I purchased an Apple Watch Series 3 38mm for my daughter for Christmas. It cost $169 plus tax. I usually don't buy extended warranties instead opting for cases or screen protectors for my phones. The reviews I saw for screen protectors didn't seem too promising and my daughter didn't want a case. I started thinking about adding Applecare plus but the cost plus one repair would be almost the cost of the watch itself ($49 + $69)

Is it worth getting getting Applecare for such a low end watch? How much does Apple charge in for accidental repairs without Applecare? Thanks.

Honestly you’ll only win if you happen to use both repairs otherwise it’s probably better to go without it at that price.

Thanks for your response. Any thoughts on Screen Protectors that are worth while?

I have owned a series 4 since launch basically and it’s fine and I’ve had it hit somethings like metal and etc because of my job and it’s scratch free with no protector. It should be fine but YMMV.

I am using screen protection, have been on all of my watches. The screens are in perfect condition. I'm sure they've saved me from getting scratched up. I've had the best luck with ArmorSuit.

They're not perfect and honestly, none of them are. They all eventually peel up at the edges and have to be replaced or removed.

Regarding both Apple Care and screen protection, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. Not sure how active or careful your daughter is with her technology. I hope she enjoys the Apple Watch.

I have nailed my apple watches on pretty much everything...I have a scratch...on the body of one of the Watches. Things happen but I have never scratched the screen. Apple Care...I will reserve my thoughts on how I feel about them...which gives you my thoughts on them.

I did not buy one for my Series 1 and lasted almost 3 years, just got a Series 3 and didnt get one either. I use it every day, gym, work, etc and have not had an issue except once. I was updating the watch and it froze, sent in for repairs with no questions asked by Apple, they sent me a replacement.

The watch is one of the most expensive things apple sells to repair. And many times it's not something a third party can attempt without a large risk of failure due to the fragile nature of all the components. I'd highly recommend the AppleCare+, for the low amount it is on the series 3. Especially a teenager or kid. Something is going to happen to it. A screen protector won't save you if it cracks underneath it...

The cost ratio to actually repair the watch given what the watch would be worth without AppleCare, would put you upside down. You don’t need AppleCare with the Series 3 Apple Watch, especially given what Apple would charge you after the fact.

Best case scenario would be if you broke or need your series 3 replaced in a year or two, you’d be given a series 4 refurb.
