They specifically said in the keynote that you will be able to track AirPods and make them chime even while they are in the case. They will also be traceable in Find My in a similar way airtags are tracked when you are nearby (maybe with an on screen arrow point you to them). I remember this only being mentioned about AirPods Pro tho.

Apple is on fire 🔥!
Software power I wouldn’t ever be in another system than iOS this is seriously good, I come from an apple iPod color 20go and never looked back

Even with the case closed?
We speculate there is no Bluetooth capability in the case, I think iFixit would have pointed it out if it had.

Up until now we had to open the case to make anything turn on (as far as we know) so I'm wondering if a future update os going to make the AirPods themselves periodically wake and send a beacon message whilst inside the case. With limited knowledge of the implementation this is the first thing that comes to mind.

Unless they are just going to offer a smart case to buy as an option like they did with AP1 and the Wireless Charging case.

This is the thing I want to know. Somehow, both me and the girlfriend never lose our actual individual AirPods- we lose the entire darn case with AirPods inside.
I always thought this. Who loses an individual one really?

If they’re out of the case they’re in your ears? Am I using them wrong?

Even with the case closed?
I highly doubt it as they seem to go "offline" entirely if the AirPods are in the charging case and the charging case is closed.

I feel like Apple could, theoretically, make it enable Bluetooth at small intervals to send out a signal. This would be the most help as I don't see too many APP owners losing the case or the case with one AirPod in it, but much more frequently the entire trio with both AirPods sitting in the case.

I honestly can't think of a single time that I've just forgotten the charging case by itself somewhere as using the AirPods always leads me to think about where they are and where the charging case is, if I have it on me or sitting on a table or whatever.

Enabling some kind of signal to be sent from them at certain intervals would also allow me to know the charging status without having to located and open the lid. I never understoond why checking battery levels is as "manual" as it is for AirPods as everything Apple is trying to be as digital and button-less as possible.

If extra battery drain is what is holding Apple back from "always on" AirPods Pro then I pray they at least could let us enabled it.

Yes, you are right. Thank God, that's awesome.

The new "notify when separated" feature also seems like it would be essentially redundant if it required the case to be open or the AirPods to be out of the case for it to work.

So with the new features, APP communicate with the users iPhone and the FindMy network regardless of open or closed charging case.

Case closed(for good), I guess! 😁

Now all I could ask for is for AirPods to be locked to my Apple ID. But I guess that's for a future model with Touch ID in them or something like that.

But not lessor AirPod models. No worries, printed a sticker on the case with my name and phone number that people can text if they find mine. ;)
Haha, I honest to god didn’t think about this during all these AirTags and now FindMy of things wave of articles for lost and found things… an old school pen and paper sticker or a sort of dog-tag could go a very long way too.
