iPhone 7/Plus Applecare transfer

Thinking about getting new phone. Current ATT Iphone 7 Plus still under applecare til march 2019. My 13 year old niece wants an iphone. She wants a 6s. Her mom has them on a MetroPCS. I have the unlock code from AT&T not sure if phone will work on MetroPCS. Should i transfer the Applecare plan to her or just keep it my name.
 
As long as you are available to handle the warranty services, if needed, leave it in your name. There is a cost to transfer, I think.
