They knew about it last year too ... My guess is the necessary convergence of factors was delayed and NOW Apple is stuck with the New Year situation

This couldn't have come at a worse time for me. My first gen 17" mbp needed a new logic board repair for the second time after the first one was replaced and miscellaneous other problems so I called apple customer relations and they signed me up for a new MBP 17" (Sweet, right!?!) They told me they were on back order and it would be a week or so. (This was on Friday) My ship date is still telling me 7-10 business days. I have a custom order (2.66ghz, 320gig 7200 hdd, glossy, 4gig) For now I'm stuck on my old 05 hp :(

I wonder:

Apple INSISTED to me that the new Unibody 17" MacBook Pro had the EXACT same graphics defect related to Quartz Extreme that all 2008 MacBook Pros and all current Unibody MacBook Pros have. This is the defect they've been working on for nearly 11 months!

But I wonder if they just can't bear to ship their new flagship 17" with such an obvious and devastating defect.

Or, perhaps if this unit DOESN'T exhibit that defect, shipping it would open them up to replacing a ton of MacBook Pros for extremely annoyed and vocal users that have been unable to have the problem solved.

And what defect is this exactly ?

Thanks JustinNYCity. Frankly, I've been browsed this site for more than 1

year, I just registered cause' I really wanted some help from those who have

more experiences on Macs, but I didn't think people would give their attitudes

as "help" like that. So disappointed, probably I shouldn't ask anybody here.

Well - first of all, you might benefit from dome thicker skin - forums are known for "directness".

That said - we don't even have clarity for the delivery on the new 17", much less what cpu future Macs will use. f you need it now get it - if not, wait as something new and better is usually on the way. I am trying to hold out for the mobile version Nehalem MBP very late this year or earl 2010.

Ok, I meant:

Should I wait for a little longer to buy an MBP, or right now is the best time

to get one? Will Apple switch Core-2-dual to Quad-Core later this year? I can

wait if Apple changes the processors in a few months!

Thanks.

This argument is always asked and I always give the same answer

If you need it now, get it and you will love it. If you want to wait, feel free but there ALWAYS seems to be something new around the corner

I love all the sources here too but rarely do things come out on the date they say so it could be longer

I was able to get my current 2-3 shipping charge dropped, then upgraded to next day for free, and got 100$ off my current older. I wasn't mean just nice and concerned since this was my first mac purchase and the woman was very nice.

Noticed in your signature that the MBP you're waiting for is 2.93 Mhz. I think you should order a faster one, that's going to take days to startup. :D

Wouldn't it have to be either;
A) The screen
B) New battery

They didn't release the 17 with the other models and now another delay? I know it happens to be around the Chinese New Year but had it not been so late to the party already I would agree, but it has been months between the 15in release and now.

This is the very reason Apple is leaving Macworld Expo. They HAD to have an announcement so they gave the public the 17-inch MacBook Pro. And they HAD to say January. Had they said late February, people possibly would've bought elsewhere or would've bought a cheaper one. So they say January and then quietly email those affected.

I can't blame 'em. It's a game that Macworld Expo has put them in. I, for one, am glad that they'll be able to announce products when they're ready and are able to sell the products on the day of the announcement.

I highly doubt this was just something that came up. Phil Schiller knew he had to lie the moment he opened his mouth with his timeframe. But I don't blame them... again………... I am glad for their exit of Macworld. I'll miss the annual keynotes (it's become a huge part of my holiday celebration), but I'm tired of the lame keynotes with stuff only being announced, half-baked and product being promised and then given a bump like this one.

Given Apple has the power over ALL their announcements, we'll be a lot happier in the long run.

This is bogus. A little explanation would be nice, it sucks paying 3.2k for something and then having the rug pulled out on you, especially when you are relying on it for your job.

Sons of bitches.

Relax, Apple isn't going to get Quad-Core processors for about 2 years.

Core 2 Duo (Now)--> Mobile Dual i7 (14 Months) --> Mobile Quad i7 (2 Years)

Dont you just love it when people think Quad Core is the best thing since sliced toast without even doing there homework.

More cores does not equal faster.

The best stuff is going to come out in around a few months or years, if you can wait, do it.

Intel's next laptop CPU, Nehalem (aka Calpella) is due out around October of this year. Will Apple bring out a 17" MBP with that processor in the fall or will they wait till MWSF? Oh I forgot, no more product announcements tied to MWSF. Now how do we guess when new products will come out?

Hopefully this isn't delayed because of a defect and more of a supply issue.

I would suggest for those planning to make a laptop your only computer to add an external monitor to it when using it at home. Laptops will make your posture very poor if you are looking down while at your desk. You will look like Bill Gates!

Whats wrong with Bill Gates? He's a male role model:

I was told on the phone by Apple Customer Care that its due to a parts delay. This 'certain part' is delaying shipment of all the 17" MBP unibody notebooks. I was one of the first purchasers, so i'll be one of those who is pushed to Feb 19th rather than later.

Several readers have reported that Apple has sent out emails today indicating that the 17" MacBook Pro has been delayed by a couple of more weeks. The email indicated that ship dates have been pushed back by about 10-14 days to February 19th, 2009:These emails went out to those with the earliest orders placed immediately after the announcement that the 17" MacBook Pro at Macworld.

This, of course, means that the "Now Shipping" graphic that was briefly displayed on Apple's Canadian online store was a mistake.

Yeah parts of brains of the people making them.

well, that'S apple....maybe they ship it instant for additional $500 :D It would fit to their politics.

The funny thing is i'd actually pay $250 :p

The chinese new year is what went wrong. The entire country shuts down for about 10 days. The holiday started on the 26th of January and all those workers were not producing your computers.
For arguments sake, I don't think it is an option for Apple to pay "overtime" for them to stay. For many workers, the CNY is the only time during the year they can see their families.

Right, and since Apple has never, ever made anything in China before, this "Chinese New Year" you speak of took them completely by surprise.

Hey guys, I need some help.
I consider to purchase a MBP, but I heard iMacs are probably coming out with quad-core processors. Then what about MBP?? Is MBP gonna be used Intel Quad-Core too?? Should I wait ?? By the way, Snow Leopard will be available soon??? Really confused now, please please give me some directions!!!
Thanks guys.

Hi,
I'm not an Apple 'expert'-got my 24" iMac only in November 2007 & it was & still is beautiful. Just great for revising my thesis using Mac Office. I was a bit frustrated that 6 months or so later the CPU was updated BUT that seems to be the pattern with Apple. All the signs point to an iMac update soon & the 'Buyer's Guide' says 'Don't!' If you want that kind of desktop best bet is to wait.
I'm waiting for my pre-ordered 17" MBP & the wait is a bit frustrating BUT I'm sure it will be worth it-got my Applecare if it melts or gets tiger stripes or whatever.
I doubt Snow Leopard will be too far away from June 2009 BUT it will certainly be an easy OS upgrade.
I think with Apple or PC's whatever you buy now, there'll be something 'better' in 6 months! Maybe go play in your nearest Apple Store & go for what you want now (other than an iMac!). Spending our lives waiting ain't healthy-good luck.
