Subscribers should be wary that an increasing volume of Apple-related phishing emails are circulating. These phishing scams attempt to steal your personal information, Apple account details and financial credentials.

Many variations are in circulation, but current examples include links to fake Apple websites which try to trick you into entering your Apple ID or password information. These sites can look convincing, and may link back to legitimate Apple websites. Accessing these sites could also enable malware to be installed on your computer.

An example of a recent Apple phishing email is provided below:

In this example, the sender’s email address includes “apple.com”, but this is not an official Apple address. The “Verify Now” link also takes you to a non-Apple website address. It’s important to realise, however, that it’s possible for both of these details to be masked or hidden in more sophisticated phishing emails.

The most effective protection against any phishing attempt is your own suspicion. A business such as Apple will not ask for your personal or financial details in an email.

Apple users also have the option of activating two-factor authentication for their Apple account.

Avoiding phishing emails

Do not click links or open attachments unless you are confident about the sender and the information the email contains. The best advice is to simply delete the email.

If you are uncertain about the origin of any email you can always cross check the information by going independently to the company or source’s website or by calling them directly.

The developer portal was hacked. If you want to know what happened, I posted an article on my blog site.
A guy posted a Youtube video showing names and email addresses of members of the developer portal..
Apple also sent me an email that the portal was taken down because it was hacked...

Did folks know that the Ubuntu forums were also hacked and taken off line ?
I had this email today. Planned campaign of attacks ?

"Hello,

You are receiving this message because you have an account registered with this address on ubuntuforums.org.

The Ubuntu forums software was compromised by an external attacker. As a result, the attacker has gained access to read your username, email address and an encrypted copy of your password from the forum database.

If you have used this password and email address to authenticate at any other website, you are urged to reset the password on those accounts immediately as the attacker may be able to use the compromised personal information to access these other accounts. It is important to have a distinct password for different accounts.

The ubuntuforums.org website is currently offline and we are working to restore this service. Please take the time to change your ubuntuforums.org account password when service is restored.

We apologize for any inconvenience to the Ubuntu community, thank you for your understanding.

The Canonical Sysadmins."

Or, in real life it takes time to see what exactly has been done. Ubuntu forums are not even remotely as complex as Apple's developer forums.

Its not like the movies where someone knows instantly what a hacker had access to.

Apple may go after this guy.

I think they will, yes.

The usual protocol is to notify a company that you are attempting to breach their security measures *before* doing so, and even then only if you have obtained permission, providing them with all the information needed to watch everything you do. And all this is usually arranged ahead of time by companies specializing in computer and network security, not solitary individuals.

Even assuming this person's intentions really aren't malicious, there is still the issue of others being able to track his activities to discover the vulnerabilities for themselves. Sometimes hackers and crackers are not immune to being compromised by others who are more skilled.

It should be back soon. I can now reach the log in screen, without getting the notice that the site is down. Finishing login takes forever, though.

Seriously??? Or is this a sick, sick joke?

I still get "We'll be back soon ..." message.

Just to be clear, I cannot log in yet, but I got further than before. Thought I'd just mention it. Nothing more, nothing less. Read into it whatever you want.

What?

I got an e-mail from Apple telling about the issue (same statement as on the website) when I woke up this morning (14 hours ago).

Definitely still down. I'm no sure why people are saying its up.

EDIT: I think people are confusing developer.apple.com with the dev portal. The site everyone is talking about is when you click "Member center" in the upper right after going to developer.apple.com.

Just got this mail;

Apple Developer Website Update

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

I've got to admit that I question why some of us did not get the email until late today. Just when I was about to chalk it up to chaos, mine arrived. Why it took Apple till 6:39 PM PST today is not exactly confidence inspiring. Yet as infallible as they think they are it's possible they're still in shock.

Wonder how long this will drag on.

I knew about this in the morning  how come its news just now here ? The guy even identify himself and said he reported all bugs to apple in different reports.

The name is: "Ibrahim Balic" ; independent research it seems.

At first he said it he meant no harm but now it seems hes sold the info.

Its not news here. It's been discussed since late last week when the outage started.

there have been a few threads around it just as there have been a few news stories about it. This particular thread started all the way late last week when nothing was known which is why there was a fair bit amount of speculation before any information came out of Apple or anywhere else.

Just a bit shy of 2 hours until the website has been down for 5 days.

I'm wondering how serious an impact this is going to have on everything Apple. IE, how many great apps won't be made, or will see delayed releases? How much of iOS 7 / Maverick will be delayed and/or unfinished on account of this?

I doubt the website people are the same group responsible for working on the operating systems.
