Okay so I received my trade in refund for $642.00 as an electronic Apple gift card, can I use it to add AppleCare on my phone on line? I tried it earlier and after performing the diagnostic test, I don’t have the option at checkout to pay with the apple gift card? Any suggestions?

If my experience last year is helpful, you can use your Gift Cards in an Apple Store to buy AppleCare+, but you cannot do it online. Not sure of the logic, but probably some device checking for theft or loss goes on on premise. Just a guess....

This is true. They have to use a hand held device that can accept the Apple store cards and then scans your Serial # and applies it to the purchase of the Apple Care+.

My story:

1sr rep didn’t know this when I traded my 2 old iPhones 6s & 7 for white Apple store cards. I couldn’t load it from my phone or online. She said to call Apple Support. I called Apple support who tried to apply it by leading me online only to find there was no way and I had to go back to store.

Went back to Apple Store and 2nd rep knew what he was doing and got me squared away with that hand held device. It took 2 days for my phone to update it was protected in Settings/General/About.

Hope this helps out.

Which device did you trade in and what were the specs? I'm curious to know what yielded $642.00.
