Apple's iconic Fifth Avenue store in New York City is normally open 24/7, but it will be closed overnight on some days next week.

According to Apple's website, the store will be closing at 10 p.m. local time each night on Monday, February 2 through Wednesday, February 4. The store will re-open each morning at 8 a.m. local time during this period.

Apple is closing the store to complete maintenance on the signature glass cube entrance, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Apple's explanation internally is "preservation work."

Opened in 2006, Apple Fifth Avenue features a street-level glass cube entrance, leading to an underground store. Apple's CEO Tim Cook and other company executives often attend the store for major new product launches.

The store's cube has been outfitted with everything from a giant Apple Vision Pro headset outline to colorful Siri glow in recent years.

Was it 24 hours?? wth
I never knew.
There is not much going on in NYC after 10pm, despite the fame of "city that never sleeps". Many other cities across the US and the world are much livelier than NYC after 10pm.
It really surprises me that someone would go to Apple Store at midnight.

… long ago as a ratbag youth I think I remember calling and saying I was stuck on the roof and the guy bought it for a hot minute…

“Yeah, I’m stuck on the roof.”

“……… of the Cube?!?!?!? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.”

Probably making those glass panels more seamless? Over the time since it's been constructed the number of panels have become less and less. I believe the original vision was to have no seams at all.

For the few years after it opened, I feel like it was just packed all the time and was a “cool place to visit” but as shopping habits changed and more & more online buying became the norm I think most of the stores are less of a draw.

Not likely - the article states Apple is conducting maintenance related to preservation work. Replacing the panels would require a temporary closure and moving the store to a nearby temporary location for at least several weeks or for months like Apple did in the past.

On the surface, it’s totally believable. It’s been there for a while. I didn’t know they were open 24 hours anyway… just in some crackhead needs AppleCare at 1:00 AM I guess. Midnight… yeah I can see that. Theatre district doesn’t shut down until midnight/1AM.
Edit: I revise my statement. I thought it was in the old FAO Schwartz location.. not stand alone. I can definitely see it.

Guess there won't be any new product launches that week.

I always visit Apple stores when traveling overseas. Fun to see what they've done with historic buildings.
Yeah, I agree. I walked by the SFO store on the way to the convention center about 15 years ago. I hate the mall stores. But I don’t get uptown much.. at least that far uptown to notice the Apple Store.

I worked there from 2007 to 2011. Because of the store being 24/7, when we had an "all staff" meeting, they would have two meetings with half the staff at each one. There was a lot of stuff that had to be considered. Like 3 types of shifts. Daytime (anywhere from 7am to 10pm), Twilight (3pm to midnight), and Overnight (10pm-8am). Overnighters worked 4 days a week.

It used to be the city that never slept until the pandemic. Things changed. I lived in manhattan for many years and wondered around all hours for various reasons.

Everything you’ve said here false. The city definitely sleeps a bit more after the pandemic, but still the most late city in the US. there’s always people at the Apple Store at various times at night. It’s the best time to go.

Title change suggestion. Instead of:
Apple's Fifth Avenue Store is Closing Overnight Next Week, Here's Why

How about:
Apple's Fifth Avenue Store is Closing Overnight Next Week for Maintenance

It’s hardly longer and less clickbait-y!

I'm guessing it's so they can check and repair anything that may have been damaged after the recent winter storm, which is a good thing to check.

Have you been? I went in late September a week or two after the iPhone 17 launch event and it was packed, even at 2 AM.

My last visit to NYC was 2017 for a wedding. While I always want to go back for a visit, I just couldn't find a reason to be there. Still haven't seen it after the last remodel.

That Apple Store looks nothing like the picture anymore, it’s a butt ugly gaudy mess of neon spray paint, construction girders everywhere & a wide platform above it all. It’s tacky & run down. It was a wasted trip to go see it this past year when we were in NYC. It used to be an architectural gem, now it’s just 🤮.o

No. Here’s really why:
Based on the overwhelming negative reaction to the OS 26 VI, Apple will change the transparency of the glass cube from clear to tinted.
