But will they fix the fact that the garbage file manager corrupts external drives?

Doubt it.
This is the first I've heard of this. Is this a widespread issue? 🤔 I don't connect external drives to the iPad that often, or if ever, actually. But it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility for me.

Happened to me today, and led me to discover many posts on Reddit and the official Apple forums going back over three years.

Still not fixed.

That's nice - but 12.9" tablet is already quite huge to hold in hands for extended period of time. So thickness and weight are not major features I look for on my iPad Pro.

What about better usability? Improve multitasking and window management. Stage manager is abomination. Allow playing multiple sounds at once etc. Make it more like macOS and less like the iPhone. Make it real device to work on other than light office work and video calls.
So it sounds like you actually would be in need of the thinner and lighter iPad Pro in spite of the snide comments earlier. I do think that most people tend to use these larger iPads in a stand rather than holding them, unless you are watch a movie and even then a stand helps. Mine 11” IPP is almost never out of it’s keyboard stand.

I’m not sure that Apple sees the iPad as a device for complex kinds of work. Simple things yes, but they don’t seem to be building it for more advanced workflows.

The better play would be to put an M3 in the Air and an M3 Pro in the Pro. Not sure that’s technically possible without a fan (maybe run it slower than on a Mac).

I honestly think that this was part of the reason the Pro and Max chips diverged this year to eventually be able to offer the Mx Pro as an upgrade in the iPad, MacBook Air and Vision Pro. Maybe it doesn’t become possible until M4, but I think it is inevitable.

Any chance it goes like this:

iPad: M1 chip, starts at $449
iPad mini: M1 chip, starts at $499
iPad Air: M2 chip, starts at $599
iPad Pro: M3 chip, starts at $799

This would bring stage manager and full screen mirroring to the base iPad and iPad mini. Stage manager would probably be useless on the mini's screen, but not when plugged into a monitor with BT keyboard/mouse.

M1 in an iPad mini is a battery life disaster waiting to happen… The 6th gen Mini already has a pretty noticeable disadvantage. If they give it an M chip, it almost has to be a down clocked M3 for the power advantage of 3nm plus the updated Neural Engine for whatever AI features Apple has coming at WWDC.

iPad seems a platform super suited to AI, so I think A17 and M3 is what we’ll see. Hopefully with a some significant updates to iPadOS this year.

Very unusual case use, but my mother can't use TouchID on any device. She's been to Apple Stores many times, and seen the Apple Community forums from others with her issue - she does have a fingerprint, but it is quite worn. She can train a TouchID device and use it 4-5 times within 5-8 minutes. After that, it fails to recognize her fingerprint and she has to set it up again. Her fingerprints apparently don't have enough definition to make a consistent map. There's a whole community of people like her [plus people w/o fingerprints!] who can't use any TouchID or TouchID-like system. So for those edge cases, FaceID would be wonderful [she uses an older mini but types her passcode to unlock it - would love a FaceID 7th gen mini with an M1 or M2 inside!]
Face ID should be on ALL iPads by now (Airs, and especially the quite expensive now, Mini), except the cheapest ones.

Apple's fake attempt at using this as a point of differentiation on these is ridiculous by now.

Add 100 or 200

I welcome seeing a new model come out, but I don’t know there’s much to appeal to me. Still find this ipad pro 2021 edition to be 90 to 100% perfect in terms of speed, battery life, screen size (11”) … based on this writeup from MR there’s not much new (?) coming along but yes bring on the updates, it’s about due for a refresh I guess!

I'd only buy another iPad in my life if MacOS runs on it as well. Have too iPads lying around, they turned obsolete too soon. Still work without problems. Its a shame really. I am tired of spending money on these babies. Even the latest iPad M3 is would not be able to harness the full power of that machine. Its like having a sportscar engine but being forced to use spare tyres to drive.

Same goes for all the iPhones. Newer is not better anymore. Upgrading does only make sense to run a secure system or to use new technologies. A new phone just to take a picture with a marginal better camera system and 1 specific new software feature that only a new phone can sport? Naaaaah.

Fun fact: my 2017 10.5 inch iPad Pro still has enough head room for a few more years with the exception of being not able to use stage manager. Wish I had purchased few more magnetic covers from Apple as mine is torn and those are not in sale anymore for this size. 3rd party options are not as "snappy".

No new rumours then. How are they going to get a decent camera in a near 5 mm thin device? iPhone 15 is 8.25 mm and SE is little under 7.3 mm by reference. My 2017 iPad Pro is 6.1 mm current iPad Pro is 6.4 mm. Thick by comparison.

Give us a nice titanium frame and it will be a very beautiful device with a very large camera bump. Please some colours like the blue iPhone 15 Pro. March cannot come early enough.

My mom has the same issues, seems like its more common in the +60 crowd. I'm hoping for a dual solution both faceID and touchID.

I might be very interested in a new iPad Air, later.

I was checking up refurbished Air’s recently after my old 2013 died, and even if it had VERY limited use I miss it. But decided I am not in a lot if need if it now. My 2 mini’s is enough as iPad’s now.
A new MBA have way more preference to be bought when M3 comes.
But next iPad will mist possibly be an Air.

Unless the SOFTWARE improves significantly, I doubt many will be that interested and in most of these banal features.
Unless the new hardware allows for incredible new software features, I can’t see myself updating my iPad anytime soon.

A larger iPad at a much cheaper price point will be good. Very possible that the new Air can be released with M3. Hopefully there will be some nice new colours.

I was ready to trade in my 7th gen for an 11" Air when the rumor of the bigger Air was revealed. I'm definitely interested in the 12.9" if it starts at $799.

Sorry, I don't follow you. How I actually would be in need of thinner and lighter iPad when it's almost permanently in my magic keyboard case?

It's in the case mainly because of the hardware keyboard. I hate using on screen keyboard. The productivity goes down fast when switching to on screen keyboard.

And as you yourself correctly said - even if it was light as piece of paper, I would rather keep it in the case or stand when watching movies or when doing video calls. I just don't get why would I prefer holding a thing for 2 hours straight.

So no, I really don't need thinner and lighter iPad. My previous comment stands. What I would prefer is more usable software, more productive device.

Please explain which improvements you would like, and how is this impacting your day to day use of iPadOS.

If you could do it without using the words “file system”, you‘ll get bonus points.

Any significant changes to iPadOS won’t happen until beta versions are released at WWDC or a general release in September. This is a hardware rev. Unlike iPhones where new iOS versions are released a few days before the iPhone, iPad and iPadOS releases are rarely at the same time. Any changes to iPadOS in March will be only to support new features not present on older iPads.

I know. You can take my words as a wishful thinking.

These news about hardware rev is nothing more than rumors anyway. So it may be completely wrong too.

This is the only criticism I’ve had of iPadOS. Otherwise, I think it’s just fine since I have zero interest in running macOS on iPads because I prefer a touch environment over a mouse-driven one. There is no ejection mechanism for external drives, which leaves open the possibility of corrupting an external drive. I’ve never had it happen to me, but I’ve only attached an external drive on occasion (probably fewer than 20 times). Others have reported corruption that requires a repair done on a Mac.
