Why issue new software that won't fully work on the current Iphone AND the current Ipad? This doesn't make any sense...

So just stop improving? Stop adding features??

I have no interest in voice interaction whatsoever. I have it in my car and never use it. It's a PITA more than anything.

Hopefully this will be an improvement in the technology so that it won't be so much of a PITA.

I agree. While a "cool" feature, as I wrote above, I don't think I'll use it often. Surely not to annoy my collegaues at work, or to sound like a weirdo at whichever public transit at least. :D While walking down the street? Yeah, maybe if I want to get looks while giving my commands. ;)

At home, in the evening, darkness lit up by my TV screen... Speaking to my phone? That sounds a bit creepy and weird too, but one of few situations where it could be useful. :D

I'm guessing it will be best for those that drive a lot. For those that commute via train, bus, etc....it might not be as useful.

Even the iPhone wasn't cutting edge. It was evolutionary. They took the smartphone, something other manufacturers were doing....with even better features, and they polished it and packaged it in a way that was much more appealing and useful to the general public. I don't look to Apple for major innovation, I look to them to put those touches on technology that makes it more functional and useful.

What makes u think that people that are too lazy to type etc like normal people will get them to learn commands. One reason i havent used the already implented voice control is bc i just cant be bothered to look up let alone remember those commands

Speach recognition is only part of what Apple is doing. This is the first step twards AI being built into the operating system. It wont just dial numbers, it will act as your agent and do assigned tasks for you.

It wont just dial the restaraunt for you, it will make the resevation for you. it wont just dial the taxi company for you, knowing where you are it will arange for a taxi to come pick you up.

iOS5 is just the start, Apple will continue to expand the 'Assistants' ability to learn your preverances and accomplish tasks you assign to it.

3) 8meg cam is alright as long as the sensor has good low light capabilities

The article says the camera sensor will be "back-lit", by which I assume they mean it will be back-illuminated.
Supposedly that somehow means it will do very well in low-light situations.

(Personally, I have no idea exactly why back-illuminated sensors would be better than front-illuminbated, but I like what they are saying.)

RE: Voice recognition issues..

When I first received my iPhone 4, I remember trying out the voice commands, and being let down.. I'd try it every once in a while, but found it to be very hit-or-miss..

Then after yet another wired head set self-destructed, I broke down and joined the Borg.. I got a Jawbone...

Guess what? Voice commands now work perfectly for me. Even in a busy grocery store..

I've since tested this on other's iPhones.. It seems that the people with the most problems have either a wired headset that's putting body rubbing sound into the input or a case (or finger) that's blocking the 2nd microphone used for noise cancelation...

I've had each person try the same commands in the same settings with cases removed, or trying out my BT earpiece w/ their phone.. and most (not all) said it was a major improvement..

Shrug..

It's not always a software problem..

Combining the "latest" news from this and another site, the question now is: if in fact there are tyro models, a low and high end model-- will the low end model have the same innards (1 gb ram, etc.) ??

So by this logic they can never introduce new software that EVER requires a spec bump? When the iPhone 8 comes out ALL the software would have to run on the iPhone 4?

by that logic, we could never have anything new. ever.

So just stop improving? Stop adding features??

Not my point exactly - of course they will issue something which requires a spec bump. But if there’s not going to be a new ipad until feb 12 or later, we will have an IOS system running on a device that can't fully support it...?!

This is huge

Nuance is ok but not essential....Give me a faster processor, better battery life and a 4" screen and I'm happy...

Speak for yourself. Faster, brighter, etc are all minor details IMHO... voice is the biggest (and naturally next) interface frontier after multi-touch.

Voice control, if done right, will allow Steve's dream of ubiquitous, invisible tech (see Star Trek).

Not only important for blind folks, but everyone who's trapped in a car for an hour+ every day.

Who's your daddy?

Why is it with Suri that when you ask your phone, "Who's your daddy," it switches to a young chirpy voice before answering?

Android already has a similar feature (voice commands)... and I don't like it.

Maybe it's just how I've been trained to interact with devices... but I prefer touch input for any device (and even then I prefer physical to virtual keys). I don't want to talk to my electronics (voice) or wave my hands at them (like 360 Kinect).

When voice commands are 100% perfected and I can give complex commands to devices, maybe it will grow on me... but it just strikes me as an awkward novelty still.

That said, I'm excited to see what this personal assistant is capable of and how it improves the voice input landscape :)

I think perhaps that's the hope. I would expect this to work better than previous voice command systems in the past. Perfect? Probably not. More useful? Hopefully.

as long as it's not as frustrating as when I'm calling a voice automated 1-800 #, otherwise new iPhone should be made of rubber

I wonder if the speech recognition will actually be any good or if it will be just the same garbage we have had on Macs. Which has not seemed to have improved any since it was introduced in System 7 with the AV Quadra models.
If you listen to last week's THE TALK SHOW podcast ("I Tip Profusely") with Dan Benjamin and John Gruber, Gruber says that he's used the Nuance software and that it worked surprisingly well and much better than the Android stuff because, while Android's sends your recorded speech and handled Server-side, it appears that Apple's stuff is handled on the device itself. He gave it very high praise, which is a little odd because Gruber tends to hedge his bets and generally gives a several possibilities when it comes to making a judgment call or speculation.

So...

- New design with aluminum back like iPads and better antenna
- Slightly bigger screen 3.7
- 8Mpx camera with 1080p video recording
- Same 32GB tops
- A5 and 1GB RAM
- Assistant feature

Worth upgrading from iPhone 4? Mmmmmmmm... NO.

John Gruber praised iPhone? Amazing!:D

Great. Yet another "article" that refers to a rumour from another site as though it's fact.

First time to this site? That is what this site is. The article did not claim it as fact though, just that other sources Lso support this likelihood.

Amusing when first reply out of the gate is someone who clearly does not understand what this site is or does.

the Nuance/Siri voice-powered personal assistant will require the iPhone 4S/5 that will be introduced at next week's media event

The report notes that the sophisticated voice features will require the new iPhone hardware from Apple, relying on the company's A5 system-on-a-chip and a bump in RAM to 1 GB to support the heavy workload. Both the A4-based iPhone 4 and A5-based iPad 2 currently offer 512 MB of RAM.

Every version of iOS has pretty much done that

Everyone keeps telling anecdotes about there poor experiences with voice controls and what not but I find it hard to believe that Apple would tout this as the reason to upgrade unless it was damn near perfect.
