So people bitching about this being bad customer service...

So not replacing your item that *you* broke is bad customer service? I think then being nice and sometimes waiving the replacement fee for something I did was above and beyond but it's not something I would *expect* out of them.

You guys are spoiled and the reason I hate the guy who said, "The customer is always right." Cause I'm sorry, the customer is not always right or reasonable and companies who cater to you guys have made you guys think that it is to be *expected* and not just them being really nice. And you guys are being spoiled brats if you expect that Apple should replace the item you broke or else you are going elsewhere.

Things break without abuse. I had an iPhone 4 with an unresponsive home button that was replaced on the spot 6 months out of warranty. A phone should not break that quick but its not a problem as it was replaced with minimal hassle.

If I buy a laptop worth what a lot of people earn in a month, I want it to last more than a year. Get it?

Hmmm...

While this sounds great, I am a little skeptical.

See, in the three years that I had AppleCare on my 3GS, I had it replaced three times.

First time was water damage. Clearly. Red indicator. Moisture in camera housing. The works. They replaced it. Crazy, right?

Second time, I'd dropped it and the display cable came detached (I think), but since it was in my Otterbox, there were no signs of abuse, so that might be why they replaced it again.

Third time was because it would not sync to iTunes because of a supposed connector issue. That ended up not being the case - it was actually my then-motherboard's BIOS that was to blame.

Anyways, I do like where AppleCare+ is going - I just hope there is still that "one time grace" for water damaged phones, that I have heard many people getting and have gotten myself. Unless, of course, it is included with the $49 fee.

For those of you with an iPhone 4, how durable has it been?

I have owned the 3gs for almost 2 years and have dropped it so many times on concrete, tile, asphalt, etc. and outside of getting scratched the phone still works and the screen has never shattered. The biggest damage is a half inch long hairline crack at the bottom where the charging cable plugs in.

Can I expect similar durability? Or will the front/back glass break easily on the iPhone 4/iPhone 4s? I'm not worried about scratches, just broken/shattered glass.

Thanks.

I have a slip on hard case that is beaten all to hell... the phone is in great shape. Its been very durable.

Apple Care is a waste of money. I have tons of friends who work at the Apple Store and they say just walk in with a smile, feed them the usual of how much you lover their products, blab blah blah, and they'll bend over backwards for you and fix or replace for free. Works all the time.
Reading comprehension...

Replacement screen is $100 if you buy the parts and install them yourself. It's not really that hard to do. I don't have a degree in computer science or any kind of IT hardware certification, and I have fixed (with the help of the interwebs) pretty much every type of Mac and or Apple product that has been released in the past 10 years. Also, cracking stuff open is interesting and fun.

So let me get this straight, it's $99 for a warranty that I still have to pay $49 when I file a claim? So it's $148 for one claim? I'll take my chances that in 2 years I'll need a new device (broken screens aren't covered) and if needed, just pay the $199 for out-of-warranty service. It's a $51 gamble sure, but given that most people would break the thing before an actual component goes bad (batteries and screens are not too complicated to replace) I'll take that "gamble". :)

Exactly. I was crunching those same numbers and agree with you completely.

Except that the Applecare would cover non-accidental issues for a second year. With subsidies now being 19 months apart for everyone, a lot of folks will in fact be keeping their iphones for two years.

With three iDevices in the family (six after Christmas as we got the kid's iPod touches), Apple Care just does not make sense. You are basically buying insurance, but the price of the insurance on multiple devices will effectively pay for another device.

I have dropped my iPhone 3GS many times, but it has not cracked. Now that I am getting the iPhone 4S, I am going to get a sleeve to carry it in because of the glass back. My iPad 2 has a neoprene sleeve for carrying and a smart cover for normal usage. I just can't bring myself to start buying AppleCare for all these devices -- seems like a deal on the Mac desktops like iMac, but a bit much on the portable stuff Apple makes. Going to take my chances and just be careful with it.

