Apple today launched its annual "Back to School" promotion in Australia and New Zealand, offering higher education students, faculty members, parents of students, and select other staff a free pair of Beats Solo2 on-ear headphones with the purchase of a qualifying Mac with education pricing between February 3 and March 21.

Eligible models include the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Pro, including configure-to-order versions, while the Mac mini and refurbished Macs do not qualify for the offer. The eligible Mac must be purchased from the online Apple Store for Education or by calling 133-622 in Australia or 0800-692-7753 in New Zealand.

The qualifying student or faculty member will receive one pair of free Beats Solo2 on-ear headphones in Gloss Black, Gloss White, Gloss Red, or Gloss Blue, as an instant credit. Apple also offers a credit of AU$259.95 or NZ$339.95 for Beats Solo2 Wireless on-ear headphones, with the customer responsible for paying the remaining difference.

Apple's "Back to School" promotion in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and elsewhere last July and August also offered students a free pair of Beats Solo2 headphones with a qualifying Mac purchase. Last year, students in Australia and New Zealand were offered an Apple gift card worth between $25 and $100 with the purchase of a qualifying Mac, iPad, or iPhone.

Read the terms in conditions in Australia and New Zealand for complete details.

I tried on a few pairs of Beats in Target about a week ago. Literally some of the worst sounding headphones I've ever heard priced anywhere near that. Other manufacturers at least try. I was shocked, and to think that I was actually considering getting a pair (if they sounded good)...

Got a 70€ gift card in August 2014 with my MacBook Pro 15", and I will probably be buying a new one this summer with the Wireless headphones.

Maybe not the best headphone out there, but for this reduced price? Or sell them and get better ones.

No, no & no. Nobody wants Beats, what a lacklustre deal!

I couldn't disagree with you enough. Even though I already have a pair of Beats Solo2 wireless (which I love), I'll gladly take another pair to simply sell.

I like my Beats Studio Wireless headphones just fine. A coworker had me try his Bose wireless noise canceling headphones. He was telling me how well the noise cancellation worked on the plane.

After further research I learned that Bose offers wireless OR noise cancellation, not both in one headset. I didn't tell my coworker.

Some of you are so ungrateful for something that is FREE. You know they don't have to give anything right?
Wow. They're not free. You make it sound like I should be grateful for this gratis giveaway since I just have to make a back to school purchase this year from Apple.

They're not free, and as an enticement to buy this offer simply isn't anywhere near good enough. I read the offer as the promotion is potentially of interest but I have decided not to go ahead.

Yeah, you might want to keep that joke to yourself until after your BT is too old, if the internal battery lasts that long. The noise cancelling Boses have a removable cord, their own amplifier and run off a removable AAA battery for good reason. I just plug mine into an upgradeable BT adaptor.

Gateway drug.
The first one's free.
Well done, Apple.
Except in reality if you want to sell Beats headphones, you will have a lot more success if the person buying them never ever listened to them before..

Just take the $200 and run fast before that sweet $20 sound quality comes on.. :)

Northern Territory started on 22nd Jan - two weeks ago. And that list is only for state schools and not official.

For all of you that are critical of those that don't like the deal, saying 'free is free,' you know it isn't free right? This is a promo to get you to buy directly from Apple, so they don't have to take a wholesale markdown. Were you to go to any other retailer, you might get something like a gift card, or points towards a loyalty program, while Apple actually gets slightly less from the transaction. Throwing horrible, overpriced headphones that don't cost them much to manufacture is their way of cutting out that markdown.

In my opinion, their best promo was the iPod Touch, but I can see the gift card option as a close second.
