Haha, Apple can’t get the most basic AI features on a phone and you think it is releasing AI glasses?

The only thing it’s releasing is a load of gas in a press release that will state coming soon in 2052!

Another product in search of a problem. If only I had a device in which to take pictures and videos to share. Oh wait, what is this thing in my pocket? Oh it’s my iPhone. Other than walking to the shower in the gym, my phone is with me every second of the day.
But you can’t really take POV video audio as you go through your day without occupying your hands non-stop.

… Apple appears to be leaning into gesture support, and it's an ideal input method when no screen is available to interact with.
I am already getting a kick out of picturing people gesticulating in public … snapping fingers, opening & closing fists, wiping the air … “Oh, hey, do I know you?” - “So sorry, I wasn’t waving at you, I was just opening a menu on my glasses …”

I’m hoping that smart glasses will eventually become a hearing aid replacement. At the moment I’m up for AU$6500 for a pair, but I’d be more than happy to pay $1000 a year for glasses with intelligent environment settings. The AirPods can already do hearing tests so the data from that could allow the glasses to be set up for my needs.

I am getting the feeling Apple are struggling to create new products that have a market segment currently. Just today I see:
  • AI glasses with no display - already significantly behind the competition
  • Vision Pro to be discontinued - doomed from the start
  • A 20 inch foldable iPad that weighed 3.5lbs and cost 3x that of an iPad Pro - pop those AI glasses on to see why that is a non starter
Maybe we just hear about Apple R&D projects more than ever and I am under no illusion that creating new products in new markets is very tough, it just feels Apple have lost their way slightly.

And is there a huge audience for that? I’m sure some people want that, but enough to support an entire product development ecosystem?
Exactly. Hands-free recording is just one rudimentary function, and people already do that by strapping a GoPro to their heads (helmet, whatever), and at least that way, they are not being covert about it

While I can see a use for AVP (I personally enjoy VR over AR) Smart Glasses have never made sense to me. It seems we are searching hard for the solution to a post-smartphone era, but why? Phones are small, convenient, feature packed.

I now have to wear reading glasses in certain situations, but I remove them whenever I can. Why would I want a computer perched on my nose?

64% of the US population wears prescription eyeglasses. Worldwide about half of humanity wears glasses. So, it seems there are enough people who have to perch something on their nose regardless of whether it contains a computer.

Prescription glasses have satisfied Norman's idea of invisible technology for hundreds of years. Few people who wear glasses give their use much day-to-day thought. Extending the function of glasses is a natural idea.

The advantage of smart glasses, IMHO, will be AR, not VR. Visual Intelligence on the iPhone is a cool feature that I would use if it didn't require me to dig my phone out of my pocket and remember how to invoke it. Smart glasses should allow me to casually glance at an object and invoke VI with a simple hand gesture.

The problem with smart glasses hasn't changed since Google experimented with them. They make privacy violation easier. I worked at Google during that era. Google had to ban the wearing of the glasses in certain areas, like gym locker rooms, because there was concern people would be using them to take pictures of others.

This has one huge advantage over the Meta Raybans that Apple get straight out of the gate, for free.

It doesn't have Meta associated with it.
Yeah, well, according to the rumor, the first version doesn’t even have a display associated with it.

It sounds more like one of those dumb AI “wearable pin” devices + hand gestures.

I just had LASIK, so, although I might need reading glasses in the intermediate future, that's a hard no.

Meta supposedly sold 9 Mio. Ray Bans, so that vlogger-market is there. But if it doesn't add something to my vision and not even has 3D cameras, I'm not interested.

If those glasses don't constantly scan your surrounding and permanently analyze the camera-feed, so they could answer instantly or make you aware of things AND can't be worn all day without charging, why bother? Just to wear an expensive but mediocre camera on your nose occasionally? Will invoking Siri work better than the airpods pro that only works in an urban environment if you ask loudly, repeatedly?

One, every company is hoping to introduce the Next Big Thing and they often use trial and error.

Two, capitalism dictates that being the biggest and most profitable is not enough if you aren't still growing.

So sometimes they try to make something the next big thing even if nobody is interested like 3d televisions.
