The first revision of this post was wrong - so here's the edit.

The 8800GT was probably discontinued as not only are the 65nm chips for the 8800GT are no longer mad, but because the 3870 for the mac performs better then the 8800GT in application that the group of people who buy MacPros care about (methinks.). It could also be that Apple finally just ran out of 8800GTs to pander.

Actually with the latest (Nehalem-included) drivers , the 8800GT is top dog in Core Image tests.

It might also be linked to the fact that with numerous versions of the ROM out there, many people with a bit of knowledge had figured out how to flash PC versions of this and later cards. The 285 had better be on its way, otherwise Pro users would only have the low end 120 for CUDA work under OS X.

CUDA is irrelevant on Snow Leopard. It will only act as a shiny layer on top of OpenCL.

OpenCL will "win" because it is cross-platform and not hardware specific as opposed to CUDA.

I think that boils down to the fact that it is the fastest graphic card available to the Power Mac.

Nope, it's the Intel version for the 2006 Mac Pro. No PPC version on the store.

Unless it works on both, but it says "requires 2006 Mac Pro".

True, and the store doesn't sell the ATi 3870. I don't think the introduction of the GTX285 justifies this, since it will not be in the same price range as the 8800GT, and likely incompatible with rev1 Mac Pros.
Since the X1900XT is still sold (and was also flashed), this could mean that the 8800GT was highly successful and they have run out of stock since Nvidia does not produces these ships anymore.
And some people in France were told that the 8800 were not available.

Still, they should provide a replacement, especially for 2006 Mac Pros.

The faster Radeon HD 4870 works.

the australia store has the 8800 GT for the '06 Pro, but not the '08 one
(this is about a week after i ordered mine... )

the 8800GT is not a bad GPU, it can still play crysis on high ;)

*GPU

Anyways, I am not surprised, the thing is getting long in the tooth and soon to be 4 series out of date with the GT300s coming.

We can't rule out the possibility of an ATI driver bump, though. Also, CPU constraints would be different in benchmarking on those machines. At any rate, I'm sure Barefeats will reveal all soon enough. Once 10.5.7 lands, anyway. Of course, all bets are off for snow leopard as well.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT discontinued

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro is also discontinued

I wish I knew where I could find these new drivers! … (if there are any for the 8800GT that is…) ;)

But seriously, doesn't anyone know what drivers are coming in 10.6, or 10.5.7?

One sec, I'll go poking around in the nehalem render box, it's not doing anything right now… ;)

God morgen,
Good question. Unfortunately the only one we are fairly certain of is the HD 4870 driver.
Hehe! :D God dag til deg! ;)

Hmm… wonder if the Nvidia 285 will have similarly bad driver support? … Maybe I should buy the 4870 instead?

OK, who wants to play guinea pig with the nVidia drivers from a Nehalem machine?

MEEEE!!! :p …*Nah, I'll wait and see what 10.5.7 will bring. Should be here in a few "days", right?
