Win-win situation.

The owner no longer gets a refurbished iPhone with reworked components. And it's cheaper for the consumer.

Uh, a refurbished iPhone is basically like-new to Apple. They’re reducing the price so that they no longer need to give you a basically new device. They’ll fix the glass, charge you (albeit less) and save themselves refurb units. It’s a win/win, but mostly for Apple lmao.

I suspect they are still using the rear system to fix back glass crack, as replacing the back glass without replacing other component is so tidious and time consuming, the glue that used for adhering the back glass is very difficult to remove

That's good news, I wonder if they would let you pay out of pocket to get the battery replaced during the repair.. Be like a new phone..
the battery is included in the rear system
I got mine replaced after I cracked my rear glass and it's 100% now.
The rear system include everything except the screen and the lens

I wonder is this available to exisiting applecare+ users? i.e. if you bought an iphone 12 last year, with applecare+ and then the back broke, would you get charged the new lower excess charge?

we can only add AppleCare+ during the first 60-90 days right? I remember reading something about being able to add within a year

If you pay for apple care, you are bad with money. What a waste.
This is the only comment that makes sense in this whole thread. It is another BS extended warranty (insurance) product. I wouldn’t insure a $500 car by paying $100 annually, so why would I insure a $500 repair?!

It's about time—

As far as Apple is concerned (i.e. for trade-in value), breaking the back is just as bad as breaking the front.

And ceramic shield is only on the front; in other words, the back is easier to break, yet for years it has cost $99 to replace the back vs. $29 to replace the screen. And let's not forget: the back doesn't need to be made of glass, a famously breakable material. It was practically a scam, so this is a welcome change.
Why do these phones have to be "traded in"? Why can't they be "returned, defective" when they break so easily?

They’ll say something else was broken and keep the $99 bucks, it never fails

Or they will be like if we make an exception for you... And I see the point. If you did it a day ago, a nd they made an exception, then someone else from two days will say but it's only another day etc etc etc. until those baby steps go out a month or more
