Apple has announced that its first retail store in Queens, New York, located at the Queens Center shopping mall in the Elmhurst neighborhood, will have its grand opening on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 AM local time. The new Apple Store at 90-15 Queens Boulevard will be open between 10:00 AM and 9:30 PM on Monday-Saturday and between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM on Sunday.

Apple's first retail store in Queens will mark its eighth location in New York City, with six existing locations in Manhattan and one in Staten Island. Apple is also planning to open its first retail store in Brooklyn, having signed a long-term lease for a 20,000 square-foot building at 247 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, although those plans are running behind schedule after the store missed its original April 2015 grand opening target.

Apple recently opened its new Upper East Side store in Manhattan at 940 Madison Avenue, on the corner of 74th Street, on the site of a former banking complex built in 1921 that previously housed luxury retailer VBH. The company also plans to renovate its iconic Fifth Avenue store and temporarily relocate to the vacating FAO Schwarz toy store in the same General Motors Building plaza.

Ok, Mr. Cook. Enough is enough. That makes how many Apple stores in the 5 boroughs alone? And there is a single Apple store in your home state of Alabama? <sigh>

I actually knew that (my kids live there). I'm just venting, cause if you live where Tim Cook grew up, you have to drive 2 hours to NEW ORLEANS to get to the nearest Apple store. That's two states away.

You could go to the single Apple store in the state, but that's over 4 hours away.

Maybe Apple retail team did thorough analysis and decided Alabama is not ready yet? Retail is a complex business, they can't just open a store simply because a CEO grew up in that area, wouldn't be fair to shareholders.

I know. It just seems so wrong. I know his mother passed recently, so he probably won't be back to visit as often as before. I was always hoping that on one of his trips down here, his iPhone would break, and then he'd understand. <shrug>

Very happy to finally see this day! A lot of the locals here were surprised to not see an Apple Store when mall renovated around 10 years ago but its been a long time coming!

I will still probably drive into the 5th ave store at 2 AM for genius bar appts (best time to park in manhattan) ultimately but its nice to have one more choice! :)

If I still lived in Jamaica, this would have been a godsend. But now I live in LIC. Soon, Grand Central and 5th Ave. stores are the easiest for me to get to. But, it's nice that Queens is getting some love anyway! We beat Brooklyn! Woohoo!

Isn't that Slightly personal about his mother dying? I wouldn't want the whole world to know if mine died! Plus if his iPhone Breaks he probably has a spare being the boss of the richest person on the planet?

I visited this thread thinking that at least this was somewhat benign news, so probably wouldn't stir up the usual amount of complaining.

Proved wrong.

I would say since it's Tim Cook is not a historical figure at Apple as of yet there would be no reason to build an Apple store in a specific area just because he grew up there. Unless the area has high potential for sales.

You could come to Minnesota. We have 5 stores in the Twin Cities - 4 of them within 20 minutes of each other. :D

More hipsters / Apple fans in NYC per square mile than in all of Alabama. Regional sales figures influence where more stores open up at. NYC alone has over 8million people, Alabama 4-5million. :apple:

You do realize how long it takes to get to these stores living in NYC. Then to see how busy each one is. This was needed years ago. Nice to see these stores finally opening up locally.

Hahaha I knew someone would say this. That's only because Brooklyn is actually getting a new store (20,000 SQFT btw) and Queens just have a mall location ;)

Still need a store in Harrisburg, PA. Sick of New York getting everything, and sick of having to drive to Lancaster. Lol

That's better than driving to King of Prussia if you wanted to goto the Apple Store. I use to live in Lancaster County and was surprised when they opened a store in Park City Mall. I just thought it was an out of the way place for one.

I remember having to send people to KOP to get warranty work done on their iPhone. People were mad at having to drive that far. hehe

I actually find mall Apple Stores depressing. Sparse spaces full of people browsing for the sake of it being an Apple Store, not actually buying anything, and with a few hipsters in the back asking a "genius" about something inane like why their selfies look so bad. The flagship stores are impressive, but the mall stores are just vapid retail spaces.

Apple store or not, Hoboken is cooler than Queens and Brooklyn combined ;-)
