OR, don't focus on a headset. Focus on Eyeglasses. Lightweight, simplified use. Basic AR and some limited VR. All-day comfort. Something you'd wear outside. This continued focus on headsets is a problem, I believe.
I suspect Apple can't get the tech miniaturized enough to work with an eyeglass/sunglass form factor. So they launch "big" and become "thinner & lighter" over time... a well-established Apple approach to all new things.

I speculate that if Apple could do all they want to do in a contact lens, that would be this rumor. Goggles might be as miniaturized as Apple can deliver in 202X while incorporating all they are trying to make them do.

Googles in the 2020s, glasses in the 2030s, contacts in the 2040s, implants in the 2050s and we are all Borg soon after: "Resistance is futile" ;)

Contacts are impossible. Science fiction stuff. People rub their eyes. Contacts can’t come with tech problems. One tech problem or one injured eye and it’s a billions of dollars legal cases.

You're twisting my argument. I and others are arguing that these goggles, as presented, do not provide enough consumer use cases to be a viable product, and my reference to AR use on the iPhone was in support of that argument. Nobody is saying that you can't spend the money on them if and when they exist. Knock yourself out.

And that's because it's a relatively new market (in consumer space), with you and others not believing in the potential - even when people point out use cases that will likely be addressed when released.

Do you really believe Apple, a company that's very risk-adverse and well managed (as evidenced by it's success), went into this venture and market blindly investing many millions of $, without a spec of research, or collaboration with others (such as Stanford University's AR/VR laboratory)?

Even just regular every day glasses would be nearly impossible unless all the processing and battery is on the iPhone and images are transmitted to the glasses.

Just making a reference in support of OPs thinking about desiring a smaller/lighter version of the goggles concept... not a case for contacts or implants or becoming Borg.

I have little doubt that Goggles 2 will be "thinner & lighter" than Goggle 1... and Goggle 3 even more so. It is the well-established Apple way.

I'm excited to see what the product actually ends up being. However, it's going to take more than VR FaceTime to get me to spend what will likely be a lot of money on this thing.

I suspect this could be a turning point for Apple. If this flops then I can see this being very damaging for Apple as they really need something captivating. So far, this doesn't sound like a huge improvement over other VR headsets but I hope to be surprised.

Just you alone accused me of that... and only related to this ONE product.

But for the people confused that emoji wink doesn't mean "I'm joking", I do NOT think that Goggles are leading us to becoming Borg. I also do not think they have anything to do with FB/Meta/Zuckerberg/Crypto/Ponzi... nor put scars on our heads, drive up rents, have us all in virtual cages, et all.

Did you miss the emoji wink at the end? ;)

You know, we joked with you about science fictioning too much but I remember when I was young I had so many of these ideas and believed so many could become real. I mean real without any issues. But then I learned coding and product design and had to learn the hard way what’s possible and not possible. I used my account on Reddit to ask physics and hardware geek sub Reddits. There are a lot of people in those specific groups that are very quick to explain the challenges.

Man I can’t believe once upon a time I believed in Mars Colonization. That Musk guy keeps lying about it just so he can raise more money.

HomePod anyone?

Apple isn't perfect. I've been a customer for 40 years. They've had plenty of misfires over the years. I agree they are very risk-adverse and well managed these days but that doesn't make them perfect. They clearly believe AR/VR is going to be a big thing. What remains to be seen is whether or not they're right. I think at a $3K price point it's going to be very hard to sell this product.

I got a little more excited with each bullet point. Then they hit me with the $3,000….I’m out. I waited on Apple Watch until series 3 with cellular. Might have to be the same with this thing.

I don't believe this product, as being described in these rumors, will ever be released. I'd be willing to bet on that. I could be wrong. But many companies do a ton of R&D on products and in the end, don't release it.

The battery belt is the funniest part of the article 🤪 like a battery belt for geriatrics with a pp pump or colostomy bag 😖

We all need to appreciate that this is a longer-term thing and a WIP on the first iteration.

The headset at the start will most likely be a much more immersive version of what you can currently do on your iphone.

However there is no point dismissing technology in its infancy.
I see the limitless potential of AR. I am just not sure the hardware is there yet having played with the Quest Pro [hopefully Apple do a better job, but not sure how much better it can be].

However as Tim Cook has stated, AR is the future, like it or not - just not all the answers are there yet.

I think basically the iphone and ipad were the devices I dreamed of as a kid...... :)

it better not need a battery belt [ just an extra for more longevity]. That solution is inane.

You seem to have a perception that I'm some young, naive guy here. I'm not. I've been around the block many times. I also have a coding and product design background too and a pretty good grasp of physics.

What I have shared, I believe is possible in this rumored hardware with the right software. There is PLENTY of room for me to be wrong as I'm imagining based upon rumors about a product that does not yet exist. I simply see much of this product already existing and in use in existing Apple hardware. There's already bits of VR & AR, there's already cameras and lidar, there's already the ability to feed our ears sounds that are not actually being made in our reality environment, etc. Assemble them in a different way as rumored here and the things I've shared seem possible IN MY OWN OPINION.

I respect that you see virtually no potential and/or seem to be holding disgust/distaste for FB/META/Zukerberg/Crypto/Ponzi and now Musk against this completely-unrelated, conceptual offering from Apple. That's fine. Your opinion is just as valid (to you) as mine is to me. When this rolls out- IF it rolls out- it may be a big pile of ______ and worst product launch from Apple of all time. However, 6+ years of building rumors makes me believe there is potential here... likely beyond what any of us have imagined so far.

Apple has been working on this for at least seven years. I'm betting Apple's release will be within the next six months.

A recent SIGGRAF presentation (by an Apple competitor also collaborating with Stanford University) was fascinating. And pretty much confirmed what I believe Apple's entry will be.

I don’t want to say I doubt you but with those big chunky paragraphs and rambling I would not like to see what your code looks like 😂😂😂😛😛💩

Me too I was a PDA geek. Before that a scientific calculator geek. I still own that one and my little bro still has my 1997 Casio PDA.
I still have my original Newton. Its the only one I kept, after all the HP, Palm, Psion, Atari PDA devices I owned. I even had the Amstrad one....

If anyone has doubts about how tech has changed and developed, I think we are at the equivalent of this for headsets :)

Almost bought a Newton but didn’t like the writing system. Very slow recog. My fave for text entry was Psion 5MX.
