It will meet the same fate as AVP for this price point. Anything above $2000 going to be impossible in the customer market. Most importantly, already foldable are sold for almost $1200-$1400 onwards in most of the places with the top of the line specs (except for the camera module) even with IP68. This is going to decorate the shelves of the Apple Store and collecting dust.

Vision Pro isn’t Even the same. That’s 3500 which goes on your head this is a brand new iPhone category!! This will likely sell out no doubt about it

With mobile carriers selling it people will justify the cost for a 2 in 1 device

They're just stupid and pointless and I'm sick of hearing about them. It's this generation's 3D tv. Gimmicky garbage that won't ever last.

They aren’t stupid or gimmick.

They basically make the phone experience feel superior to a slab phone which is why there’s a bigger cost.

Only downsides is worse cameras but seeing as iPhones cameras are always underwhelming moving to a foldable is hardly a deal breaker if you prefer iOS

Those dimensions still seem funky. Did some quick math and the results I got look weird. Assuming a book style fold and ignoring bezels. A closed diagonal of 5.5”, an open diagonal of 7.8”. The open height is the same as the closed height. And the open width is twice (2x) the closed width and a rectangle display.

The math says the closed display is about 3.2”x4.4” (w x h) and the open display is about 6.4”x4.4”.

They are likely aiming for the find N3 foldable or pixel fold 1 so it’s a better aspect ratio for content

As most normal foldables are very square

I've never got this form factor. The fold would irritate me no end, and the main reason I might want it would be to make video bigger. As they are close to square though, half the screen would be black bars. Oh, one other use case for me. I don't like photo editing with Lightroom on the phone. If it opened up to the iPad view that would be nice. Not $2k nice though and the fold would still bother me. Better to have 2 devices that cost less than this one combined.

That’s correct on most foldables but the aspect ratio for this based on leaks will be wider outer display allowing for better viewing content like it is on iPad mini

Yea, if it has an iPad mini size screen and another screen and the folding hardware and bigger battery etc., there is NO WAY for it to be the size and weight of a Pro Max. Simply not possible.
It’s already been done, so yes, it is possible.

I mean are we getting functioning multi tasking? Support for some sort of Pencil? Additional innovative accessories or software features, for example to enable a proper typing experience? A screen ratio that is useful for video? iPad M series chipsets? Same latest gen iPhone cameras? This needs to replace any other iPhone or iPad to warrant such a price. Otherwise it will just seem like another first gen experiment.
Based on the screen sizes in the article, it sounds like this iPhone will be perfect for video watching similar to the original Pixel Fold which also had a short, but wide display. That allowed it to open up in a more rectangular shape which was great for video watching as opposed to the more square shape we see on Samsung’s Z Fold and the current Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which would leave large top and bottom bezels during video playback.

I’d also say it’s almost certain we’ll get some form of multitasking with multiple apps just like we can do on the iPad mini. Mark Gurman also said in Sunday’s PowerOn that iOS 19 will bring all new ways of interacting with your devices. To me, that sounds like pre-planning for devices with new form factors.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple adopts something similar to Open Canvas on the OnePlus Open as seen here. Tell me that doesn’t look like a very Apple-y way to do multitasking on phone sized devices.

Which way does it fold? Will it be a square chunk or popsicle stick? If the former I would at least be interested.
Sounds like it will be similar to the first Pixel Fold with shorter front display that is much wider than normal, which will fold out in a landscape view with a more rectangular display. That’s much better for video watching since it’ll have much smaller top and bottom bezels compared to square shaped foldables. That rectangular shape would also be great for multitasking with multiple apps.

You aren't paying attention to the current foldables if you think it will be twice as thick.
Wow. The Oppo is impressive. If they can crack the code to screen durability and crease visibility it will be magnificent indeed!!

That clip looks cool, very useful. Guess we’ll see!

It seems that crease is much less visible, in particular when the phone is fully open, but I agree that durability is a much bigger issue. Seems like these phones get replaced every year or two. Bad for the consumer but great for the phone manufacturers.

I love my Pixel 9 Pro Fold and eagerly awaiting the iPhone fold... but in reality if cost were any object and I wasn't slightly insane (and this being my industry) I'd be insane to choose a fold over a iPhone 16 Pro + MacBook Air + iPad for about the same price... but again this product is meant more to be a luxury item for the user to "flex" in public (pun intended)

Maybe it will unfold into a Mac Studio - like the red nose Johnny Ives designed. Then it might be worth it. As long as it has an M6 ultra.
