How does filing a claim against Apple’s insurer make it “not worth it”? How is it any harder than filing a claim against your own insurance? In fact, filing a claim against your own insurance is- -worse-, as it might raise your premiums. Not so against Apple’s insurer.
Part of what I think differentiates AppleCare+, vs the extended warranties at other places / retailers, is Apple is much more willing to let things go, for the betterment of the consumer.
I only get AppleCare+ on certain devices, where it makes the most sense given my use case / risk tolerance. But when I have had to use it, I have to say, it’s always been a fantastic experience. As long as you don’t go in there with a “sense of entitlement”, bossy-style attitude, and just be fair and reasonable, I’ve found Apple store employees will do
whatever they can to help you. Even in situations where there is possibility for bad actors to take advantage, I’ve found employees will usually give their AppleCare+ customers the benefit of the doubt, and usually push repairs/replacements through.
Whereas basically every other 3rd party extended warranty, they’re doing everything they can to NOT approve a claim. Part of it is there’s a history of abuse (“this is why we can’t have nice things!”), and so they’ve closed loopholes that can be exploited, even though it means some legitimate customers no longer can get their situations approved. Part of it is that these insurance companies are businesses out for profit, so they incentivize their claims folks to DECLINE as many cases as they can justify.
That’s my experience at least. And why I never buy extended warranties anywhere, other than with AppleCare+.
So that being said, the fact that the Theft/Loss portion of this is handled by a 3rd party (FYI, it’s AIG in the US), does make a difference to me. And diminishes the value of the T&L part of AppleCare.
Also important, this change also means you cannot get AppleCare+ without T&L, which you previously could. On my iPhone 15PM, I have monthly AC+ at $9.99/month. At the time, you could get AC w/out T&L ($9.99) and w/ T&L ($13.99). As mentioned, I chose the $9.99. Now if I were to get a new phone, I can only get AC+ w/out T&L, and have to pay the $13.99.
Or pay $19.99/month for AppleCare One. I’m sure part of the strategy / intentional by Apple. Makes more situations where getting AC One is a “deal”. Not faulting them, but it is a little unfortunate.
