That's a lot of words to say "Yep, I'm being petty".

People like different things, it doesn't make them apologists. Apple iterated on the design and version three was fantastic. That's how product development works. They just happened to go a different direction because of feedback.

Again, just because someone likes a product doesn't make them an "apologist".
You can say I am petty, or even offend me, but things won’t change that it was a disastrous experience and even Apple admitted it.
I could say more words but…
It would be lots of words to say, Apple messed, they went back cause they realised the mistake, case closed.
Facts not opinions.
Liking a product / company != being an apologist.

Apologist = a person who offers an argument in defence of something controversial.

The argument is controversial, you are in defence of it, you are an apologist.

I don’t know why you take it personal, I personally prefers facts to personal opinions, as you prove, some are happy about it, so it’s subjective, what’s objective is what happened, and it proves it was a wrong keyboard for the masses.

I personally think the issue is overblown. I know some had issues but we had dozens of Macs at work at the time and not a single one had a keyboard failure.

Yes :) My guess is Apple only tested the emoji keyboard inside their offices. Offices tend to be a dust free environment.

Go away from the norm a little, like my open balcony case, then all bets are off.

I feel so bad for folks who unknowingly buy a preowned butterfly machine
It's a ticking time bomb with a prohibitively expensive repair

(going to turn into junk heading for the bin basically)

2016-2019 was such a sad era for Apple laptops

They should have been optionally recalled and folks offered a special discount or swap to something with scissors

This is completely wrong, I don't even know how you can think this statement is correct. Everything in the world is controversial, does that mean everyone who likes anything is an apologist? No, it doesn't.

Take your snark elsewhere or deal with getting called out on it.

Just open a dictionary.

Cannot have a conversation with you if you don’t know the meaning of words.

Your keyboard might be working, but it’s of little use if you don’t know the meaning of what you write ;)

It might be useful to know what controversial means as well.

So now it’s petty insults and trying to call me stupid for calling you out on your petty behavior? Time to grow up kid.

Whatever man, take your anger somewhere else.

I didn’t insult anyone, I tried to educate you as apparently you didn’t know the meaning of a word.
Now you are mad because I was right?

You didn’t call me out on anything, you did everything by yourself.

I don’t even know why you took it personally to begin with.

It’s a damn keyboard ( and an old one at that, not even used in new products anyway )

And don’t be triggered by a word.

You tried to make fun of me with a post that “called on me” but have been proven wrong by Cambridge itself and now you turn defensive.

I’m in the minority that preferred the butterfly keyboard. I wished they could have just made them reliable. If they came out with another pink 12 inch MacBook with a new and improved butterfly keyboard I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Dude... MR has a policy of non-shaming of non-native English speakers. FYI

I am a non native English speaker myself, I am not shaming but apparently he didn’t know the word and even tried to make fun of me by “calling out” on the very same word.

I tried to stay as polite as possible with a guy that too it personally.

The guy got triggered by a word without knowing the exact meaning, I just tried to clarify.

I'm not an Admin but based on past readings they take direct actions on this that results in unhappy endings.

I’ll pay whatever consequences, I won’t bow to bullies, he got triggered and tried to bully, I tried to react in a clean and educated way, I don’t feel I did anything wrong.
It’s a forum I’ll live even without it.
People should not act like mr big guy if then they can’t take the same attitude back.

Not only did the Apple Store not fix the stuck spacebar on my Macbook Pro 15" 2017 - they gave it back to me with a spacebar held down by tape - and I was downvoted on here for complaining about how they'd only fix it by replacing the otherwise perfect condition top case and charge me for it.

My Macbook 12" 2017 (which sees far more use than the 15") and Macbook Pro 15" 2019 (which I bought to replace the 2017) have been fine so far though.

"Another Cook debacle"

I sense that it was not so much "Cook", and much more of "Ive" (the main reason the latter is no longer with Apple)...

I don't know that Cook can escape all of the blame, since the supply chain is his pet, but nevertheless, this is right. Ive's industrial design demanded a new form of keyboard that would fit into an unusually restricted space. The same industrial design language was responsible for a raft of innovations, not all of them good ones, but not all bad either.

I'm fortunate I suppose that (I think) I only have one butterfly keyboard and it works perfectly well. That said, if it were a problem and no longer covered by Apple, I'd just plug an external keyboard in. It's not as if the rest of the computer could be considered only fit for the landfill when a lot of laptops are used with external displays in clamshell mode anyway.

However, if we want an example much MUCH worse in Apple's history than the butterfly keyboard, there's the PowerBook 5300. I'm not sure the extended repair program for that machine ever actually ended, but it was still going in 2004, 8 years after the model was officially discontinued. The keyboard was probably the only part of that machine that DIDN'T need replacing!

You didn't educate me at all, you went the pettiest route on an argument because you have nothing. You came here, insulting people by calling us apologists because we like the butterfly keyboard and I called you out on your pettiness. You're not clever like you think you are by trying to insinuate I don't know the meaning of words, that's the most pathetic form of argument.

Stop being a petty person and insulting others for liking something, that's all I'm saying.

This is strange I had my macbook 15 2017 for fixing the keyboard for 1,5 year ago and they told me that it was out of warranty. This was in Sweden...

Exact same thing happened with me with my 2017 at an Apple Store in Canada - about 2 years ago. Was by told by the "Genius" Bar that they werent doing keyboard repairs anymore and I'd have to buy a new one. I'm guessing they ran out of parts.

If you have one of these and don’t have any issues it’s worth replacing anyway. They replace the whole top case and battery. Mine was fine for 4 years then the t, 2 and space started acting up. Had it repaired and it looks brand new. It doesn’t get used much anymore but I keep it in a lined cushcase sleeve to keep dust out. It is slow af compared to any M1 Mac tho but is handy for some audio apps.

Apple refused to fix mine because of 2 months past the deadline. I still use today the MacBook Pro 2017 fixed as a second computer with an external Bluetooth keyboard.

This thing was an absolute disaster from day one. Just a garbage garbage design.
I hated it even before they started failing left and right. I tried to use the Retina MacBook as a replacement for my 11" Air, and it just felt like typing on a solid hunk of plastic.

So, ended up going back to the Air, nursing it along and sitting out several years of MacBooks waiting for them to go back to usable keyboards again.

When the scissor-switch keyboard came back, I noticed that "key travel" became a bullet point feature in the marketing .

I have a MacBook with this keyboard and never had an issue.. maybe it only applies to those disgusting enough to eat and compute at the same time?
If a keyboard needs to be kept in a special little clean room bubble, it's a failed design. End of story.