Doesn't work if you buy your MacBook XXX in the US and then have a problem say in Europe. Apple Care has you covered, good will not necessarily.

THE MBA's have begun

THE MBA's have begun the changes and thus Apple becomes just like the rest over time. Too bad really.

Yes, broken screens are covered. The $49 to file a claim is ONLY if it's an accidental damage claim. If something just goes wrong with the phone through no fault of your own then you don't pay the $49. Go read the specifics on the Apple website so you can make an informed decision.

Ok, they are covered, my mistake. I just replaced 3 screens, they cost $65 each, shipped. $65 < $148 however, is it not? Heck, same site sells iPhone 4 batteries for $13.99. In other words, parts are cheaper to replace yourself than to file a claim, even for accidental damage.

I wonder if they need to then update their terms and conditions? They seem at odds with the requirement to buy at time of purchase.

4. What is not covered?
(viii) A pre-existing condition on any Covered Equipment if you purchased the Plan after you purchased the Covered Equipment.

11. General Terms
(x) You must purchase the Plan while your original iPhone is within Apple’s One Year Limited warranty. Apple is not obligated to renew this Plan. If Apple does offer a renewal, it will determine the price and terms.

You realize the thread is about "damaged" iPhones right? Not malfunctioning iPhones where a button stops working and not laptops.

transfer

And remember, I think applecare will transfer to a new owner since it is tied to the one device, so that would help hold up resale value at the time that the iphone 5 comes out and you want to sell your iphone 4s

Possibly true. But my guess is that if you have Applecare+ and take your phone in with a cracked screen, they most likely will give you a replacement phone, not a new screen. I'd feel much better about getting a new phone, rather than fixing the screen and hoping the drop didn't cause internal damage. Plus it wouldn't void the warranty, whereas replacing the parts yourself would. Because later you might have something go wrong with the phone (non-accidental damage) and if they find out you messed with it, they don't have to cover it at all.

For you, fixing it yourself may be an option. For a lot of people (myself included), it's not. I have no desire to try to repair a phone myself.

I have ever used a case, 1) cause I love the look of the iPhone 4 and 2) I enjoy using the Apple Dock. I have dropped mine on the concrete and tile several times with very minimal damage. The damage was so little that when I started having issues with the A4 chip turning the screen yellow when it warms up that the Genius Bar replaced it no questions asked. Outside of a few light scratches and some very minor dings on the metal band it's pretty tough.

So on my 27" iMac that is two years old that just had a HD and Superdrive replaced could have been done for free without AppleCare??? Who would have thought.

I highly doubt that would have happened, plus when I get ready to sell it over the next few months, I will easily get my money back on the AppleCare as the new buyer will have piece of mind and be willing to shell out additional cash to buy my iMac. It worked last time and I got a pretty penny for my 2 year old 20" iMac I sold before I bought the current one that I have.

Sorry. Meant to say "iPhones" only. Haha.

Greedy. The company should go to heaven with Steve

Apple now have tremendous pressure to get more money to pay the new CEO's bonus.

From the article you're commenting on...

"With the shift to AppleCare+, Genius Bar staff will no longer have the option of offering free replacements, so customers who have been aware of Apple's informal replacement policy should be mindful of the change."

Looks like Apple is not in the philanthropy business - but the profit making business. Enough freebies for you "loyal customers".

Hi there! :)

I can tell you I didn't hesitate to purchase the Apple Care + when I ordered from the online Apple store.. I do that with all my  purchases

Exactly, and I feel the opposite. I like to jailbreak/unlock my devices, if I am able to do so. Should Apple swap my device not only do I need to resync everything all over again (initial sync of 25-30GB of data is a tad slow), but they might give me a device that 1. May not be unlockable, or worse 2. Unjailbreakable. Also in my experience apple does not give you a "new" device for warranty replacement, they used refurbished devices. At least they have in the past when I made in warranty claims on past iPhones.
