I dont think shareholders are going to like this. Apple is renowned for its customer service. And it takes a huge cut less than a week after the death of the iconic CEO? Not a good idea. At all.

I love how a huge cut to good customer service means that they no longer will replace your phone when you did something to break it.

Please tell me how it is their responsibility to make up for your own mistakes? What they were doing was above and beyond but that doesn't mean they aren't offering good customer service when they decide that too many people abuse their hospitality and they need to offer some other way.

Personally, if you are going to get applecare anyways, the extra 30 dollars is worth the piece of mind plus the 50 if and only if you drop it is a good deal.

If you weren't going to get applecare, then why do you care? This is no different for you than before. Except now you can't abuse your phone and hope that maybe apple will be super nice. And they shouldn't be *expected* to do that for you in the first place! To bitch that all the sudden they have horrible customer service is ridiculous and shows you have a lot of entitlement issues.

Personally, I'm not one who usually buys Applecare. But this would make me more likely to purchase it (but I don't expect that they are going to give me a free replacement if I drop my phone or spill water all over it. If they did I'd consider that very generous of them and very lucky for me).

Or, you can just buy the SquareTrade warranty for $99 that covers 2 years for accidental damage (with $50 deductibles) - same as Apple Care+, but did I mention that it is for 2 years? Oh and I should also mention that it also covers water damage, including water immersion. Ha!

And also, if you're like me and had the iPhone 4 covered through them and you're upgrading to iPhone 4s, you can cancel the protection of the iPhone 4 once you've upgraded, and they'll prorate the difference. In my case, I bought my iPhone 4 in October 20. With my upgrade to 4s, I can cancel my SquareTrade warranty and get $50 back, which I can use toward my new 2 years warranty of my iPhone 4. Double Ha!

So if you buy a 4S and do not buy Applecare right after your phone hits a year and has no warranty, it will cost $199 to get an iPhone 4s White 32GB replaced?
Assuming they continue with the replacement price being $199, yes.

Second question from what I am reading is it will cost you $99 to add a second year with two accidental drops +$50 each incident, so essentially $200 for up to two years.
Yes, full 2-years of warrantee and accidental damage coverage, but it only cost you $100 if you don't damage your phone, so you're looking at $200, $150 or $100 depending on if you damage it twice, once or not at all. Even without damaging it, you could have it replaced for defects or known issues at no additional charge. The way I read it, the $49 "service fee" is for instances of accidental damage.

Without AC+, after your year is up, it sounds less likely if not no chance they will replace your phone free of charge for both normal issues and accidental damage.

With three iDevices in the family (six after Christmas as we got the kid's iPod touches), Apple Care just does not make sense. You are basically buying insurance, but the price of the insurance on multiple devices will effectively pay for another device.

Not really though, because you'd need a new cellular contract to get the $200 price (let's say you're getting AppleCare+ for two $200 4S's). And you won't be able to get a new phone on a new contract until your eligible for a new one, unless you want to pay early termination fees, which defeats the whole point.

This obviously is the idea of Tim Cook. The minute Steve dies, they change the policy. Apple is just becoming a big corporation with no soul. Steve would have never gone along with this idea. Tim Cook will ruin Apple.

So under standard warranty, if you shatter your phone; will they still offer the $199 replacement option? If so, all this hoopla doesn't matter since no one expects to receive a new unit for free just because they were a clutz and dropped it.

Try to bring your shattered Blackberry to your carrier and get them to sell you a discounted device - they'll give you a new device alright, for full retail price.

But, do you get Apple Support??

Should I insert a "Ha" here??

To me, having the benefit to walk into my local Apple Store nd let the geeks there take care of my problems is worth the $99 price tag.

FWIW,
AppleCare+ Covers Water Damage:

