At this rate it wouldn't surprise me if iPad Mini doesn't get released this year. :( We'll get a ton of threads wondering if iPad Mini was just an elaborate vaporware invented by media.

What about the 2012 iMac huh!? Look at all the threads about that and your complaining about a stupid iPad! Grow up! There's people in worse situations than you. Some people need an iMac for work to earn money!

I doubt all the products rumored to be released will come out on this side of Xmas. It's simply too much and too good to be true. Like wwdc well probably not see everything that's been rumored

Majority of people? Who told you so? A while ago there was a poll by MacRumors, and the majority of people preferred matte.

And in any case, it is not a health problem. Not At all. I just hate to work with a mirror instead of a screen. I have no headaches because of that, never.

However, the point is to give people the freedom to choose, and not impose anything.

I was concerned about glare when I bought my iMac in 2009, but it hasn't been a problem because of the way it's positioned. However, I can see that a glossy display could cause eyestrain and headaches for some people. In any case, I think Apple will do whatever makes most sense from a business perspective.

Apple shouldn't design for a health problem in a minority of people though. If the mass of buyers want glossy, glossy it is.

I myself prefer glossy.

i prefer glossy too and I work in print lol

I hope it's the 'one more thing'...

Right now is the time to get the iMac out...

----------

Agreed...with the iMac shortage..it's obvious something new is coming...otherwise they could have just done a silent upgrade like they did with the Mac Pro and just put the 'new' tag on it. There is no reason to wait this long on the iMac unless it's getting a redesign.

people claim that the new anti glare screen is giving Apple a lot of grief with the production schedule, however I hope your theory is right!

I'd like to add 802.11AC networking to that wishlist, with new Time Capsules of course. (with initial TB back-ups) :)

I've not kept track of the 802.11 roadmaps lately, but with the workflow I have on a weekly basis, I did rearrange the home network and moved Time Capsule to Ethernet and off the wireless. What does AC version bring to the party?

More bandwidth. But screw 802.11ac, we're already seeing and talking about 802.11ad, 7 Gbps throughput over a tri-band architecture (2.4 ghz, 5 ghz, 60 ghz) with commercial availability around 2014.

Are the current iMac's insufficient for this?

Can they get the job done...sure...but you would be buying 1.5 year old tech at 1.5 year old prices...so you tell me if you would do that with your $$$.

Plus the video GPUs in them have been lapped by Nvidia.

They easily could release on this side of XMas...why wouldn't they...think about it.

iPhone in Sept. iPad Mini in Oct. Two HUGE items that adults want.

Add in the iMac and MBPR-13 for the Pro Market buyers and some normal customers.

Lastly sprinkle in the iPod Touch and iPod Nano as other possible Xmas presents for kids, etc and you have the makings of a blowout quarter.

I would pay serious upcharges for a retina iMac. Probably just pick up a Mini for now if they don't do it.

Apple has sales information and does market research. I tend to believe that if they've gone glossy and push that, coupled with record sales quarter after quarter, they just might be on to something... something that a biased poll in a forum where only the "We want matte!" crowd clicks on and bothers to respond to might not represent...

And in any case, it is not a health problem. Not At all. I just hate to work with a mirror instead of a screen. I have no headaches because of that, never.

Hyperboles don't help your argument. I've had Glossy and matte screens on laptops and desktops. Glossy screens have better, more vibrant colors in general in my opinion and they are not mirrors. Looking at my MBA right now, I don't even see a glimmer of reflection at all, yet it is glossy. Same for the even glossier ACD and uMB I owned. Same for my old Compaq glossy laptop.

Just position it away from the sun or light sources. Even matte doesn't help as you get a big white spot where the light is shining. It might not "reflect images" like glossy, but it's still quite annoying.

I don't really see the difference in either screen type on that point, but with glossy I get better colors IMO (not calibrated colors, just more pleasing) so glossy it is for me.

However, the point is to give people the freedom to choose, and not impose anything.

Freedom to choose requires more SKUs. More SKUs lead to less volume in parts as part and materials differ, which means higher cost per part/material. It makes sense to stream line as much as possible here.

And that's what Tim Cook is good at, optimizing the supply chain. If that results in a cut back of choices, then that's that with Apple.

This guy gets paid for this? I could make up my own schedule in about 30 minutes that would probably be more accurate.

Apple may not want to wait another six months to add the new connector and better IGZO display, which would eliminate one of the two lamps reducing the amount of heat. Then they would have the choice to reduce the battery size to reduce weight & charging time while maintaining the same battery life.

Do you own a 3rd gen iPad because then I would understand your apprehension.

