Apple is working on a next-generation version of the iPad Pro, and while there are no major design updates that we know of, there are some new features that are worth looking forward to.

This guide aggregates everything that we know about the 2022 iPad Pro so far based on the rumors that we've heard.

Mini-LED Display

Apple last year introduced an updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED display technology, and in 2022, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will continue to use the technology. There were rumors that Apple would also update the 11-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen because of supply and cost constraints.

Apple calls the mini-LED display of the iPad Pro a "Liquid Retina XDR display" that offers improved dynamic range with true-to-life details, vivid colors, and HDR. The current display in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses over 10,000 LEDs across the back of the display, allowing for up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1 million-to-1 contrast ratio.

Display analyst Ross Young has said that the 11-inch iPad Pro won't get the mini-LED upgrade after all because the 12.9-inch iPad is selling well enough that Apple doesn't need to add mini-LED to the smaller tablet. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said that mini-LED display technology is too expensive to be added to the 11-inch iPad Pro this year.

M2 Chip

The 2021 iPad Pro models adopted the same M1 chip used in the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and 13-inch MacBook Pro rather than continuing to use an A-series chip as typical iPads do.

That put iPad Pro performance on par with Apple's Macs, Apple is rumored to be planning to stick with Mac chips for the pro-level iPads. Apple introduced the M2 chip in the 2022 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, and is expected to use the same chip in the 2022 iPad Pro update. The M2 chip features an 8-core CPU and an 8 or 10-core GPU.

MagSafe Charging

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the next-generation version of the iPad Pro will support MagSafe wireless charging, much like the iPhone.

Apple could be planning to add a glass back to the iPad Pro and has been testing such a feature, but due to concerns about breakability, Apple might instead opt for a larger Apple logo made of glass that would facilitate wireless charging.

If Apple opts for the glass Apple logo, it would presumably have magnets underneath and a MagSafe charger would be able to align with those magnets for quick and easy charging. One of the iPads that Apple is testing is said to have MagSafe with stronger magnets than the magnets in the iPhone, and it is also said to allow for faster wireless charging speeds.

Reverse Wireless Charging

Along with MagSafe wireless charging, the next-generation iPad Pro could support reverse wireless charging capabilities, which would let the iPad be used to charge iPhones, AirPods, and other accessories by laying them on the back of the iPad.

New Connectors?

Japanese site Mac Otakara claims that the next-generation iPad Pro models will feature new four-pin connectors at the top and bottom of the device, which would be separate from the smart connector. It is not clear why Apple would add new connectors, but the site suggests the connectors could "assist in powering peripherals" that connect to the USB-C port.

A New Apple Pencil?

We've heard rumors that Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Pencil, but most of that information dates back to early 2021 and we haven't heard anything since then. It's unclear if we're actually going to get a new Apple Pencil.

There were rumors that there would be a black Apple Pencil option back in 2021, but that didn't happen, so it might not have been accurate.

Release Date

Apple could potentially hold an event in October, but if that doesn't happen, a new iPad Pro could be announced via press release. Apple is expected to begin mass production on the iPad Pro in the fourth quarter of 2022.

At least one major retailer is already preparing for the launch of the 2022 iPad Pro models, suggesting that a launch is not too far off.

Future iPad Pros

The 2022 iPad Pro models will continue to use standard LCD and mini-LED display technology, but Apple is working on OLED technology for future Macs and iPads. Apple could add an OLED iPad to its lineup starting in 2024, and the iPad Pro could perhaps be the first iPad to adopt an OLED display.

Display analyst Ross Young believes that Apple will release both 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays, with a launch expected in 2024.

Apple may adopt a hybrid OLED technology for its future iPads, which would combine both rigid and flexible OLED panel materials. The information comes from The Elec, and the site says that Apple is reluctant to rely solely on flexible panel technology for larger screen sizes. The Elec believes that hybrid OLED iPads could come out sometime around 2024, a rumor also echoed by DigiTimes.

Apple is also said to be working on a larger-screened 14.1-inch iPad that's set to come out in 2023. It would be sold alongside the existing 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models as an iPad with a larger display, but it is not expected to feature ProMotion technology and will instead use a display similar to the current MacBook Air. Little is known about the device, but rumors indicate it will feature an M2 chip with 512GB of storage to start with and 16GB memory.

So expecting the iPad Pro's to be updated in 2022? Wasn't its suppose to be 2023?

The M2 chip will be used in 2022 versions of the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and of course, the iPad Pros. It will have the same 7 to 8-core CPU, but it is expected to have updated 9 to 10-core GPU options.
That is only a rumor.

I just want the XDR display on the 11" model. The 12.9" is too large for what I need it for. Everything else is gravy. I'd love iPadOS to bleed even more macOS features in. It's already pretty great as a laptop replacement in some instances. A native terminal without side loading something would be amazing.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro (3rd gen) which still is fast as can be but I'll upgrade to an M2 11-inch iPad Pro 2022 *if* one software rumor comes true... Gurman and others are reporting this year Pro apps including Final Cut Pro are coming to iPad Pro, but only on M1 & M2 versions. That would get me to upgrade far more than a mini-LED screen.

The number 1 feature request from me is landscape mode as the default configuration...meaning having the camera on the broad edge of the tablet! That'll be the point when I upgrade next, regardless of what iPad I'm currently using. I'm really not enjoying / appreciating Face ID on the iPad as much as I did Touch ID....my thumb is always in the wrong place at the wrong time!

🤞🏼

Still have my 12.9 2018 model and loving it. Tho the last few gens have been too minor to warrant an upgrade
It’s all about software revisions at this point. In terms of hardware, the iPad is at a stagnant point. And I don’t say that in a negative context, there’s only so much Apple can add/alter on a year-to-year basis. I’d say 90% of the iPad is the OS experience to the user.

Reverse charging keeps being rumored as long as wireless charging has been available. Not betting on it at this point.

i agree. i can't imagine apple wanting their beautiful ipad laid on its face only so you can lay your iPhone on the back then only to have super slow unsatisfying charging (because that is what reverse charging is) of your iPhone.

I’m not sure why Apple would go to an iPhone-style MagSafe charging. They already get wireless charging when using the Magic Keyboard and given the size of the battery in the iPad Pro’s, wouldn’t a more modern MagSafe from the latest MBP’s make far more sense? In fact, why not use the exact same MagSafe charger style that would allow for even faster charging. The iPads already have tons of magnets built in, so they don’t need a middle of the back charging puck magnet set for add-on third party things.

Of course, the thing I’d really love to see is a titanium chassis, to go along with an updated titanium Watch and iPhone Pro…but I won’t hold my breath.

A new Apple Pencil is interesting. I would guess the top part will get functionality. Maybe tapping the top can perform user-defined functions.

A new iPad Pro could be larger, maybe 15". The DAC for lossless playback on AirPods Max using usb-c to 3.5mm cord could be the best in the world.