"3.2 Accidental Damage from Handling
If during the Coverage Period you submit a valid claim notifying Apple that the Covered Equipment has
failed due to accidental damage from handling (“ADH”), Apple will subject to the service fee described
below either (i) repair the defect using new or refurbished parts that are equivalent to new in
performance and reliability, or (ii) exchange the Covered Equipment with a replacement product that is
new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability, and is at least functionally equivalent to the
original product (both individually known as a “Service Event”). ADH coverage will expire and all
Apple’s obligations to you under this section 3.2 will be fulfilled in its entirety before the end of the
Coverage Period when Apple, as a result of ADH claims, has provided to you two (2) Service Events.
ADH coverage only applies to operational or mechanical failure caused by an accident from handling
that is the result of an unexpected and unintentional external event (e.g., drops and liquid contact) that
arises from your normal daily usage of the Covered Equipment as intended for such Covered Equipment.
ADH coverage does not include (a) protection against normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement,
reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct associated with handling and use of the Covered
Equipment, (b) protection against any other act or result not covered by the Plan, as described in Section
4.2 below, or (c) any resultant damage to the Covered Equipment that arises from one or more
conditions described in Section 3.2(a) or (b). You will pay a $49 (U.S.) dollar service fee for each ADH
claim, and may be asked to provide an explanation of where and when the accident occurred with a
detailed description of the actual event. Failure to pay the service fee or provide information relating to
the accident when asked will result in claim denial."

Unable to purchase Applecare+ with iPhone 4S Preorder

I knew about and looked for the option to purchase Applecare+ when I made my preorder for the iPhone 4S, but no option was available and I had to purchase the regular Applecare package.

The second paragraph is the plus. The first is not. Applecare+ is set up exactly the same.

Quick question as I'm just quickly browsing the thread. It says that Apple's typical replacement fee for a damaged iPhone is $199. Does this include accidental damage? If so Apple Care+ doesn't seem like a great deal.

Cost of replacing 0 iPhones in two years with accidental damage
With AC+ - $99
W/o AC+ - $0

Cost of replacing 1 iPhone in two years
With AC+ - $149
W/o AC+ - $199

Cost of replacing 2 iPhone in two years
With AC+ - $199
W/o AC+ - $398

Is this correct? If so it seems like rolling the dice is probably worth it unless you are convinced you are going to damage your phone. It only costs $50 extra w/o Apple Care+ for 1 replacement and you save $99 if you don't need to replace.

Did I get something wrong here?

damn if they could match att stolen phone thing or at least lock the phone this would be a great investment.

Apple takes a bath on free replacements. Just because they are very successful doesn't mean they aren't a normal business. They still provide an unparalleled level of customer service...

The great leniency that Apple shows in replacements IS why they have amazing customer service ratings.

And Apple is NOT taking a bath on free replacements. It seems that their profit margins are stupendous despite this interesting service model that they thought of. Not some 'cry baby' customer.

It may be a factor but its not explicitly why they have high ratings.

If you go to your local Appple Store, you can get a refund for the Previous Version of AppleCare and get AppleCare+. My local Store guys can do that for you.

AppleCare Phone support offered if I wanted, I could call them form the Verizon Corporate Store on Friday and they could hook me up over the phone if the Corporate Store didn't have the option to sell me AppleCare+

I don't think the $199 is without AppleCare. I think you need to have the standard $69 Applecare to get the $199 Replacement, am I right??

I'm not sure, I'm basing it on this wording in the original story,

Apple will allow users who did not purchase AppleCare+ to add it to a replacement phone if they damage their device and need to have it replaced. Under the program, customers needing to replace a damaged iPhone would be given a $50 discount on Apple's standard $199 replacement fee if they also purchase AppleCare+ for the replacement device, for a total cost of $249.

This implies that if you didn't purchase AppleCare+ you can get the replacement for $199 and then if you want AC+ on the new replacement you can add it for $49 ($50 discount).

The wording is confusing so I wonder if anybody knows if it currently is Apple's policy to allow accidentally damaged phones to be replaced for $199 even without AC (ignoring the fact that some are able to get Geniuses to waive that fee).

That, I don't know, I purchased AppleCare for my IP4

This is the AppleCare Page:

http://store.apple.com/us_epp_151906/product/MC253LL/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

From that Page:
"The AppleCare Protection Plan does not provide coverage for accidental damage from handling. See AppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete product details."

So if AppleCare Standard didn't cover it, why would they do it for $199 without it??

I think the $199 is for Problems with parts and function, not Accidental Damage.

I called up customer care on the day of the pre-order and told her I forgot to add the AppleCare+. She stated that they were having system issues and she will try to add it later on. I then received a phone call from her and it went to voicemail. Basically she stated that they tried adding it to existing orders, but it caused a bunch of issues regarding the AppleCare+ being added to the wrong serial number.

She stated that I can come in and add it at any Apple Store.

I have the voicemail just in case they can't do it.
