I agree. I don’t know what Apple is going to do with this 13” Escape MBP. Intel is making fewer CPU SKUs than they did just a generation ago. For example there aren’t any quad core i5s with Iris that are slower than the ones they use in the 13” TB. None! And there probably won’t be any.

Intel is also not making 15w/28w dual core i5s anymore. This makes it hard for Apple to find a suitable CPU to replace the Kaby Lake dual core i5/i7.

The bottom line: We complain about Apple confusing people BUT Intel’s lineup is the real mess here! 7th gen Kaby Lake, 8th gen Kaby Lake Refresh, 8th gen Kaby Lake G, 8th gen Coffee Lake, 9th gen Coffee Lake, Whiskey Lake, Ice Lake, Cannonlake, Amber Lake!

This is madness! They are using the same code name for multiple generations now!

Another reason why Apple should look to put their own A series chips into the Mac. Maybe in the future they will expand their chip line up to include, for example, B Series or C Series etc and separate the Mac line up that way.

I think Apple will just rebrand the MacBook as the 12" MacBook Air, add Touch ID, update the keyboard, speakers and CPU and reduce the SSD to 128GB and drop the price to 999 USD.

The ruined the nomenclature by using M for the motion coprocessor. M would’ve been perfect for Mac SoCs. Using B and C for superior SoCs goes contrary to A being better than B-F.

I think they didn’t realize the potential of these ARM chips a decade ago. I don’t think most of us did either! I certainly didn’t think they would be as powerful as the A12 and A12X today!

Absolutely pathetic article. The question is not why to keep the MacBook on sale.. it is why is there a need for the MacBook Air in 2018? The MacBook is the ultra light laptop, and the base pro is perfect for casual useres. So why is there a neeed for the air? The original MacBook has more air the MacBook Air...

Have you tried to use the MacBook? The screen is so small and the type so small that it is a PITA to use imo.
On top of that the 10 hour battery in the Air is a major plus.

Good article but it's missing the most important thing:

Apple is STILL ashamingly selling the Early 2015 MBA, with a 5TH GEN Intel processor for $999 !!!

A 3.5 year old machine without dropping its price.

That's insulting!

Apple did the same thing with the Mac mini... no price reduction. I think had they dropped the price, it would have hurt the introduction of the new mini at a higher price. The new mini is out of my price range for a desktop computer. I waited for nothing. Starts at $999 in Canada.

As for the Air, I think it was smart of Apple to retain the `Air` name, but they created confusion when they designed the MacBook to have the Air design.

This show is not being run by Steve anymore, and it's clear. He always wanted a clear, obvious product lineup. Apple is confused these days.

The Air should have been introduced with a Liquid Retina (rounded corners) display. That would have made sense to differentiate the lineup. No idea why they excluded that obvious upgrade. Maybe macOS doesn't yet support that feature?

It's probably because of storage. SSDs have become cheaper, but Apple still charges so much more from them. You can get SSDs that are 4 times cheaper than apple chargers. 1TB Samsung SSD: AU$239, Apple upgrade to 1TB SSD for iMac: AU$960. This is not a premium, it's beyond a joke.

Wouldn't that mean a AMD CPU?...I don't see them going away from Intel unless they go to in-house chips./

They're already using AMD dGPU so it's not a stretch to adopt AMD APU or CPU unless Intel are giving theirs away for nearly free.

If they were already struggling to keep the price down then I don't think a relatively costly custom component like that would even have been under consideration. That's the sort of thing that gets introduced on new top end, pricey MacBook pros.

The article doesn't mention some other differences between the Air and 12":

* FaceTime HD (720p) vs. 480p webcam
* Active cooling with a fan (7W chip) vs. passively cooled (4.5W chip)
* Third-generation butterfly keyboard vs. second generation

Compared to the Air, the MacBook Pro Escape has a brighter and more accurate 500 nit DCI-P3 display and Iris Plus graphics with eDRAM, but a second generation keyboard.

I hope the 12" MacBook [Air] gets a refresh next year. Maybe it's waiting for Cannon Lake or Ice Lake (10nm).
Does this mean the air is noisier?

Yes, thanks for pointing out some of the difference that matter to people . . . a different sub-set of people, depending. And let's not forget 2 x TB3 ports vs 1 x USB-C 3.0 Gen1. Nor the relative size/weight differences that do matter to some of us. Also, keep in mind that the 12" Macbook starts with a 256GB SSD.

The three laptops (I am not counting the old Air) are different. I wish Apple could have technical combined them . . . so a Macbook (whatever the name) with the weight of the 12" Macbook, battery of the new Air, 2 x TB3, DCI-P3 13" monitor, starting with 256GB SSD . . . all for say $1200. That would be great. But that is, apparently, not possible.

The marketing/naming is a bit crazy to me but that is not the same as not taking notice of the spec differences.

Finally, those of you who do not see (on paper) a difference between 2.03lbs and 2.75lbs . . . I think over time you would really be able to tell. I can and do. ~2lbs is just great. Great enough that if I have to choose right now, I still choose the 12" Macbook.

I predict the MacBook price will go below the Air at some point. I remember the original MBA being tough to lay cash out for in the beginning.
I concur. Because the MacBook as of rn starts at what? $1000 I think? I wouldn't be surprised if at some point Apple starts it at 9 or even $800.

That sounds like a mess and maybe it is, but honestly I think it'll appeal to a lot of users out there who have some decent amount of work to get done, but just kind of casually dabbles in everything. You could get an 11" iPad Pro and a 12" MB for about 1600 bucks and that would likely satisfy the majority of customers, I think, for everything they'd want to do.

Laptop lineup makes no sense right now with retail pricing.

nTB MBP is $100 more than the MBA but it has a better screen and only weighs .25 lbs more.

$1000 MBA is a joke with that screen and price.

MB should not be $1300. It should be the cheapest model.

It should be.....

MacBook $900

New MacBook Air $1000

nTB MBP $1200

Also iPad Pro's are too expensive and Mac Mini is now $300 to start. Apple pricing is a nightmare recently.

I was just talking with another guy earlier and basically thought it would be pretty cool if they shrink the 12" MB down to the 11" MBA size (reduced bezels) and increase the 13" MBA up to 14" (reduced bezels). They could do the rounded corner thing too. Maybe even the 15" MBP could become 16".

If you've had an 11" Macbook Air and a 12" Macbook together in the same room, you'd know they are almost exactly the same size. For people that loved the 11" Air due to its perfect size (for them), the 12" Macbook was not just a good replacement, but an upgrade since it weighs a little less and the screen is bigger and clearer in the same sized package.

MBA 11:
Dimensions: .11-.68 x 11.8 x 7.56 Avg. Weight: 2.3 lbs (1.06 kg)

Macbook 12:
Dimensions: .14-.52 x 11.04 x 7.74 Avg. Weight: 2.03 lbs (0.92 kg)

Matthew

I'd discontinue the MacBook in its current form, then once it's discontinued, remove the "Air" from the current MBA and just simply name it MBA, then keep the MBP as is. My two cents.

What do you think the A in MBA stands for?

The Macbook Air just needs to go away if they don't permanently sell it for under $800. Even with Apple's upcoming BF sale, the Air will only see a $60 price drop. Why they sell this 3 year old tech for such a high margin is beyond me!
