Parents, do your kids a mental health favor and just buy them a Casio G-Shock or something along those lines

Fun, durable, amazing battery life, loads of options of the look and feel ... doesn't try to rope you into "apps" and get you hooked on iOS crack as young as possible
Or if you want to know where your kids are, chip them. My rabbit has been chipped too. It’s cheaper, safer and you don’t get robbed.

Assuming the Apple Watch for kids won’t come for $ 29,99 😂🤣😂

Remember when the white MacBook was like Apple's method of getting people into the ecosystem without a huge price barrier?

If they play the long game and get these on kids wrists, they will potentially turn into longterm Apple customers. If you get greedy up front, you'll lose people.

This is smart. I don't know about elementary school ages, but middle school aged kids start needing to communicate because of after school activities and needing pickups, etc. i've also chaparoned field trips where there are text based check-ins and the kid had a cellular based apple watch.

Cheaper than an iPhone SE and a data plan in both up-front and recurring charges.

They see the writing on the wall, as more schools rightfully start banning phones. I think a watch is just about the right level of connectivity. Can do a call if needed, can text on some level, can share location, can't do social media at all, and no camera.

If Apple wants to promote this for kids, they need to make it a lot cheaper with a smaller display. Maybe the new plastic model will be geared towards kids?

It also needs to have a rugged display with a lip around it so it won't break so easily. I've been seriously considering getting something like this for my daughter. I don't think a 5th grader needs an iPhone, even though she says so many of her friends have one. But as she moves into middle school and gets involved in more extra-curricular activities, having a barebones cellular watch that can do basic tasks like encouraging healthy behaviors and allowing her to stay in contact with us and see her location would be great.
I did this for my kids when they hit 5th grade. No need for a phone but could get in touch if necessary. I just bought used series 7 in the 41mm size. It’s worked great for both.

but school time can be bypassed by kids so teachers aren't allowing it at least at our kids school.
Yup. We're banning smart watches just like cell phones during school hours. What's worse is that Apple Watch very much acts like a gateway drug for texting with younger kids. Parents think they're "better" than getting smartphones, but the watches prime younger kids for the endorphin rush of getting a notification.

I have been considering one of these for my 8 year old, partly as a delay to getting him a phone, but also to track his bike rides/runs - he is pretty sporty. So it is good to hear from other parents that this works. Ideally I would use it as an excuse to upgrade my Watch, but I have the larger, non cellular version.

It seems like the dedicated kids watches from Garmin etc can’t log activities etc.
Do it. I bought both my 11 and 9 year old apple watches when they each turned 8 years old. Don't regret it one bit. Being able to communicate with them over text helps you see a different side of their personality. I also control their contacts, apps, and being able to contact them whenever I want and see their location and also get pinged if they leave a spot has been helpful. Its also helped them be more responsible since they use it for alarms, reminders, and they've learned a lot just asking siri questions.

If you buy one, spend the extra and get a series 9 since the battery life is way better than the 8 and older (new chip, bigger battery). I just upgraded my 11yr old boys from his original SE that came with cellular. They also have a typing keyboard which is helpful. My 9yr old has an SE 2 which shes had for close to 2 years.

Way less expensive than a phone and they aren't on them all the time like with a phone or tablet. Cellular costs $10 a month and Applecare is cheaper.

Yep. Broke the screens on my first two Apple Watches due to accidentally dropping them on hard surfaces (gym floor and a bedroom floor in Europe). The concave glass is cool but a huge risk, which is why I now have an ultra, which I've dropped way more with more consequences for the surface it hits than the watch itself.

Parents should look into the $69 smart watch I saw here not to long ago!
Isn’t there laws against marketing to children?
Absolutely not.

Are toy commercials marketed towards Adults or Children?

Certain things, like alcohol and cigarettes, can't be marketed towards children. But most everything else can.

In middle school they can use public transport systems; by the way, in many cities they are free for kids and teens!

My 11 and 9 year old have Apple watches and it’s been amazing. They have to request apps if they want to download something and I always know where they are and can call and text them. Applecare is cheap for them and they can use calculator, stop watch, set reminders for themselves. It’s been fantastic and I'm going to avoid giving them phones for as long as possible.
Have you run into the issue where the watch won’t download a free watch app even though the password was correctly entered on the watch? We go into an endless loop of being prompted to enter the password in settings before getting the app. And then it fails for no reason.

I don't hate this.

If you want your child to be able to call you for safety reasons, it's better for them to have an Apple Watch than a full phone.

Now, I don't think these safety concerns are always legitimate. For example, if your child is at school, you should trust the school. You can always call the school in an emergency.

But, if you want to e.g. let your child take walks by themselves— which I think is good and healthy—it makes sense to give them a way to call you.

Thanks. I’m currently “only” on a Watch 7, definitely not getting him a better one that me. My usual tactic is to get him a cheap one and see how he gets on with it/make sure he doesn’t trash it.

When I was a child, the most expensive gift I received was my bicycle.

What the heck is wrong with this generation?!?!

I am also a father of a 7 year old child and I would never in a million years consider an Apple Watch for him. Apple are completely detached from the realities of life and how children treat their items.

This is utterly absurd, but some poor fool will fall for this.
