concern should be if there's an iCloud activation lock (i.e. A stolen iPad where the owner hasn't unlocked the iPad from their iCloud account). Unfortunately there's no way to tell if it's unlocked until you receive it.

The 3 year I mentioned on sons new iPad was bought in a Apple premium reseller. The 3 year hardware warranty is from them yes. I'm in UK.

Not sure if it's + or not, with your info sounds like must be + but I'll ask.

No iCloud lock is on, you used to be able to check this previously with Apple's website but they've removed this for some reason.

The screenshot earlier shows the cover, doesn't state if it's + or not really though, can you get no + in UK maybe?

Thanks

Very likely +. Your screenshot shows "AppleCare Protection Plan", the same name listed at https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ in the rightmost column of the table alongside AppleCare+. Looks like for the UK, it's £39 per accidental incident. You should confirm by chatting with an Apple rep on the Apple website though.

Thanks I will do. He's in process of transferring over anyway, and all looks ok. So hopefully even though I haven't got the original receipt, the transfer, the serial check, his chat to Apple support should all be in order and ok. Every other time I've had issues they've just checked serial number anyway.

Do you think it's a decent deal? £500 for 12.9 32Gb 1st gen with AppleCare until end of June 2018?

Thanks
