Build them all here in the USA in one giant factory.

The new iPad - 16 gb only $899
The iPhone 5 - 16 FB only $599 with two year contract
iMac starts at $2199
Etc...

There's NO WAY this could ever happen, that is unless US workers were paid under $1/ hour

sorry but incremental changes just aren't "exciting" anymore

we were used to LIFE changing products

not just crap thats slightly better ...

do you want to make iPad Mini's the rest of your life

or do you want to change the world...

So over the last say 14 years we have had maybe 4 totally innovative products from apple that have changed things, iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad. How many do you want? One a year by the sound of it, these things take imagination, time and a lot of effort to produce. Most companies would only come up with none or maybe one if they are lucky in that time. This comment epitomises the sense of entitlement which seams all invasive in modern society.

Unfortunately this isn't really realistic given that all the suppliers of electronics going into these devices are based in Korea, Japan, China etc. It has got to a point where bringing even simple electronic device manufacture back to the US would be so difficult its not really possible. That's not even considering more expensive labour which would probably not really increase overall prices that much as all the electronic sub-assemblies going into these devices are made using highly mechanised production processes with only final assembly being carried out by hand.

Labour costs are not going to push prices up all that much as much of the assembly is mechanised. Its already been calculated that labour rates in the US would only add about $20 to the price of an iPhone.

You want to be surprised, stop following rumor sites.

no...its a product of your decision to visit sites like this one. want surprises? dont go to leak/rumor sites. problem solved.

Like when? People complain about the lack of a "one more thing" announcement with the iPhone 5 (a la Siri on the iPhone 4S), but I recall even knowing about Siri before the announcement, all thanks to a little poking around on rumor mills like this one.

Stop visiting macrumors.

kidding, kidding

I've been reading the boards for a very long time, and my point is that it hasn't always been this way. We used to find out the odd bit here and the odd bit there, and the fun was in the speculation.

Then every keynote, you had to guess about what may come, there was little to no certainty.

Nowadays you could pretty much assemble an iPhone 5 from components before release, thats a whole new level of knowing what would be released. Moreover, not reading the boards wouldn't make much difference either as the main events hit mainstream news conduits anyhow.

If you had taken the time to digest my comment you would realise that it was aimed at the changes over time of macrumors and product leaks due to the growing size of apple, which I fully accept, not some uninformed rant about knowing too much.

So a reply along the lines of 'stop reading the boards' is entirely misinformed.

???

I don't have an Iphone or an Ipad, and my life hasn't changed.

In fact, I feel sorry for the people who focus their lives on their Itoys....

Maybe that's why lol. :D

Save your sympathies for someone who actually needs them, thanks. :)

Lol..

I just love these

"According to a handful of Apple employees who spoke to us on condition of anonymity,"

Maybie they don't know the meaning yet.... Saying "condition if anonymity" then telling everyone is hardy a secret anymore...

Oh well...

At least Microsoft has their secrecty down pat.

Apple never stood a chance, never will, regardless of how "secure" they reckon they are.

But then again...... I just love rumors......... (Even though i din't believe all of them.)

I think it's you who is confused about the meaning of "anonymity". It refers to the speaker, not to what is spoken.

Ok. So then why did he speak.

Well, you'd have to ask him why he spoke. Or her...

That doesn't change the fact that anonymity doesn't mean "keeping something secret"; it means "not being outed as the source of the leak".

People divulge secrets for lots of reasons. They're much more likely to do so if they aren't going to be caught!

For what it's worth: I don't think Apple cares about these leaks, and I think it's accepted that they have a role in them from time to time. I think they're pretty happy with all the publicity that results.

The fundamental error that most American's make in a blithe discussion of outsourced manufacturing and that our prized politicians pretend to make, is the misconception that 'Bringing Consumer Product Manufacturing' back to America is simply a matter of signing a few papers into law. Or humble statements like Apple, please bring your manufacturing back to the USA.
We voluntarily pushed mass production out of the country because our capitalist economy made it impossible for companies to profit egregiously in the face of higher standards of worker living, retirement benefits and unionization here.
You want to bring Manufacturing back to America? Here's what we need to do:
1) Depreciate the cost of living to about 1/2 what it is in 2012
2) Eliminate public stocks and Nationalize key industries
3) Become a socialist nation versus the Capitalist Oligarchy that we are.
I fabricate some in Asia myself and let me tell you, doing so in the US would be 10 times the cost!
So please, let's loose the stuff about repatriating our manufacturing. :D
What we do need to do is stop Asia from cloning our innovations.

