Because Apple deals directly with music labels and said music labels would sue the crap out of Apple for storing and serving pirated music.
but lala did the exact same thing and they didn't and couldn't get sued because there is no way to know what is pirated. It would be impossible without some insane IP tracking.

just me or does the icon look very much like mobile me icon? and with mobile me possibly going free? a big apple event next wednessday? seems like very suspicious timing.

It's a photoshop of the MobileMe cloud and the iTunes logo. This is just a mockup for the sake of a headline, it's not actually real… If it were, it would be the new iTunes logo for a start.

Most of my music is very rare and not found on the iTunes Store. It would be great if I could stream it but I seriously doubt that will ever happen.

From a licensing perspective, this could not work for a free service unless the labels allow it. Under 20th Century Fox v. Cablevision, for such a service to go unlicensed and not be deemed a copyright infringement, each end user needs to upload their own content to the cloud and Apple would need to have a copy of each song for each user who uploads it. If all users were streaming the track from one copy, then the labels would need to license the use.

Easy solution, Just store a token for each movie or TV show. The token points to the copy of the data. This way, you call the token the song and everything else is just server side data compression.

The real key is for Apple to spend some of it's money on an all out war to destroy the RIAA/MPAA and the current music labels. It would be a risky move, but in the long run, consumers would get better products for less money, Apple and the people who create content would make more money and democracy might even break out in the Middle East.

Simplify Media worked great for streaming my home iTunes music library to my iphone over WiFi and 3G Unfortunately the company was bought out by Google a year ago and shut down the service last summer. Has any alternative app surfaced since then that works just as well as Simplify? I've tried Orb and wasn't too impressed.

ZumoCast.

My iTunes library is up to 3.52TB's today. Imagine the upload time.:D

And since I get asked this every time, it is not pirated music.

It is a huge pile of HD TV Shows and Movies. And thousands of lossless albums.

I keep 3 backups of my library. Just to be safe.

That's lovely for you. If you read this thread you will have seen that it's generally agreed this service will not be uploading your entire iTunes library bit for bit to Apple's servers, so your few TB's is irrelevant.

And I hope you've got your 3 backups distributed across several locations, otherwise there's no point.

Cloud storage

I used lala in the past. Now I'm using mspot and it works like lala but without the social/discovery features. It allows 2 GB of uploaded music before going premium.

I figure Apple is trying to negotiate the same agreements with the labels that lala had. lala's contracts stated that if they were ever acquired the deals would have to be renegotiated. So Apple has to figure out ways to convince the labels to go along with a cloud storage model, which is an uphill battle. If they can get it done I'll be impressed.

cool idea for 2007 or 2008 but not today

i have an iphone 3G, 3GS, 4 and a HTC Inspire. a year from now there will be an iphone 6 as well. i'm on the cheapo android phone and my wife is on the iphone and i use old iphones as ipods. that's more and more storage every year at home.

i just reinstalled iOS on my 16GB 3G and it's now only music. my old 3GS is only for apps and i'll probably put some videos on it

as i add more old phones at home i see less and less of a need to use the cloud when i have all this flash storage at home. not like you need anything powerful to play music

you sound like a gadget hoarder ;)

most people don't do this so it doesn't make sense.

The cloud is the future just like no discs is the future.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

For those of us who don't pay for our music, does that mean their music won't be allowed to stream? Hope that's not the case

Cloud and thunderbolt...

OS XI.0, XI.1, etc. will probably be named after clouds and weather rather than cats.

Consistent streaming of music is STILL not practical in the AT&T world, with bandwidth limitations and inconsistent 3G service. I want more on board storage instead. I hate this direction!

Tony

in a perfect world we would all have consistent 100mb/s up and download for free, unfortunately reality proves otherwise........ i'll keep my music on my own device/s thank you very much

What I Need

This is exactly what I need. Even though it is cool to hate MobileMe, I love it, that doesn't mean I don't want improvements. Here is my short list of MM wishes...

1. Photo and Music library unlimited storage on iDisk. This will be a great backup, and tool to transfer to another computer. Also, as a traveler a place to access all music, pics, movies, etc. from anywhere, and sync my iOS Device.
2. Keychain with 1Password like functionality. MobileMe is a great place for a service like this, and sync to iOS.
3. Separate Task app. I want this out of iCal and Mail and put into an app for notes and tasks. Mail and iCal can have windows into the data, but not part of the apps. This would also go for MobileMe and iOS, a separate Task app.
4. An RSS reader that syncs. Save feeds to MM and sync to Safari, and iOS. Google reader works great but I want it in my MM interface.

That is what I want, and hope I get. I don't care about social at this point.

As long as I can still have music stored on my phone. Cause there is many times I travel to go see my girlfriend and lose service cause you're in the middle of no where.

Storage is so cheap, it just doesn't seem practical for me to worry about Apple storing my 60GB music library. I wouldn't want to see how long that upload would take. And it won't serve me on a flight, or out in a national park, camping. And data fees to stream to an iPad or iPhone? No thanks. Affordable memory/storage is finally getting ahead of most people's library size. The cloud is great for shared contacts, schedules and many other types of files and data. But to me, it's a forced fit for my music or movie library.

Thats Just Dumb

To me it sounds pretty simple:

Apple knows everything you've ever bought from iTunes.

Every purchase made in the past, as well as all future purchases will now be able to be accessed from anywhere. Music, Movies, TV shows, etc. Apple will not store your personal library in the cloud, they will just use the original files that are already on their servers. If you've bought that song/movie, you'll get access to it.

For those bitching about their music that wasn't bought on iTunes, Apple could care less. The whole point is to provide incentives to buy everything through iTunes...

If all apple let me do is stream my purchases that were made in i tunes i for one would not use this service as 75% of my 8K songs were not purchased on itunes im sure they would use their own catalog to decrease space needed to store songs.. on a seperate note if they dont use this for video then i would be sadd as that is where my drive space is to the limit with over 500GB of purchased video and 1TB of non purchased video(not from itunes)

I do hope this will not be limited to only iTunes bought content. It will be useless to me if it is.
