I'm purchasing my first mac on monday, a 2.2GHz Blackbook with 2 gigs of ram. Would i be able to get applecare next year, or do i have to buy it when i buy the mac?

You can get Apple care anytime WITH IN the standard warranty period.

So you'll have one year.