If Apple and Tim really cared about our country and less about short term profits, they could bring back production here, at the same time virtually eliminate product development secrecy and counterfeits/IP copying, they could do it.
But it would call for major investment in robotics and design to change from the standard manual intensive product assembly line. All major electronic companies from HP to Apple should invest at the university level to develop the future of electronic manufacturing here in the USA.
The tax codes should be changed; the corporate tax rate on profits should be based upon the percentage of your product that is sourced and built in the USA. If your product is 100% sourced and built in the USA, then your tax rate is less than 5%. If your product is 100% sourced and built in other countries, your tax rate should be 70% and higher.

That's a really interesting article and somewhat similar to what BMW does on the motor industry side. BMW develops, owns and has total control over the tooling equipment that external suppliers use to make components.

This means:
- BMW has control over quality of production made with the tools,
- BMW can chose when to introduce model changes (i.e. tooling changes) without having to involve the supplier too much,
- BMW can develop prototypes before the tooling is shipped to the supplier, and
- there is less chance of early leakage of new designs.

BMWs get leaked all the time. Just check bimmerpost.com, leaks of new models and engines are rampant. This is the power of the internet, speed of information is unparalleled. People want to share the exciting information and create the discussions.

The ONLY way that Apple can prevent leaks is develop the product, have the keynote and then have the product produced by their partners. Simple as that, however this will lead to lengthy pre-orders and deliveries, which nowadays in a world where we want everything now now now seems impossible. Hell people complain they can't order new Apple products right after a keynote!

They really need to come out with their products as Apple did before... introduce say the new iMac, all its new features and changes, and then pull the "one more thing" and introduce, say the new iPhone, with just a handful of details, until its major keynote.

If china stops stealing then they have nothing! Then again, they have no innovations.

Give us a little time i think we can get the standard of living down to 1/3

Well, they are already doing it ... chips.

They aren't fabbing chips which is the part that requires the most money/expertise. Arranging standard arm design on a piece of silcon is relatively simple compared to performing the research and building the fab to be able to produce 32nm and 28nm chips.

Jesus bro, put the Kool-Aid down...

An Apple product, itself, is the "kool-aid." To put the "kool-aid" down would essentially mean to stop using Apple products. For some people, computers are just tools. For other people, its also the community built up around the product. Few brands achieve that. Apple is one of them.

The secrecy is also a part of what makes following Apple product, fun. If full release schedules and planned products lists were easily available, MacRumors (and similar sites) wouldn't even exist...or at least be as successful as they are.

Agreed. One thing I've always appreciated about Apple is their "here's our new product, order it tomorrow" delivery. I hate reading about an impressive new product only to find out it's not available until late next year....

I know I could restore SOME measure of that by staying off MacRumors sites, but at least in the case of Apple, we're usually only a few weeks/months away from launch when the juicy leaks come out. Still better than an official announcement 6+ months in advance. AND, as mentioned in this thread, there are usually surprises on the software front to compliment the unveiling.

Yes agreed. Great points

That's what they would love for us to believe. Poor Apple can just barely hang on by their fingernails. They made around $26,000,000,000.00 in 2011.

Why would one of the most profitable companies in the world need to have a 50% hike to be able to still make any money on their products if they were domestically produced? If they made only 10 billion last year and had some more of their plants here, that would be disastrous for the company, no doubt.

If we add up each workstation on the assembly line, how many hours of human labor does it actually take to manufacture an Iproduct? How long does it actually take to assemble an Iphone or an Ipod?

I like Apple products myself, but at some point you gotta wonder- when is outsourcing gonna hit YOUR family? I work in the film business and I'm watching our labor market slowly being squeezed to death by overseas competition. I'm sure the Tech market is getting hit even worse. The problem isn't that the company you work for isn't going to make any money doing the work here- the problem is they can make MORE money by outsourcing the work. Make more money or less? In business, that's a no-brainer decision. Until it takes your job, of course.

How does ANY company that makes stuff in America make money? Its obviously not possible, right?

Also I wonder, how many people willing to work as a assembly engineers at apple in US for minimum wages? and cutting one of the non necessary guy off (like retailer chef, dono his name ) can pay how many thousand labor hours? as you know this is not one persons decision, so many greeds in Board and stake holders. so they don't give a sh** about US middle class citizens (sadly not only in US you can see all over the world, specially in West)
