i just started going into my office two days a week. i started this job during the pandemic and had never spent more than a few minutes with my co-workers. and after a few weeks back now, you know what? i actually enjoy being around other people that I'm not related to.
Which is becoming the taboo sentiment now all of the sudden. Im hearing exactly what you said more and more.

For folks that can't afford to live right next to their office/place of work, commuting is a huge time and money suck. WFH allows folks to take back a larger portion of their day and they don't waste money grabbing Chipotle for lunch and expending (likely expensive) gasoline.
Well Apple’s engineers get paid disgusting amounts of money/stock options. So They can get their butts back in the office and concentrate on fixing the buggiest software theyve released in nearly a decade (iOS 13, 14, 15).

Whilst I understand what you are saying, its still rather depressing to hear.

I really feel for the youth of today who may never hear the hustle and bustle of an office, never have a laugh or joke over a coffee, or never go for lunch with a colleague. It’s just really really sad to me.

All they will know is a person on the end of a Teams or Zoom call. And until they can afford to move out from home they will probably do all that sat in their bedroom for 8 hours a day.

Thats hell in my opinion.
I actually think it's good for the youth to not have their entire social life revolve around work. IMO, it's been an unhealthy obsession by companies to lock people in. What's sad to me is thinking about people being forced to give even more of their time to a daily commute.

True WFH isn't just working at home like during covid, but being free to work a different schedule. People can have lunch with actual friends, work in a nearby coffee shop if they chose or do any number of other things throughout the day with schedule flexibility.

My company is fully remote (and was pre-covid), and I just recently hired a person who had a 1 hour commute each way. Hearing him go on and on about the extra time he now has to spend with his SO, friends and pets, sometimes I feel like I pulled someone out of prison.

To all those talking about “saving money” working from home. Did you also forget you have to buy more of EVERYTHING? Water, electricity, heat, toilet paper, etc etc etc. The money saved on gas is damn near offset by all the other consumables you have to use more of since the company isnt footing those bills.

Exactly, companies simply need to be more open to having the option to work form home a couple days a week. Yahoo tried this experiment of remote work 10 years ago and it failed miserably. The quality of work was less, etc etc. There needs to be a happy medium. Flexibilty is key. But never interacting with people again (as many sadly are totally fine with for the rest of their lives) is not the answer. Plus it totally damages social skills. We all have the jerk co-worker and you need to know how to handle people like that in real life. Not sitting behind a webcam/keyboard. Because one day….sooner than later, people will be forced to come out of their self imposed shells
Just to note that Yahoo is a terrible example. It was completely toxic at the time and already circling the drain. MM was a terrible CEO and did nothing to improve their prospects. She tried to blame WFH, but Yahoo was disaster regardless where the employees were located.

I guess we all have our opinion.

One thing it will definitely do is affect the economy, the number of coffee shops, food outlets, cafes etc going out of business all over the world because they have lost 80% of trade is very sad.
The reality of this type of work, apple especially, is everything is confidential. You can’t talk to anyone about work unless you’re in a closed door meeting or in slack. When you’re in the office, you have to go into a soundproof meeting to take your zoom meetings. That’s also why everyone wears headphones.
There is no conversation in the hallways that’s about work.
You go to lunch, for a walk or whatever, you’re just socializing, and that has nothing to do with going back to work. That’s just being friendly.
I’d love to actually be able to work from home when I’m able to enjoy myself.
For everyone who’s saying we’re not working from home must’ve not cared about Covid. I haven’t seen a movie, hung out with friends or gone on vacation. I’m just sitting at my dining table in front of my computer. It’s not fun.

Driving into SF everyday cost me $22 between bridge toll and parking.
I can’t possibly be spending that much working from home everyday.

Apple has far more employees who aren’t engineers, than who are.

Unless someone worked at a place that provided lunches every day, it is absolutely cheaper when at home.

You sound envious or jealous of people who make a lot of money and work from wherever they want. There are some jobs that are hard to do remotely, but software is not one of them.

And if automakers can launch new products while working from home, why not Apple?
Product security?
I don't know, perhaps if something as big as an automobile can be hidden, it must be impossible to hide the largest Apple computer ever made.
To add insult to injury, I thought Apple is making products to shrink the world and get people connected with one another.

To those who think working from home is slacking off, think again.
We worked way harder with longer hours, with our usual commute time turning into more work hours.
Colleagues would also message one another after hours and I don't mean 6 pm that early.

How much toilet paper are you usng?!? ??

I wonder if Apple Park wasn’t built and there wasn’t all the pressure from the government to let them build it so they would have an influx of business, housing as well as Apple wanting to see the buildings full of people if any of this forcing of employees to come back would be a thing.

This might come as a shock to a lot of the people that flock to these threads, but Apple regularly hires full remote workers even before COVID. I applied for a remote Senior development position about 5 years ago. There are some developers in India.

People just don't understand. I have worked way more hours and been way more productive at home. And our company has managed to remain just as "social" as in-office. Even more so, we don't need to plan around conference room availability and can meet with 30 people without a big mess of a meeting in person (too much idle chatter in large groups during meetings).

This is irresponsible. Anyone who gets infected should sue Apple, and Tim personally.

The BA.2 variant is everywhere, and cases are beginning to rise all over the country. Want to be impotent? Want to have a stroke? How about an amputation? Diabetes? All these can be yours if you're reckless enough to get infected.

How many times do we need to learn this lesson? This is the third or fourth time: there is no returning to in-person work without eliminating COVID first. And this country is too selfish, immature, and lazy to do that.

The mutations will continue, with each one getting more contagious, resulting in an endless wave of viral outbreaks and then lulls, leading the monumentally stupid to once again claim the plague is over.

In truth, there is no stopping it without everyone getting vaccinated, keeping their distance for a few months until this thing burns out, and then permanently sealing the borders. But no one wants to do that, it's too much work. No fun!

Thus, admire your $5B empty corporate paperweight that you wasted shareholder money to build, and get on with the work remotely.

It's kind of funny that they spent the GDP of a small nation on an office building and nobody wants to work in it.

But Jony is a genius, haven't you heard? He designed an open floor plan, hated by all employees, in a building with no child care. Pure genius.

How long before we get another big variant and the entire country flips the "lockdown" switch again.

Forcing me back to work will not make me participate in any local economies. I am still taking COVID very seriously. I am vaccinated, boosted, still wearing masks and gloves everywhere. I am not making the last two years pointless by messing up now. So no, I won't go to restaurants, go to stores, go out to bars or whatever.

Covid may go on in some form or another far into the indefinite future. Maybe for decades. Who knows. People need to stop living in fear and hiding and live their lives again. That includes going to work.

If they can make the case that they are in particular risk, or are around family/friends who are, then that should be considered. But otherwise, get over the extreme fear and get on with your life.
Wanting to work from home as a software developer has nothing to do with fear and everything to do with convenience. Apple will learn the hard way that they should make their employees happy when many great people leave for remote companies like Twitter

It’s an architecturally unique building but geez- having a desk in that giant ring seems like it would be so demoralizing
This sentiment is very strange. If we are comparing people's circumstances in working in offices, these people are practically working in a palace. If it is demoralizing to anyone, it would be the people working in other offices, not those in the giant ring.

Considering theres about a dozen things wrong with your entire post I’ll keep it simple.…Its beyond unfortunate that you’re still that terrified.

I would show up early and work late everyday in this kind of environment. Everything you need on one campus, including an entire gym and scenic walking paths.
