In the category of something I do not want at all, a foldable iPhone. The problem with phones in general is the feature list for change is just too small. What we need is a major shift in something like batteries where it could last 3x as long as it does. A new camera that is X percent better doesn't appeal to 90% of the world, same thing with screen resolution. How many people can really tell the difference?

I wonder how this foldable iphone will fit in the lineup. Will it be positioned btwn the regular iphone plus(Air) & the iphone pros? Or will it replace the iphone pro? Will there be 3 different iphone lines? The regular iphones(Airs), the iphone pros and the foldable iphone? So many questions.

Wait - wasn’t the point of making a foldable to reinvigorate a stalling smartphone market? Now foldables have stalled already too?
I think in part because they still aren't 100% ready for prime time. Good enough for many but not for others. I suspect (hope) Apple won't release one until they can do it right. I know one complaint for many has been the seam in the display. I'm hoping Apple's slim iPhone 17 is testing out some tech that will help keep a folding phone thin when folded. Then they just need to have someone make a better foldable display.

Something like the The Mate XT But with the screen not showing creases would sell well and at a premium.

Right now there is no real market because the tech is not at the level needed for mainstream adoption.

This sounds like that movie, build it and they will come.

Yep a revolutionary new battery that packs a lot more energy into a smaller batter will be a game changer for phones and any wearable. Actually even big things like EV cars. A lot of promising research is happening now but I don't know when something great will hit the market

I have no doubt that it won't replace the current pro designs until the demand for the pro design plummets in favor of the foldable (if ever)

All I know is it better not have that awful protruding bezel like you still see on many PC laptops even today.

My gosh, can the MR design team not come up with anything more creative than that hideous rendering of a current design iPhone broken in half? They have used it a few times in the past now, and it gets more cringe with each posting.
  • If you’re going to criticize someone’s work, maybe try offering constructive criticism - or even suggest an alternative.
  • In my mind, you don’t get to criticize someone’s creativity unless you are actively putting something out there yourself. Where’re your creative works for the world to ridicule as you have here?
  • These websites are operating under increasingly tight budgets and resources, so a writer might have to learn the basics of graphic design. If you want to keep this type of content free, then I suggest you give them a break.
The fact that flippant, condescending, or otherwise rude comments online are the norm - and even celebrated with ‘likes’ -does not make them acceptable, if you ask me. I refuse to stop calling them out when I see them.

There are people behind these articles and graphics. Try being nice - even online.

This would at least solve the problem of the phone not lying flat due to the camera hump. I can imagine some useful scenarios but I think interest has waned because the tech just isn't there.

iPhones are waterproof and survive all kinds of abuse. I don't think Apple can make these that durable, and don't want a big downgrade. One good thing about iPhone in my opinion is that each one is (generally) the same as the last but more, very few regressions.

This would have to be a separate product at best. Can't just make all iPhones foldable. Maybe this will finally replace the mini? But with Apple's swelling product lines it's possible.

With today’s rumour that the iphone 17 pro max will retain a titanium frame and not get the rumoured aluminium re design overhaul.

This folding iPhone is sounding very tempting more than the air. It would be design overhaul i have been waiting for since i purchased my iphone 12 pro max back in 2020.

My only concern is if apple does like the air and leaves out pro features.

The foldable market particularly in the US, Apple's biggest market, is by no means saturated. The only players are Google who does not yet make a flip style foldable, Samsung (has made the same flip foldable phone for years) and Moto who has yet to make a meaningful dent in the market.

Also none of those options run iOS so they are DOA for Apple users. Apple users (I can only imagine as I am not one) are likely bored out of their mind with the recent iPhones with very few changes. Releasing a flip foldable, anything to break the monotony is just what Apple and its users need.
Maybe it's not saturated, but I think it's a smaller market than you think. I don't want a folding phone at all. Would the extra screen real estate be nice, sure. But I'm not willing to sacrifice the durability.

This will not work. There is no new market—it's saturated.

Doubtful. Android-only foldables at the moment. You may not WANT Apple-innovation to focus on this, but I like the idea. I'm probably not alone.

The problem with foldables right now is that they’re both insanely expensive and feature durability regressions compared to typical slab phones. It’s still gonna be a while before the bang-for-buck ratios level out.

Yeah - because most of us wait until our iPhones are obsolete or broken before upgrading, right? Get out of here. I upgrade my iPhone every two years or so because I WANT the upgrade - not because of any durability regression.

I consider myself to be an Apple enthusiast, but there are many who upgrade every single release. Now that consumers can routinely turn in their 'old' phones and get a credit for the latest model, I don't see the number of annual upgraders decreasing.

It wouldn't surprise me if the FIRST foldable left out some pro features. They'll target it at a different segment than the pro market. Then if all goes well it may gain pro features in later years. New designs often require some compromise until tech advances allow big features in smaller packages. Gotta start somewhere.
