I don't think it was ever an idea, it was a concept design Apple thought about doing for a phone.

Newton/iPhone

The idea of the Newton phone being applied to the iPhone isn't so far fetched. Imagine docking the iPhone into a display/keyboard setup...

The son of Hartmut Esslinger, a designer for Apple in the early 80s posted a collection of never before published images of Apple Designs from the early 80s including several Apple phone designs.

This design resembles Apple's Apple //c design.

Many of these (all? I'd have to take a look) were published in Paul Kunkel's excellent coffee-table book AppleDesign. Good luck finding a copy.

it makes me want apple to incorporate phone capabilities in all macs. just plug in a phone line (in addition to support for voip) and dial away

That looks surprisingly modern for an early 80's device, even if it's only a concept.
