Hmm… wonder if the Nvidia 285 will have similarly bad driver support? … Maybe I should buy the 4870 instead?![]()
That is exactly what I am afraid of.
For that reason my first preference would be for the HD 4890 followed by the 4870 1GB card.

Yea, but the 4890 won't be available for the Mac will it?That is exactly what I am afraid of.

Hihihih eh why am I laughing again?Probably not, I can only hope.
I suppose that when the HD 5870 is released for PCs, we will get the HD 4890![]()
So, would that make the 4870 512MB card your third (and thus far only available) choice? That is exactly what I am afraid of.

No, it would go like this:
1. HD 4890
2. GTX 285
3. HD 4870 1GB
4. HD 4870 512GB
I need the extra vram for a game that I play.
If it wasn't for that game (X-Plane), the 4870 512MB card would work just fine.
As a last resort, my understanding is that a PC 4870 1GB card can be flashed with the rom of the HD 4870 512MB Mac card.
Remember you do not have to flash the Radeon HD 4890 to make it work in Mac OSX. I got mine dirt cheap compared to the Geforce GTX 285.
Are you saying that I can buy a standard HD4890 and it will work in my MacPro under OS X?

If you use ATY_init, that is exactly what I am implying
But you will need another Mac compatible graphic card to initialize EFI or else it will not boot into Mac OSX.
In my case I have a Radeon HD 2600XT (for EFI) as well as a Radeon HD 4890 installed.
This is really bad.
2 weeks ago my 8800GT stopped working for no good reason.
I still had 3 weeks warranty so I felt lucky and sent it to the shop for a fix or replacement.
Now the guy has been playing hard to get or something. I still havnt got it back.
Im starting to understand why now. He doesnt have one to send me.
I have the 1st gen Mac Pro. What am I supposed to do now?
Or.
What is the shop supposed to do?
THe card was clearly still under warranty so they need to do something....
Grr.
Service parts are different, you'll still be able to get 'em through there. Hell, you can order an iSight right now if you're willing to shell out for it.
Euw. Dont want that to happen. It would mean that they need to send the card some were else to repair it and that might take freaqin years.
Apple does whole-module exchanges. If your card is under warranty and it fails, they order a whole unit replacement from the service depot and the entire card is replaced. It's not worth the labour for them to repair cards, displays, etc etc.
Hardmac.com had an unflashed 4890 working on a Mac Pro without the use of any other graphic cards. They just used ATY_init.If you use ATY_init, that is exactly what I am implying
