Apple software engineering chief Craig Federighi this week did a series of interviews with YouTubers, sharing iOS 15 highlights and tidbits with them. Each YouTuber was able to ask Federighi targeted questions about the new update using FaceTime.

Andru Edwards talked to Federighi about Apple's focus on togetherness with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey features like SharePlay in FaceTime and Shared with You in Messages. "We have so many ideas that come up over time, over years. And then there comes a moment when we can suddenly connect them all in a meaningful way and they're right for the moment, and we go for it. This year was one of those," said Federighi.

"With so many of us apart having to connect over distance, we were craving that connection and that ability to be together virtually but still share things with one another and to have all that context for connection." Federighi went on to say that Apple likes to work "thematically" without just "dribs and drabs" of unrelated features. "If we can pull something together to be bigger than the sum of its parts, then that's the moment to really go for it, connect all the threads."

TechMeOut asked Federighi which iOS 15 features he's most excited about. "I think if I had to pick right now, it's probably SharePlay," said Federighi. He went on to explain that he hasn't been able to use it with friends and family because Apple had to keep it secret, so he's eager to give it a go.

French YouTuber TheiCollection spoke with Federighi about macOS Monterey and the new Universal Control functionality that will let you use a single keyboard, mouse, or trackpad across multiple Macs and iPad devices. Federighi said Apple is thrilled for the "zero setup" feature that just works. "It was a fun one to put together," he said about Universal Control.

Other videos featuring Federighi in a series of short interviews are embedded below.

iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey are all available to developers at the current time, but Apple plans to release a beta for public beta testers in July, at which point anyone who wants to will be able to test out these new features.

Update: Several other Federighi interviews have now gone live covering VPNs, FaceTime on Android, and more.

I bet none of these youtubers asked hard hitting questions about why iPadOS is severely lacking. Probably heavy restrictions and not actually a freeform conversation.
I don't think Apple is so strict about the questions. Last year MKBHD asked Craig about why there's no Calculator on the iPad.

I also recently watched an interview with Craig again and the woman straight up asked "How's the software for the upcoming AR set going" and he replied (with a grin) "I have no idea what you're talking about"

So this probably shows that they're not aware of the questions they're going to be asked. That's what I think at least.
But of course, they're trying to be more kind and appealing so that they can get this chance again, rather than screwing their interview with a question that Apple refuses to talk about themselves

But as they don't answer them honestly, it makes little difference.

MKBHD is an anomaly. He's prominent to the point where those types of restrictions wouldn't apply to him. His interviews are very on point.

Regardless of whether they really are strict or not though, they should stop ignoring the community's concerns and at least say something like "we take customer feedback very seriously and will make official announcements of any new developments."

They likely don’t share your assessment that iPadOS is severely lacking.

I wasn't familiar with any of them, are they apple related tech youtubers or just some popular youtubers that Apple thought they could get fluff pieces out of by inviting them to talk to someone so important and getting them star struck at the opportunity?

Craig Federighi is an awesome presenter among many other things.
Do people really think so? I always follow these events but I never watch them. For the first time I watched a few clips on YouTube and I felt like I was watching a sales pitch from the evil guy in a sci-fi movie, just before he introduces a housemaid robot that turns into a killing machine.

LOL - I always think he reminds me of a car salesman. I like your train of thought much better.

I get the feeling the marketing people have got their hands on him and ruined the poor lad. No normal human talks like that.

As one of the people who interviewed him, I can tell you that the only restriction was time - we get 5 minutes. There was zero instructions about what not to say, what not to ask, etc. We were free to ask whatever we wanted within that timeframe.

Bit of a shame nobody asked any decent hardhitting questions then.
Again, we get 5 minutes. I've interviewed dozens of tech execs. If you have 5 minutes, that basically means 1 or maybe 2 questions. You don't just ask questions that you won't get answers to just to look cool for the Internet. It's a follow-up to the WWDC keynote, so that is the topic of conversation.

"Hey when is Apple releasing a car?"

"How come you didn't release the M1X MacBook Pro is it because Jon Prosser said it was coming and you wanted him to look bad???"

"Wow that court case with Epic was rough, right?"

Watch some of the best interviewers out there. There is a way you approach 1-min, 5-min interviews vs 15-30 minutes where there is more time to breath (like Kara Swisher's recent interview with Tim Cook.)

It looks like they took a different approach this year and had more-but-shorter interviews.

Apple probably limited the conversation to WWDC as well, so CF wasn't out of his zone talking about non-software topics.

Funny the questions you just made up aren't the real questions everyone is wanting answers to

MacRumors the website may be obsessed about the car, most of us could care less.
Why does iPad OS not deliver the ability to use the hardware released on the iPad Pro which is priced 2x the cost of a fully functioning MacBook Air when equivalently configured?

There is a reason Apple chose the channels they gave interviews to instead of the channels that typically cover Apple to huge audiences and have all been extremely disappointed with iPad OS multiple years in a row.

Can you list a dozen or so on-topic "hardhitting" questions that should have been asked?

Why can't iPad OS use the full amount of memory of my iPad Pro that i bought with an advertised 16GB of RAM?

While the new multi-tasking UI is much easier to use, why are you locked into panels that are hard to switch? For example, a workflow where you are working with one primary app and copying/pasting from two other apps is not at all intuitive even with the new UI

If iOS and iPad OS are built on the same code-base, why did it take a year for iPad OS to get iOS 14 features

Why still no iPad calculator?

Why can't I safely eject an external disk from an iPad, a basic function that has been on a Mac for 40 years

Why is Thunderbolt disk access on the iPad Pro half the speed of the access from a MacBook with the same chip/port on the same disk? Why do some thunderbolt disks not work at all?

They should of asked him why there is no re design, split screen, interactive widgets and why iPad was just catch up from iOS 14
Lol. I think they want to stay in the good graces with Apple. They (YouTubers) want to continue doing these exclusives with Apple.
