I placed a online BTO iMac and added the uplift to Apple Care (At the education discount rate)

My question is will this start from the date my iMac arrives or do I apply it myself meaning I could apply it just before the standard 1 year warranty ends?

It adds 2 years to the year you already got when you bought it.

You could have purchased it the day you bought your computer or the last day of the original warranty, and it wouldn't make any difference, except that now your telephone support won't run out after 90 days.
