I totally agree. I think the big difference was Band of Brothers followed many characters and there was a real threat that who the story was following would die (and it really hit hard whenever one did). The Pacific only really followed 3 characters (only 1 of which was interesting as portrayed), so there was little threat they would be killed, nor were there the same bonds between characters.

I hope this series is more like the Band of Brothers format.

I think it was more than that. BoB was able to follow one company from Paratrooper training through the end of the war.

The Pacific not just followed three main people. They were in different groups for the most part. I assume they did this to follow more of the Pacific campaign. Otherwise trying to find one company would have cut out a lot of the island hopping done.

I think they did an admirable job with both. The Pacific had a much more difficult side of the war to follow. As there just isn't all the interaction with towns, villages and locals. Also by following three characters. We saw a more in depth look at the psychological effects of war. Which tended to slow down the pace of the show and made it more somber.

While both were quite brutal. BoB just felt more hopeful and upbeat. At least there were more moments of carefree levity. Plus experience the joy and gratitude of freed people.

I am curious how "Master's of Air" will go. I haven't read the book. I suppose I will now.

In my honest take, TP took a step back from BoB. The characters were not as dimensional, except for the one who was suffering from PTSD (if I recall correctly). Still a fantastic series that most others would give an arm and a leg to compete with. Hopefully Masters of Air is just as good as TP if not as good as BoB.

BoB is one of, if not my favorite series of all time. I've seen the series perhaps 40 or 50 times all the way through, read the book it is based on by Stephan E. Ambrose and visited a lot of the locations the battles and events took place.
As ex-military the series had a big impact on me growing up and wanting to sign up.

This could be incredible, I'm glad Apple picked this up and I hope they throw money at the project.

Ditto 100%. Though more often than every few years for me. :)

I also enjoyed The Pacific, but not to the same extent, and don't have the desire to re-watch it. I'm not 100% sure why to be honest. Something about BoB made it feel more like a connection with the real people to me.

I agree about BoB and The Pacific. The reason BoB is more compelling for me is that it covers one group of men through the entire war, The Pacific jumps around to different main characters. It feels less cohesive. In both cases I liked the books better than the TV shows.

So if they’re using an old success on their resume you don’t trust them. What if they’re new to the game and have no experience with show running?
Why, then you never trust projects that don't have people with 20 years of experience. :p

I think you nailed it. There's a 1+ hour BoB documentary (I think you can even find it on Youtube now) - yes, separate from the actual series. They interview a lot of the guys even more than they did in the series. You get a bit more of a glimpse of the PTSD those guys dealt with, for their entire lives. In The Pacific, you see it first hand in the series itself. In BoB, you don't really see that side of it as much.

I think the reason I preferred BoB to TP - apart from the fact that the European theatre is something I could relate to more due to the much heavier British involvement - was the consistent intensity of each episode of BoB where the pace of The Pacific changed significantly from one episode to another. I have no issue with the more introspective episodes, but it was the sitting down to watch an episode with a certain expectation but then getting served up with something else that was sometimes disappointing.

This is a huge series for Atv to land. As the pandemic winds down, and the limits to series production wind down as well, the catalogue can expand finally.

Can't claim to know how the scripts will be written, but the book is about more than just the bomber crews. WWII was the first time that the U.S. had conducted an air war and as a result had to learn things the hard way. For example, the reason the U.S. bombers had so many gun turrets was because the Pentagon initially believed that adding them would eliminate the need for fighter escort. It took catastrophic loss of life and planes for the Pentagon to change that view.
My dad was a tail gunner on a B17. Shot down over Germany towards the end of the war and a POW for 9 months. Liberated by the Russians as they moved west.

Band of Brothers was phenomenal. I re-watch it every few years and it still holds up.
Me too. I am glad that the ending never changes. :)
I was ok with, but wasn't as big a fan of The Pacific. Hopefully this new series is the same quality of BoB.
I liked The Pacific, but it was different in a large part because the campaign was so different.

Product placement is going to be a challenge for this one.
They could do it like Microsoft does on all those TV shows where there is a giant windows logo on the back of displays they did not make and do not sell.

They could paint Apple Logos on the planes like the crews used to paint Women and people’s names. :)

Good luck meeting the unparalleled quality of Band of Brothers
With Apple's track record so far, I feel about as comfortable as possible with Apple putting out something in BoB's ballpark in terms of quality. (In terms of the intangibles that BoB has going for it, that's a different story altogether).
