Hi all,

I was just wondering, as I've never had to use an incident of AppleCare+ before, exactly how it works to get service?

Say I smash my phone and it needs a screen replacement. Can I just walk in to an Apple Store & wait for them to do it?

What about for more severe damage where it looks like a total replacement is necessary (& the required £79 excess) - would I get a replacement straight away?

Thanks.

Of course. An employee may tell you that they will have to send in the phone to be replaced or repaired and that due to limited availability, they may or may not be able to give you a full replacement at this time, but typically after an iPhone has launched, it would be an instant replacement device. it all depends on what iPhone you have. If you have the iPhone X, they may give the same 3-4 wait times that we see online depending on your carrier, color and storage size.

In April 2016 when I had a 6s (Now I have an 8 Plus) I accidently dropped it at a McDonald's which cracked the screen. I went right away to the Apple Store without an appointment, saw someone within 5 minutes and was told to come back 2 hours later to pick it up with a fixed screen. Now I did have AppleCare+ so I'm not sure if that helped or not.

They booked me in with the Genius bar they assess and review the situation then make a decision on replacing the handset if need be

Speaking from personal experience, walk in Genius Bar service can be hit or miss. I have been told that there are wait times of several hours, and on another occasion I was told my device would not be evaluated same-day. Generally it's a good idea to make an appointment before heading to the Apple Store, IMO. The Apple Support app makes it very easy to schedule a Genius Bar appointment right from your iPhone.

AppleCare+ gets priority. Not sure if it helped in this situation

Totally understandable if the phone is just out and not in stock. Not planning on totalling my iPhone X this month while supplies are short ;)

Call and request an express replacement. Which at the same time gets you a fresh device and the same deductible.
