well, here's the kicker. you can only repair what you have. so even if the ssd is removable, you can place an order only for the same capacity one. unless you have access to someone else's serial number who happens to have a 2TB mini.
this is truly madness. apple still has its profits through this program, then why the hell they don't allow the poor man to choose from the compatible SSDs?

I just tried and it allowed me to add a 2TB SSD to my cart even though my M4 mini has a 1TB SSD.

$880. And since I don't have a 2TB SSD to return I wouldn't get any back.

I looked on AliExpress after seeing the comment above. I hadn't realized there were any third-party SSDs available. I might try one later.

Not as bad as I was expecting!

Still 5x what I paid … grab one of Ali
They are fantastic … even shows up as an Apple SSD in SysInfo

The issue is often that people try to compare parts that are actually different.

As an example, people are always stating the RAM prices are cheap. I also think Apple's RAM upgrade cost is very high but, you can't compare the prices of RAM modules to the unified RAM memory in M chips.
It's not different RAM? The only change is it's unified by virtue of its juxtaposition to the chip and soldered and just means the CPU and the GPU use the same memory.

It's a fallacy that the RAM chip itself is somewhat unique. It isn't.

I'm guilty of that. Apple refused to change the inoperable battery in my 2017 MacBook Pro and I couldn't find any 3rd party that would do it.

I decided to replace it myself and ended up destroying one of the two speakers (connector) and the replacement battery. I was however able to get the badly swollen battery out of the MacBook Peo and the MacBook Pro will still run off of the adapter.

Ah I hate it when repairers do that stuff. Bunch of *******. Good on you for doing it either way.

The chips aren’t unique but the proximity to the SoC is. Mostly because the longer the distance the more signal integrity issues you get between the controller and the DRAM. You can go faster if it’s closer.

Good to see this. But the cost for the SSD storage is very high. Also not many will be self repairing their Macs. But very nice to see the detailed manual/procedure to do so.

Agree as basically that is what the unified means, with RAM available to both GPU and CPU.

So in the EU Store, you can order different SSD than the one your mac came in with, but presumably you wont get the discount...

Also fun fact (maybe error), the prices of the replacement motherboards are only dependent on RAM amount... so 12c16g 64GB costs the same as 14c20g 64GB...

Prices are prohibitive... Even after the discounts for sending parts back, it would cost more to build the computer yourself from spare parts than to buy a new one. 🤑
