Terrible movie. Couldn’t stomach the first 20 minutes and stopped watching. As a huge F1 fan and go to several races a year, it was just too unrealistic. Sadly, that is the future of the sport it seems. It will probaly win, that’s the way awards are these days.
With all due respect, you sound completely tuned out to popular culture and awards. Name one truly great award-winning movie that has ever been realistic. Now name one truly entertaining popcorn movie like F1 that won an Academy Award. If you couldn't suspend your disbelief enough to enjoy F1, you must've hated Star Wars.

It was as realistic as Star Wars. But if you’re saying the F1 movie was pure science fiction… I’ll buy that. LOL

I thought it was a good popcorn movie, but never thought it'd be up for any awards or anything (beyond technical ones, I guess).

Enjoyable movie and happy to see mainstream movies getting attention, but best picture? Was it really that bad of a year for movies...maybe it was lol.

If you’re watching at home it can depend a lot on your sound setup. 6-channel Dolby (for example) soundtracks that are downmixed to stereo or whatever sometimes come out very badly with dialogue being drowned out.

Apple TV does have “enhance dialogue” and “voice isolation” audio options in the system settings which can be very helpful. Have you tried those?
Yes, I do use those at home.

What I mean is - sound can be really iffy when going to the theater too; I do not go very often but many times it can quite disappointing.

In my book it was meh, but then there are plenty movies that won the Oscar that are meh imho... whatever, I sure am glad I did not pay to see it in theaters ...
I went in with no expectations. I came out disappointed. I felt like the plot and the characters were not very original. I actually laughed out loud when someone in the film described Pitt’s character as a maverick or rebel or doesn’t play by the rules. Something to that effect. Don’t many movies have that guy? Not trying to be negative or pick it apart. I’m surprised it’s up for Best Picture. 🤷🏻‍♂️

agreed. I had read so much about the movie here on MR that I did have some "expectations", not sure exactly what but I did fast forward watching it as the are scenes repeated themselves over and over. Having seen a few F1 races in person way back when and nowadays loosely following, well, enough said as my mom told me "if you don't have anything nice to say ..."

Realistic movies that won the best picture oscar: Kramer vs Kramer, Rocky, Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy, Gandhi, The Kings Speech.

Popcorn movies that won the best picture oscar: LOTR Return of the King, Chicago, Forrest Gump, Gladiator.

Not that I think F1 should win best picture (best sound or cinematography, sure), but if a movie like Emilia Perez can get a nomination, then F1 definitely deserves one too.

I laughed so hard at the end of the movie. "With all your previous medical conditions, one more crash and you could die or be paralyzed." And then he goes to Mexico to drive in the Baja 1000.

As someone who raced part of the Baja 500 in the Supercar class that they showed him in, every single jump you take is like a crash. He'd be dead/paralyzed within the first two miles of the race.

I watched the first ten minutes and quit because the dialogue was patronizing, stilted, predictable, pedestrian and not like deserving films like Hamnet or Train Dreams. I'm sure the racing sequences were fun but the rest that I saw was brutal.

This was one of the few movies where sound was mixed in a way that even though there is racing and all the noises, I could actually understand what people were saying (both in the theater and at home as I watched it in both places).

I know sound is not really sexy but IMO, there are many movies where sound mixing is actual crap.
I agree, the sound has got worse on movies and TV. Mumbling is another part of the issue, which I found to a big problem on Masters of the Air (an Apple TV series), as an example. Not speaking clearly, and sound mixing that puts effects over voices, combine to make speech difficult or even impossible to follow.

Apple did probably give a big check for this.
This movie is just a very long and boring commercial and it could have been filmed with a GoPro.
It does not deserve any Oscar.

I agree with you guys, and my feeling is everything is over processed since the introduction of Atmos and other "spatial" formats. It was supposed to make everything sound "natural" but the result is the opposite IMO. I always need to "enhance" dialogs and reduce surround effects.
I recently purchased a pair of "audiophile" quality floor standing speakers and an integrated amplifier; I totally rediscovered the pleasure of listening to music. I would like movies to sound as good.

"F1" was a nice summer popcorn flick. Deserves the IMAX preso. I enjoyed it. Oscar-worthy? The story is basically a rehash of Top Gun Maverick or any number of sports films. Maybe it's time to bring Best Picture nominee list back down from 10 to 5, especially since fewer feature films are being released these days.

I don’t think it was a Braveheart or Terminator 2, but considering what kind of movies have been coming out in the last 5-10 years, F1 was definitely among the best of them. Solid movie and the action made you feel like you were in on it.
You must’ve watched 5-10 then overall.
