No this subscription is useless, having using Apple devices for more than a decade and I never had problems with them... My family who also use Apple devices also never had any problems. 20 per month is 240 per year and 2400 in 10 years !
2400 in 10 years on 2000 loss in 1 second. You do you, but it’s a great value.

Although I am not a mad fan of subscriptions. If you give me the option to pay yearly also it would be much better. Rather than many coming out monthly.

Agreed. I have never had Apple Care. And never had an issue that would warrant paying for it.

I found it more useful many years ago when I had more problems with the MacBooks, iPads and iPhones I purchased. They seem to have gotten more reliable over the years.

I usually don’t buy it when I get the base model. But, I think it’s decent value on the higher end configurations I usually buy since it’s usually the same price for all configurations.

The subscription does make it more likely that I’ll keep it longer than needed, since I’d usually rather self-insure a four year old device. The bundle AppleCare pricing means that I’ll probably just keep coverage on my three most used/valuable devices.
The reliability has gone up and the repairs have gotten somewhat easier after Apple started heavily selling Apple Care. It makes sense as they have an incentive now to do so (as the more reliable and cheaper a repair is the more they keep in Apple Care profits). It is one of those rare times where they're incentivized for our benefit.

Before someone jumps up and down to say "but Some Brand's appliances aren't anymore reliable with the push of extended warranties compared to 30 years ago when this wasn't the norm!" The incentives are DIFFERENT! Shocker, but they are! People typically buy those extended warranties through a third party. That allows the manufacturer to profit off repairs by selling replacement parts. They then have an incentive for the appliance to need a few repairs during the extended warranty phase. The extended warranty company has a similar love for it as the fear keeps people buying them.

I could be persuaded to buy Apple Care when it was a one time purchase. Especially since my Amex would at 1 year to the end of it making it somewhat attractive on a MacBook where you might need a battery by year 4. But the subscription pricing model is far too expensive to make it make remote sense.

For 3 years on a MacBook I'd be paying $720 (20*36). That's bonkers. That's halfway toward a new MacBook at that point.

I have AppleCare+ on my 2019 i9 iMac. Unfortunately, AppleCare One won't work for it because it's more than four years old.

Further, once you get AppleCare One, and a device's age gets to four years, it appears you're out of luck -- Apple won't warranty it anymore, and you can't switch back to AppleCare +. On the other hand, if you instead purchased AppleCare + for that device, then you can extend the warranty on it indefinitely once the original 3-year period expires.

Another issue with AppleCare One is that it's a monthly subscription service. If you have AppleCare+ for three years on a device and you want to sell it after, say, two years, you can transfer the warranty. But once you go onto a monthly plan like AppleCare One, then warranty transfer is not possible, thus reducing the resale value of that product.

I.e., when you purchase AppleCare+, that's considered to be associated with the product. So if you sell the product, AppleCare+ transfers along with it. On the other hand, Apple considers monthly subscription services to be associated with the person who signed up for that service, so it does not transfer when you sell the product.

Granted, most people don't sell Apple devices that are less than three years old, but it's something to keep in mind.

Bro I work outside where machines can crack my phone and AirPod Pro at random in my pockets, apple care is useful to me since at randomly I could have a destroyed iPhone I rather not spend 400$ repair for a 80$ replacement lol, I seriously can’t understand how people like you think if it doesn’t work for you it means everyone has to be the same

to follow up

canceled all subscriptions aside from amazon prime

buh bye apple one, game pass, chat gpt, and numerous others.

Working on this as well.

End game is one domain+IMAP email service only and that’s through Mythic Beasts here in the UK. No storage or cloud dependencies, no monthly streaming payments at all, no paid up insurance, no expensive hardware, no data I don’t control and no rug pulls, upsells and dickery. I’m done.

Yeah, but it replaces my $3,899 Vision Pro, ipad and iphobe if i accidentally break any one of them or if the ipad or iphone are stolen. So, its well worth the cost to me.

There is the 1 year warranty, if your device works for the year, it shouldn’t have problems after…
You know that components don’t have infinite life right? NAND chips will eventually die after enough IO. Batteries will degrade.

But if they still work after the first year I guess not? 🤷‍♂️

I wish that I could add minors' in my iCloud family devices to my account. Seems lame to need $20 per person if I am not using my 3 and have room for my kids' things.

Everything is a subscription these days. People are tired of monthly subscription.

For better or worse, "subscriptions" have been a way of life for a long time. Decades ago, it was more print newspapers, print magazines/journals, print newsletters, music clubs, premium channels, video store clubs, etc.

All extended warranties are a silly investment. Sure they can pay off, but the chances are very, very small - which is why companies offer the insurance.

Similar can be said about all sorts of insurance, especially if not used. I think most realize insurance/warranties can largely be a waste of money (if not used) but part of what they are buying is peace of mind. People are willing to pay a low(er) known cost to avoid risk of a potential high(er) cost/loss.

quality should be so good coming out of Apple these days that AppleCare should be unnecessary. If it is necessary, it’s time to leave the brand!
Not really how insurance against accidental damage works and if you use your devices in field, and depend on them… there will always be a need for a product like Apple Care.

What really makes it a must though…. Is Apple’s forced economics.

iPad Pro 1TB… £1500 ish new. Out of warranty… no AppleCare … break a screen, £700 repair … only 90 days of warranty on that repair. “We recommend you buy a refurb for the same price” … sure, for a 128GB or base model. No genuine parts , no aftermarket decent repairs since there are no genuine parts available. Apple’s own repair process costs the same as the store repair, except risk you mess it up, still no coverage. How many times could one afford to get the screen fixed if they want 5 years using their iPad.

It’s a shame some good intentioned politicians around the world did put the right pressure on Apple to make right to repair work, and they basically complied but made it sort of useless and not fix the economics of repairing a device yourself or having it repaired properly.

But in Apple’s defence…. Yet to see any company in the world produced something as magic feeling as the M4 / M5 iPad Pro…. The thin / light / quality of the screen. It gets near defiance of physical. Feels like Jony Ive consulted on it lol

You're amazing, but not everyone is you. I've cracked iPhone screens, camera lenses on iPhones and sustained liquid damage on a Mac. AppleCare saved me a ton of money.

In Australia we have a free warranty for 2 years on all electronics and 3 years for premium electronics.
Aren't prices on electronics super-high in Australia? Sounds like that warranty isn't "free" after all...

A base MBP M5 is $2000 in the US. In Australia, the same model is A$3200 ($2233 USD). Looks like a $233 warranty to me! 🙂

Not necessarily. You are comparing the price in Australia which includes tax (GST) against the price in the U.S. which excludes potential sales tax. The pre-tax Australia price is A$2,908 or around $2,029 USD. The pre-tax U.S. price for same product is $1,999 USD. The pre-tax difference between Australia and U.S. is only $30 USD.
