What do you think of Apple's approach: almost a decade of OLED displays in smartphones, destroyed eyesight for thousands of people, and yet they have ONLY NOW managed to add PWM switch to an iPhone.

How can a large corporation ask money for accessibility feature that should have been there by default?
Moreover, how could they ignore user complaints (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) for SO MANY YEARS (2017-2025)?

Just think, the original MacRumors OLED PWM eye strain thread was created back in 2017. It took 8 years for Apple's engineers "to thoroughly study case and make their conclusions". It is beyond slow, it is almost atrocious level slow.

It genuinely makes me mad. Apple loves to brag about being "healthiest product", pulseoximeters all around, step counters, numerous trackers but they have been dismissing the "only 10%" minority who had TREMENDOUS eye strain and headache from OLED displays.

If you don't have eye strain from OLED I am SO GLAD FOR YOU, no need to write comments like "stop complaining go droid". Android is to blame that OLED happened on iPhones, specifically Samsung's AMOLED that people smh tend to "love". Lots of people (incl. me) have PWM eye strain. And the only solution to "buy 17 Pro". Insane!

My respects to Apple for adding this feature though, many people with obsolete/vintage iPhones who had to sit on old devices because of PWM now can freely go and buy adequate device with screen that you can make your own. Next logical step would be to add color profile switcher like on Mac, so you can use sRGB and disable temporal dithering/HDR functionality without low power mode.

Do you think Apple should have reacted faster and studied potential drawbacks of OLED screens before flooding market with them, or their decision that took 8 years was somewhat justified? Because tbh, apart from brightness increase and more Hz I hardly can see any difference in their displays from back then and now

Imo, Apple has reasons and a game plan. From what I understand people who are sensitive to own do have options and this year another option is revealed.

We still need to test it, but hopefully finally i will be able to use auto brightness, true tone and night shift modes without pulsating headaches since getting the 12 Mini in 2020. Really need this toggle on my iPP M4 also.

This has sadly not turned out to be the case for many who are sensitive to OLED / PWM. The new switch is not what it seems.

I'm one of those people and understand your frustration about this. For me, the PWM switch on the 17 series seems to do nothing. I'm glad to see some acknowledgment of the PWM issue in any form, and I hope that means there will someday be a non-PWM option in the new iPhone lineup.

It is quite sad, indeed. Started the thread initially just before iPhone even got into the hands of most users, should have probably waited.

I am currently trying to manage eye strain with my 11 Pro by using it almost always on battery saving mode+night shift at times. You might try similar approach + PWM switcher + maybe changing refresh rate from 120 to 60 or vice versa - 60 to 120 and see if that helps. It doesn’t make much difference but makes device more or less usable

I just went back to the 2022 SE 3rd gen. I like my vision too much to deal with the issues that come with OLED.

iOS 26 adds so much visual mess, I feel less upset that I might have to jump to Android for an LCD (motorola still makes a few even in 2025)
