Re-read the article and the above stood out for me, clearly it is recording, as in like "show me that drawing I looked at at store xyz this afternoon" - this is creepy, no other words for it.
I don’t get that at all from the quote in the article. It will save a photo in the moment when you ask it to, but it won’t be recording in advance just in case you ask it later. I also don’t see the latter to be feasible in terms of battery.

In areas considered private it is illegal.
Of course. And this is the issue -- your earphones have a camera, thus you will not be allowed to wear them where there is an expectation of privacy, whereas under normal circumstances, earphones wouldn't even be an afterthought. But since locker room staff aren't going to be trying to figure out which models of AirPods are camera-free and which aren't, there's going to be places that will just ban them all outright.

Kinda like how the iPod ushered in a new era of portable music that is now a miserable app and software experience unless you pay for Apple Music.
Apple got dragged into music streaming by Spotify and consumers. Apple would have been very happy to continue the previous business model of $1.29 songs and $14 albums, but the younger folks of the times preferred paying $10/month for full access to an enormous library.

Personally, I prefer the old model, but I'm also a relic.

Anyone else just hoping for a change in design from the pro 3 so that they might fit similarly to the pro 2? My pro 2s are on their last legs and I really hope these ones might fit.

These people are morons though.
To be fair there was a period where the US govt was promoting the use of x-ray scanners (not the millimetre wave ones in use now which are safe) so not all concerns were unfounded.

Or you could wait to judge them once they are released.
I’m not judging Apple, I’m judging the creeps that will record people with them. I know that you don’t have a reasonable expectation of privacy in public but that’s not the point. Like the Meta glasses, these could be used to record places that are not meant to be recorded and with so many AirPod zombies, most people won’t even notice.

Creepy...absolutely hate the idea of a device trying to do my thinking for me. Don't need more brain-rotting experiences. And I'm not willing to contribute to our collective creep towards totalitarianism. I've been embracing my inner You should read up on Luddites - they were more of a guild than anti-technology.

You should learn more about Luddites. They were more of a printing guild. Not anti-technology. Please learn more about things before you speak on them.

Having airpods in all the time is awful. This HAS to be apple pushing misdirection within a build... I cant imagine the usefulness of this at all.

I have already thrown all of my AirPods in the trash. I’m not even going to wait for Apple to disable them remotely when the new ones are launched. They still worked great but we now it’s a matter of time.

I’m just ready to get my credit card out and get the new ones.

Good call. You nailed it.
Why not give them to someone who can use them? Why trash working things out of bratty spite?

Not just locker rooms, but anywhere children play and people are partially clothed like beaches and swimming pools, clothes dressing rooms, doctors surgeries, the list goes on and on... I suspect this will be the first device class to be banned by municipalities and even entire nations because of the privacy concerns that would arise from such small cameras becoming normalised.
"partially clothed like beaches"? You mean a public beach were you've chosen to go to, partially clothed, joining 10,000 other partially clothed people, wearing that teeny tiny piece of fabric covering just the bits, that you spent big dollars on to look almost nude, and you're offended when someone takes a picture of you? And dressing rooms -- if someone other than yourself is in the dressing room, I'm guessing you don't care. And lastly, doctors surgeries (meaning a doctors office in the US)...bring it on. If I am naked in there and being recorded against my knowledge, I smell a hefty lawsuit. Who can't use a big payday?

If you weren't judging Apple, I must be really misunderstanding your comment: "This will be worse than the Meta Glasses that people are already complaining about, this isn’t a good idea."

That's making a subjective claim (judgment) about a product we know almost nothing about. 🤷‍♂️

We don't know if they could be used to do "creepy" things like you're claiming, unless you know more about them than is in this article.

How? This isn’t photos being stored for user access this is just to connect and search with Siri ai (hard pass on current goog/Siri)… at least that’s the feeling im getting here, no selfie cams…

Wonder if it could warn the person of imminent danger. Like a car coming right at them and they don't see the car because they are staring down at their iPhone.

By the time the sensors pick it up it’s already too late, is my guess…good idea tho, maybe in a few yrs?

not wandering around places with AirPods in (not that I own any).

You should get some they’re amazing for getting ready to go out or cleaning sinks and countertops etc… they’re lightweight and have decent noise concealing (at least pro 2s in my experience) etc etc, you forget you’re wearing them and just do whatever you need to…I just got some like a yr and a half ago or so…definitely amazing for working out so connected to Apple Watch it’s a real great workout experience.

A solution looking for a problem. Who has ever thought “man I wish my AirPods had cameras on them”

Yeah I can see some use cases around navigation or directions. Or looking at a restaurant you’re passing and adding it to a list. But none of these outweigh the privacy violations/exploits. Apple had problems with AirTags…just imagine what societal complaints AirPods with cameras will entail…

Again where does it say it’s abt taking selfies or posting or saving any photos anywhere here? Isn’t this all just for search/shopping/workouts etc

Write this down:

It's not going to be saving any images. That's what your phone camera is for. It will provide information on what it sees, and save that information into the new Siri and make it aware for Siri for you to ask about it later.
