does that Magic Keyboard have to be purchased at the same time as when you bought the iPad Air?

And what about an Apple Pencil, or Smart Keyboard I might buy used off of eBay? I wouldn't expect those to be covered under my iPad AppleCare.

You just need to purchase Apple Care within 60 days of purchasing the iPad. The MKB can be added at anytime after that and will be covered for the term of your original Apple Care iPad plan.

Sorry to be a pain and ask but how would you add the Magic Keyboard & Pencil to the AppleCare+?

Originally tried purchasing the 12.9 iPad Pro with the keyboard and pencil but the Apple website kept removing my iPad from the bag. So I gave up on trying to buy all three at the same time and concentrated on getting the iPad first. Then I purchased the keyboard and pencil separately.

In the past as long as I had a related device covered by AppleCare the other device was also covered when I needed a replacement. In my case it was an Apple Extreme router that failed and I had a MacBook Pro still under AppleCare so they just replaced the router. Normally they have a record of everything you’ve purchased and can look it up. But now your AppleCare status appears in settings on your ipad so if necessary you could just take the iPad in to an Apple Store with the defective keyboard and get it replaced. In your case your purchase of the iPad and keyboard were made close together so any related device, pencil keyboard, etc. will be covered. Just keep copies of the purchase receipts just in case.

Thanks so much for replying! 😁 so it automatically applies to your keyboard and pencil, it sounds like. The Apple agents I’ve spoken to were all saying something different. One said I had to have purchased the items together with the AppleCare+, one said to call back with serial numbers, another suggest to cancel my order 😭

In the end, I cancelled my AppleCare (for now) until the iPad arrives. Then I’ll call them and set it up and hope that both the pencil and keyboard will be covered 🤞🏼

I hadn’t looked, is AppleCare available separately for the keyboard? If not just covering the iPad should be sufficient. What else would you use an iPad keyboard with?? The way you’re doing it should be sufficient though. I remember when I took my router in to an Apple store and they confirmed that it had failed they just looked up my purchases and saw that I still had a MacBook Pro covered under AppleCare so they just swapped it out.

It’s not, just the iPad. Says when you purchase your iPad with AppleCare+ that it covers your keyboard and pencil. But it doesn’t say whether you have to purchase them together or if you’re able to purchase them separately.
LOLLL, right? Not like you can hook it up to your computer (nor would you want to lol).

I remember when I had my issue with the router, it was several years old and out of any warranty. The MacBook Pro was fairly new, maybe a year or so with AppleCare still in effect, and again they just swapped it out for me. So I don’t think they need to be purchased together but they may not swap out something that’s 5 or ten years old but that router was close to 5 and I got the newer version when they swapped it.

Thanks for the big relief, wasn't going to return the iPad and wait until July to get the new order!

If you read through that article linked to above you’ll see that it says if you bought a 2018 iPad Pro in November of 2018 with AppleCare and just recently bought the new Magic Keyboard you’d still have 6 more months of AppleCare coverage for the new keyboard. So it’s irrelevant when you purchase the devices as long as the coverage is still in effect for the primary device, in this instance the iPad. For me it was the MacBook Pro which was purchased maybe two years or so after the router.

I read it but was confused with what Apple’s customer service reps were saying over the phone when I called. Contradicts the things I’ve been reading online. Agh.

Thanks so much for your help! 😁

If such an issue ever comes up, make an appointment at a store. Hopefully by that time you can just go back into a store. In my experience they tend to bend over backwards for you face to face, especially when they see what kind of money you’ve been spending. They once gave us a free new iMac when our old one couldn’t be repaired properly and was 6 months out of AppleCare.

I already have my new magic keyboard for my M1 iPad, I wonder as well how Apple knows it’s paired with my M1 iPad

You’re totally right about that! Toronto currently has a stay-at-home order so access to stores is limited to pick-up and returns. I’ll see what the Apple agents on the phone say when I call again once I receive the iPad. Fingers crossed! Thanks for all your help 🙏🏼

The first time I called I was told it all had to be bought together under the same Order Number to be eligible for AppleCare+, which didn’t really make much sense. What if you decide a week later you’d like to buy an Apple Pencil to go with your iPad?

I’ll be that annoying guy and call in again once I receive it, see what they say 😅

Mine wasn’t bought together. And I was going to subscribe to Apple+ for monthly payments so AppleCare wasn’t even included in my iPad order.

I’m sure Apple will understand by my date or purchase of the keyboard that I bought it on the same day as my iPad Pro. Even tho I physically received it on April 30.

Yeah, I hope so too! Especially given the issues that were occurring during the whole purchase process - having your iPad removed from the check-out bag. I’m sure we’ll be fine and covered 🤞🏼

I had this with a time capsule I bought from eBay! It failed, took it into Apple, was honest where I bought it, they saw I had an iMac under AC and just swapped out the TC there and then!

Thats pretty cool that they include the Magic Keyboard on your iPads AppleCare subscription

You can even take in broken cables (lightning etc) and get them swapped out, as long as you have AC on a device that uses those cables. Got 4 iPhone lightning charging cables swapped out before.
Really? I didn't know that. Thanks for the info!

I hadn’t even thought about that possibility. Thanks for posting it. I have found in the past that if you have maintained AppleCare on a device they will pretty much swap out anything that is remotely related to the device. And those cables do not hold up well over time.

I bought a magic keyboard from Walmart early (on April 25th), since they had them on sale for $100 off. Then, I preordered an 11” iPad Pro and bought an Apple Pencil on the same order through Apple on April 30th. I already received the pencil.
I plan on getting AppleCare once I receive my iPad. Will all three devices be able to be under the plan given my circumstances?
