Everyone keeps saying that Apple should allow downgrading iOS. Do you realize how hard it is to support older data formats with newer software, let alone supporting newer data with older software?

Say I have iOS 6, and all my apps have saved their state. I then upgrade to iOS 7, and run some of the apps, so they re-save their state. iOS 7 saves state differently, providing more information. I now downgrade my OS back to iOS 6. It has no idea how to read this state, so everything is corrupted.

How would that save hassle for Apple?

Less people complaining that their device has been crippled I guess.

Microsoft manage it. As do Google. And BlackBerry. They do not have the issues you've just described.

Microsoft manages what? Sure you can downgrade from windows 7 to vista. Good luck with that, though. Bb10 I don't know the ecosystem, can you downgrade the operating system to any arbitrary release? Android, meh.

Apples support of older hardware is better than bb and Google. If Apple limited operating uogrades, there would be massive complaints on that front. On the whole I'm happy with IOS 7 on my iPhone 4 and IOS 8 on my iPad 2.

I'll spell it out for you. You can downgrade OS on Windows Phone. You can downgrade OS on BBOS. You can downgrade OS on Android. You can't on iOS.

So wait... you pretty much admit a lack of knowledge for other companies ecosystems and their support. And despite this, you still claim Apple has the best older hardware support.

Insanity. The sheer fact that these other companies support older software and allow downgrades proves you wrong. Apple force users onto the latest and greatest and if they don't play ball, they're dropped from support fast and find that services they used yesterday have started to break unless you upgrade.

People will likely complain about something regardless.

Also, I have a WP device. You can downgrade, sure, but you're likely going to lose apps in the process.

Thank you for taking the time to "spell" it out. But your spelling lesson is incomplete. How far back can you go with respect to what o/s version vs what hardware?

Android, how long does the vendor support the operating system past the hardware? Pretty much a year or a little more, then updates stop.

So yes, I claim Apple supports their hardware for a longer period of time than android at least. My last bb pre-bb10 was supported for one year after I bought it.

Blackberry "doesn't have the issue" because you lose all your applications state.

All of my searching about downgrading Windows phone OS all shows that Microsoft doesn't support it, and there's a Nokia program that does it, and again it sounds like all app state is lost.

Again, Apple aims for a better user experience, and doesn't allow you to corrupt or lose your data. The competition also either doesn't allow it, or allows it with caveats, since some installed apps might not even support the older version at all, let alone access their data properly.

So worst case scenario there is that you lose some app data if you downgrade. So even if that's a condition of downgrading, fine, that doesn't somehow make the ability to downgrade all that less meaningful or important to have for many people who would still take advantage of it if they could. It's still a choice that an individual can make if the option is provided.

I can see the value of wiping your device to an older OS version. But that's not "downgrading", as most people expect their applications and data to remain intact.

Losing app data isn't exactly losing everything. And even if basically restoring as new without a backup that could be placed, as an option, it can be a good enough of a downgrade option for many, even if not everyone--still miles better than no option at all.
