Apple today updated its COVID-19 screening app, which was created to help people stay informed and take the proper steps to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The new version of the app includes updated symptoms and recommended actions that align with the CDC guidelines. The CDC this week added several new symptoms that can be signs of the coronavirus, including chills, shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and new loss of smell or taste.

Apple's updated COVID-19 app also includes tips for wearing a cloth mask to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. The mask section includes tips on creating a mask, how to wear it, where to wear it, and how to sanitize it.

Apple has also updated its accompanying COVID-19 website to provide the same information.

Apple developed the COVID-19 app and website in partnership with the CDC, White House Coronavirus Task Force, and FEMA. Along with the features introduced today, the tools provided by Apple let users answer a series of questions on risk factors, recent exposure, and symptoms to receive CDC recommendations on the next steps that they need to take.

The screening tool is available to anyone who is 18 years or older in the United States. Data provided in the COVID-19 app and on the website is not shared with Apple, the CDC, or other government agencies.

Dreadful that so much poorly thought-out virtue-signalling nonsense is costing more lives than the virus itself. The misleading manipulation of people into senseless hysteria is sickening.

You know, two nearby hospitals in Central Europe have been following different paths. One has been treating patients according to virtue-signalling centralised edicts; the other has been treating on personalised patient needs. The first has a 60 per cent death rate. The second has zero per cent.

Panic, hysteria, poor management, misinformation, virtue signalling, and a total lack of leadership are doing so much avoidable harm.

As for virtue signaling I’m sick and tired of the ads corporations are putting out about how they care for their customers more than anything, are here for us, and we’ll get through this together all the while syrupy music is playing in the background. I want to vomit

Great advice for all the dimwits cowering in their homes, afraid of the world. These people grovel before their masters, waiting to see/hear what they should do next. Zombies.

It’s indeed pathetic.

Well-said. The entire point of closing up was to slow the spread and prevent the healthcare system from being overloaded. Well, that's done, so we should be free to live our lives, right? Nope. Recent data suggests that the virus is far less deadly than previously thought, so that too should be even more incentive to open up. At this rate, herd-immunity is going to take awhile, which will likely result in many unnecessary deaths.

Use ad blockers, Cut the cable subscription, and just get HBO, Netflix, and Spotify alike. Alternatively, you can build your own seedbox server.

You might try learning to not let corporations and their messaging have so much power over you and your life. It's not healthy.

That same stuff just quickly slides off my back. I barely notice it.

Maybe the corporations shouldn’t do anything for fear of insulting the few who don’t want any messages of positivism in their lifes.

COVID-19 could inflict a lot Long lasting damage to the organs. It could send you on a ventilator and if you survive could take a month or more for a full recovery.

I would want to get the flu any day of the week over COVID-19. I don’t want to risk being part of the herd. So I’m going to shelter in place until it is deemed reasonably safe. (In the NYC area)

It's not done. The restrictions are the only thing that keep the case numbers from growing exponentially again and overwhelming the healthcare system. Think about it: nothing has changed from earlier this year when the virus first started cirulating. We have no vaccine, no cure, and are far away from "herd immunity". Why would you think the result would be any different now if all restrictions were lifted?

Where is the source of “far less deadly than previously thought”? The severity of this virus has not changed but people’s tolerance of restrictions around it have. Your post is very muddled.

Because daily pressers with death numbers have brainwashed many people. The media only trumpets it. If they did the same with flu numbers the nutjobs would be wearing facemasks and afraid to leave to their homes.

It only took a virus with over a 99.6% survival rate to shut down the economy and create a depression due to the nutjob response. I haven’t worn a face mask and refuse to.

The facemask isn’t mandatory in most areas, so I’m not sure why you’re telling others in here that you haven’t worn or ‘refuse’ to. And depending on what type of facemask you have, it may not be effective in terms of actually providing any type of filtration.

But where your negligence [And lack of understanding] seems to come in to play, is the facemask is to help you to prevent spread if you were asymptomatic v.s. if You actually contract C/19.

I sure wish I could trust this kind of thing, but history tells us this trend toward tracking apps is not to be trusted.

Whose numbers are you quoting? This virus has killed more Americans in two months than the flu does during an entire year. Even during a bad flu season, and despite restrictions. (Look at cdc.gov numbers). And because the restrictions are working we don’t need them anymore? What kind of ninjalogic is that?
do you really think it is in the interest of any government for people not to be at work? How does this jumbo even get produced in your head? Restrictions will be eased, but it needs to be slow and controlled. Otherwise you will have a Jo-Jo effect of closing and opening consecutively.

How does this relate to an app with useful information in the pandemic?

Can’t wait for the the first ones complaining company xyz wasn’t empathetic enough. Cause that’s exactly what you folks would be upset about instead.

Yeah only more than 200000 people died. Peanuts.

If I find our that the app or an iOS tracking function like it that is used by Apple or any government agency is on my iPhone I will go back to using a land line and abandon Apple products.

Your phone carrier probably can triangulate you’re location for the last two decades. Conveniently they are not concerning to you.

This is a response that shows a disconnect from the reality of the situation.

It is a tricky situation here. You can’t keep the economy shut down much longer. And you want to help people by enforcing isolation. But you can’t really have both without consequences with the other.

What would you do?

Surely you need both life and an economy especially in a capitalist system. However you need to be alive in order to enjoy the economy in the first place so being safe and alive is the basis on which I would likely operate.

More than 60000 deaths in the US and over 200000 worldwide is the scale we’re dealing with right now.

It’s also likely to be safest to go establish phases rather than have everyone go back to the outside work life as if nothing happened.

Agreed. It worked. It's still working. Abandoning it now, when infections and deaths are still running at such high levels would be daft. Too many people equate "It's peaked." with "It's over.".
Well, that's done, so we should be free to live our lives, right? Nope.
Agreed. Nope. It's not "done". 2,000 people a day are still dying in the US. Similar and worse rates in many European countries. We're in a big unknown situation here. Caution rather than wishful thinking should be the basis for future planning. Until widespread testing is available then abandoning social distancing at a time when deaths are (possibly but not definitely) peaking is just putting fuel on the fire.[/QUOTE]
Recent data suggests that the virus is far less deadly than previously thought, so that too should be even more incentive to open up.
Does it? The death rate appears to be around the 1% mark on average (very dramatically higher is some groups, lower in others). That is not significantly different to what was being quoted at the beginning of the outbreak.
At this rate, herd-immunity is going to take awhile, which will likely result in many unnecessary deaths.
I'm not sure I follow the logic here. Putting to one side the fact that we don't know if surviving an infection even grants immunity nor how long that immunity lasts, it requires that the overwhelming majority of the population contracts the disease first (potentially killing around 1% of the population).
Given that, the alternative is to wait until infection rates are much, much lower than they still are; and that testing is much more widely available than it currently is, so that hot spots can be discovered and isolated. At that point, then current restrictions can be slowly lifted and the effects monitored. This process will inevitably take months as restrictions are withdrawn, and will doubtless have to be reapplied in areas where infections rise again.
It the long term, what is required is a vaccine that grants immunity against C19. Bear in mind that no vaccines have been successfully developed for the other five or six coronavirus strains that have been circulating in the population for decades.