Do you own a 3rd gen iPad? If you did, you would know that the back lighting of the screen is the least of its concerns regarding heat.

That A5X chip has a freaking heatsink on it! The iPad gets hot when the processor starts working hard on something, not from the screen being on. :)

The great thing about this jam-packed launch schedule is that, for once, it may be possible to own one of all the devices without having one or more be behind the tech curve, as happens with typical rollouts (spring, summer, fall, etc). Imagine owning an iPod nano, an iPhone 5, an iPad mini, an 11" MBA, and a 21" iMac - all new, all with the latest operating systems, connections (new dock connector, USB3, Thunderbolt), access to iCloud, etc.

Although the downside for Apple is if lots of people buy one of of everything, then sales might drop a quarter or two later since everyone's desks will be full.

Some how i think whoever thought this up has no idea how Apple works.

they first of all would never mix and ipad and imac presentation together and certainly not separate ipad announcements.

and Nano and iPod Touch likelt be announced together too.

the iPhone is Apple's Bread and Butter and as such will get its solo announcement when Apple so chooses. as for everything else there hasnt been many imac announcement in the last few years and something I think will stay that way. nice and quiet refreshed to keep all us geeks guessing...

This guy loses all credibility when he suggests that Apple will "Launch" the 21.5" and 27" iMacs roughly 6 weeks apart. Assuming a moderate update, there may be form factor, display or other changes that are significant. Apple will not be selling "new" and "old" iMac models side-by-side.

----------

Just said it will be launched but only in small quantities so supply will soon be restricted after pre-orders...

Exactly. He said "launched" not "available". I could believe there might be delayed availability. But the iMac line is unified - both sizes WILL be LAUNCHED simultaneously.

Ambient light management is always a big deal if you use it for anything critical. Given that lighting tends to affect the look of the display, it's important to maintain some amount of consistency there. In terms of eliminating reflections, the main issue is the way it's typically done. The bump coatings are used because they're cheap, although panel manufacturers other than LG have done a better job on tuning. The matte coating doesn't do a lot in terms of limiting refractive index. It does make the surface rougher, so light isn't hitting each point at the same angle. A highly polished surface in this regard tends to be much more mirror like. If I recall correctly, they're using fairly thick cheap glass. Ideally you'd want to increase the transmissive properties rather than blur the reflection across the surface. Note how with the glossy displays if the reflection is bright enough, you'll start to see actual colors. With the matte type it tends to be a somewhat fuzzy but neutral white mass.

I wonder if the "part problems" can be traced to SamSung/Korean components? ;)

This is pretty much trolling at its worst.

I don't really know what's going on. But, hey, I'm an analyst and we are paid to make stuff up based on "people familiar with the matter" sources.

Sometimes I read the full notes of the analyst if available. Some of them offer complex reasoning for their predictions based on past decisions and whether they feel Apple needs to prop up their numbers to maintain a similar growth percentage when compared to the same quarter of the prior year.

Given that the "New iPad" was a compromise device with heat & thickness issues, giving it a 7 month lifespan would be less surprising than normal. They may use this opportunity to make sure their big mass consumer products launch just before the holidays, rather than just after them.

I find it extremely unlikely they'd make an iMac sandwich though. They'll either let the new 21" sit in China or launch the 27" with limited supply.

It's a compromise in your opinion. Look at the rest of their portable machines Apple does not care if it feels hot to you. This has come up with the macbook pro, air, mini, and imac for years due to the anorexia nervosa school of design:p. As to the thickness, a return to the prior density may be a feature next year. It's extremely unlikely that they would displace the design this early..

I was in for an iMac would it have been released in the usual time frame. Now I would just wait for Haswell. I hope Apple will also wait. They could make 2013 the year of the Mac...

Haswell is roughly a year away. You'd know that if you searched on it. There isn't a way to just bring out a January or February 2013 imac, so you can definitely expect to see one in the near future. I don't see Apple unnecessarily moving a very healthy product line to a two year refresh cycle when current options offer improvements.

new Imac

I m curious as to what is taking so long. With no update Apple has ALREADY lost the back to school sale season.Public schools where i live start on Sept 6 th and colleges started on Aug 27.Maybe they are hoping to hit the Christmas season?? It may be too little, too late. I am ALREADY seeing decorations popping up in the stores.

Well, production costs would come down if every iPad only got one lamp. As for the A5X, you just listed another reason Apple may want to upgrade the iPad earlier than expected. Again, I won't believe it until I see it, but it doesn't make sense to discard the possibility all together just because it didn't happen before. Anyway, I won't get my first iPad until I can get one with the new connector. By the way, people not buying an iPad because it has the old connector may also be something Apple is thinking about.
